Class: High School Math Grade 12

One Student with Down Syndrome

Co-teaching: One Teach, One Support

Unit: Use special triangles to determine geometrically the values of sine, cosine, tangent for π/3,

π/4 and π/6, and use the unit circle to express the values of sine, cosine, and tangent for x, π + x,

and 2π - x in terms of their values for x, where x is any real number.

Teacher: Gabriella O’Loughlin

Objectives: Students will be able to use a right triangle to find the values for sin, cos, and tan.

Students will also be able to use a unit circle to verify the answer they got from the right triangle.

Students will feel a sense of accomplishment after learning how to use right triangle and unit

circle to determine the values of sin, cos, and tan.

Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.TF.A.3

Do Now: At the beginning of the class we will start with a Do Now, and everyone will get into

groups of four and work on the problem given what they learned in the last class. Once everyone

is done the group will write their answer on the board and the groups that get it right will get an

extra five points on the next test.

Co-teacher will work with the student with Down Syndrome to make sure they are on target and

can work with the group.

Anticipatory set:

1. I hand out a KWL worksheet, so the students can fill out before we begin the lesson.

2. To focus the students, I’m going to start off teaching the lesson with a real-world

problem, so they can relate the material to the real world.

3. Also show a video of the problem, so they can get a visual before I start to teach the

details.

4. Then teach the lesson with writing on the board the notes and definitions, and also show

how problems can be solved using a graphing calculator.

5. Then go over examples on how to use the right triangle and the unit circle.

Teaching Input: Go through the lesson slowly with also showing videos for the students who

learn better watching a video instead of listening to the teacher lecture.

Teaching Modeling: Show students how to accomplish a problem, using different methods.

Students can then pick the method that works for them as long as they come up with the correct

answer.

Teaching Checking for Understanding: Once the lesson is taught I will give everyone a problem

to do alone. The support teacher will walk around seeing if students need any help and see if

students are getting the concept or not. If a lot of students didn’t understand we will find out the
area that students are getting lost, and reteach. Also with the student with Down Syndrome the

support teacher will help the student more while I am teaching the class.

Questioning guidelines: I will ask questions to see if students can respond, if a lot of students are

responding I can determine if they are understanding the lesson or not, but if I get no feedback I

have to keep teaching the lesson more. Then see how many students can answer the questions

they are given. I will go up to the student with Down Syndrome and work with them one on one

to make sure they completely understand and that they are focused on the lesson.

Guided Practice: After I teach it’s time to watch the students try more problems after we went

over the lesson more. The support teacher and I will walk around to see if students are

comprehending the lesson and do the problem.

Directions: After the problem is completed by all the students and most understand the lesson, I

will ask if the students if they have any final questions. Support teacher will work with the

student if they have more in-depth question about the lesson.

Closure: At the end of the class I will recap what we have learned, go over and last questions.

Help organize student’s thoughts about the lesson, reinforce the major points about the right

triangles and the unit circle.

Independent Practice: One problem is assigned at the end of the class and then they bring that

question back to class the next day and see how many students got it right, and what they
understood about the lesson. Also, homework is assigned but it’s not checked, students can do it

for extra help if they need it.
