Diversity Lesson Plan

Book: Bee Bim Bop, Linda Sue Park, 2008

Grade Level: Elementary grade 1st or 2nd

Multicultural Theme: Family and food in a traditional Korean culture

Materials: The book Bee Bim Bop by Linda Sue Park, strips of construction paper, pencils, crayons,
colored markers.

Standard: CCSS.ELA- Literacy. R L. 1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using
key details. (Describe the different cultures of food)

Objective: Students will be able to learn about a traditional Korean dish and draw their own version of the
dish “Bee Bim Bop.”

Procedure

Introduce: Show the book Bee bit Bop by Linda Sue Park and say, “Today we are going read about
a traditional dish in a Korean culture. What are some traditional foods that you and your family eat?

Read: Teacher reads the book aloud

Discuss: Students will discuss the comments of the story and apply it with what they know about
their own culture’s food.
· Question 1: What kind of foods do you and your family like to
eat?
· Question 2: What are your favorite foods from another culture or
country?
· Question 3: What are some other traditional dishes that you like
to try.
· Question 4: How do you help out your family prepare for
dinner?
· Question 5: If you can only eat one dish for the rest of your life,
what would it be?
Activities:
· Working in small groups, to draw Bee Bim Bop and then draw
their favorite dish. Bonus pints for adding sound effects like in the book.

· Then discuss with their groups what they drew and what their
traditional dish was.

· We will then discuss together as a class and allow groups to


volunteer all of the different foods that they learned.

· Evaluation: Teacher checks students' work during the


discussion at the end.
