I am an English teacher

I sent my first application letter to LPIA, an English course institution,

when LPIA’s HRD offering a part time job as an English teacher. I had been

waiting for about three months when they called me up. Then, I took my TOEFL

just a few days before lebaran day. They asked me to come in a week after lebaran

to present my micro teaching. I was free to choose what material I would present

in my micro teaching according to the superintended of HRD.

It was so exciting when I had to perform my first micro teaching in front

of students directly. Although micro teaching looked like an ordinary presentation

I have done for many years in front of my friends, I felt that those two kinds of

presentation were really different. I could not be as confident as when I conveyed

my presentation among my friends. My confidence has gone since the first second

I stood in front of the students. My tongue froze. My body trembled. My mind

was blank. I did not know what to say.

A week after lebaran day, I could not present material I have prepared

before because I was thirty minutes late. The superintended of HRD then told me

to teach them past tense. It made me more nervous. In my mind, I was considering

how I could present material I have never prepared before when I forgot all my

own materials. After a few seconds, I could call my mind in. I tried to

communicate with the students by asking some questions concerned with

materials they have learned before while I was thinking how to convey past tense

material well.

I was helping them translate their holiday story from Indonesian into

English when I found an idea to read a fable. I thought that fable was relevant to

teach past tense. Then, I asked the students to read the fable first before I read it

for them. The fable’s title was The Hare and The Tortoise. It was about an

arrogant hare which got a challenge from a tortoise to make a run race. The

winner was the tortoise.

After we finished read the fable, I asked them some questions about it. I

found that they were still confused about the fable. They had known the beginning

and the ending of the fable already, but they did not know what happened between

the beginning and the ending yet. In other to make them understand the story well,

I tried to retell the story in Indonesian with my own gesture and words. I retold

the story again and again until they seemed understand. After they could answer

all my questions about the story well, I continued to the next step where I

supposed to ask them to rearrange the jumbled pictures. Those jumbled pictures

were must be as well organized as the fable goes.

I used English too much when I was giving explanation and instruction to

the students. It made them got difficult to understand what I said. So, a teacher in

LPIA suggested me to use both Indonesian and English in the classroom.

All of the sequence above really changed my whole life. I used to be just

an ordinary college who only need to study. But, after I was officially became one

of the part time English teacher, I should do two different things, studying and

teaching. I realize that studying is easier than teaching. When I am studying, I

know how far I understand and master the material. But when I am teaching, it is

difficult to know whether they understand my explanation or not.

Becoming an English teacher is another responsibility I take in my life. So,

I will try as hard as possible to make my students understand my explanation.
