Design a Raincoat!
Safety Considerations
Introduction

 Move around the classroom in a safe

Woosh, patter, crack, boom! A storm is rolling in Year
& orderly manner – no running!
1’s and it’s caught you un-awares!
 Exercise scissor-safety.
You & teddy were on a teddy bears picnic and you
forgot to pack teddy a raincoat! Teddy’s fur can’t
 Handle staplers with care.
get wet… So how will you keep him dry?
 Keep your activity station clean & tidy.
Your challenge is to design a raincoat using materials
from the classroom!

Specifications

 You must model your raincoat on a teddy.

 You must create a raincoat that will keep the teddy dry when water is poured over it.

 You may only use the classroom materials provided to construct your raincoat.

Time & Roles What you will need…

 5 minutes to PLAN design (Group Equipment: Materials:

Members)  Scissors  Tissue paper
 Glue  Newspaper
 2 minutes to COLLECT resources  Tape  Baking paper
(Group Manager – blue wristband)  Permanent  Cardboard
marker  Cellophane
 10 minutes to CONSTRUCT raincoat  Bubble-wrap
design (Group Members)  Alfoil
 Material scraps
 5 minutes to PRESENT raincoat (Group
Speaker – yellow wristband)

Presentation & Evaluation

At the end of the lesson, you will present your raincoat design to the class.

The teacher will test how effective your raincoat is by pouring a cup of water of your
teddy…

 If your teddy stays dry –you raincoat design was effective!

 If your teddy gets wet – your raincoat design was ineffective and you will need to design it
differently next time…

Think: What materials would be a good choice for a raincoat? Why? What materials would be unsuitable
for a raincoat? Why? What do you predict will happen what water is poured on the teddy.
