HRMANAGEMENT

Before beginning to make decisions in HRManagement, you will need a plan. In HR planning, you
try to make the best use of the resources available to your department by analyzing your current
situation, setting goals, and developing a strategy for meeting those goals. You will then use your
plan as a guide in making quarterly decisions in the simulation.

Situation: Where are we?

Based on the information in the case, give a brief description of the current state of staffing, wage,
training and program in the firm.

The firm has no policy on promotions. No formal instruction is given on employee training. There is a
lack of diversity in the firm with fewer females and minorities. There is a turnover rate of 9.8% which is
comparatively high. There is a lack of a formal performance appraisal program, wage rates and
employee benefits are lower than local equivalents, there is a lack of a grievance procedure and poor
training. The firm has very meager benefits at 20% of payroll. The firm also doesn’t have any formal
training programs. The accident rate is the same as the industry average at 494 but these numbers are
very high.

Goals: Where are we going?

Pick three to five goals for you to achieve in the next 4-6 quarters. Be sure your goals are measurable
within the context of the simulation.

1. Increase morale by 20 points

2. Increase productivity by 15 points
3. Decrease turnover to less than 5%
4. Decrease absenteeism by 120 days
5. Increase quality by 10 points

Strategy: How will we get there?

Outline the steps you will take in order to reach the goals you have set. Your outline should be detailed enough
to help you make your decisions, but flexible enough to allow you to respond to changing conditions. Also consider
the resources you will need to implement your plan.

I will increase morale by increasing benefits in the 1st and 2nd quarters. I will follow up by increasing
wages in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. To increase productivity and decrease turnover, I will implement
training for all 4 quarters to train staff that have been promoted and for new hires. I will spend more
on training for new hires and promotions as well as training for managers and supervisors. To increase
quality, I will get a full time Quality Control Manager for quality management. I will slowly implement
more employee programs to decrease absenteeism, increase morale, and decrease turnover. To
increase morale and decrease turnover, I will implement the employee participation program and
grievance procedure for all quarters. To decrease turnover, I will introduce the orientation program to
the firm for all quarters as well. I will also implement a performance appraisal system in the 1st quarter
to increase morale and productivity. To make better decisions, I will start the HRIS when there is
money to spare in the budget. I will make sure that the number of staff needed is always present and I
will stick to promoting my staff rather than hiring new people.
