Answer all questions in the spaces provided.

1. Water and steam reacts with a list of metals in the following way.

Experiment A Metal Reactions

Zinc Silvery metal became Gas X produced a
yellow when hot and ‘pop’ sound with a
white when cold lighted splinter

Copper Brownish red metal Gas collected did not

remained unchanged produce a ‘pop’ sound
with a lighted splinter.

A steady stream of steam is passed over heated metal powder, zinc. The zinc
glows and the resulting powder after the reaction is yellow when hot and white
when cold. The gas, X collected extinguishes a lighted splint with a ‘pop’
sound.

The experiment is repeated using copper and the result is shown in the
above table.

(a) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction of zinc and
steam.

(b) For the reaction in (a),

(i) name the oxidising agent. _________________________________ [1]

(ii) name the substance that has been reduced? _________________ [1]

(c) Explain your answer to (b)(ii).

(d) If 13.0 g of zinc powder is used and has completely reacted in excess
steam, what is the mass of the resulting powder produced ?

2(a) When sulfuric acid is dissolved in water, name the ion produced that
gives the solution the acidic property.

(b) Complete the table below to show what happens when electrolysis is
carried out on dilute aqueous sulfuric acid using carbon electrodes.

(c) Write balanced chemical equations for the reactions at the anode and
cathode.

4. MA 2 is a solution containing both potassium hydroxide and sodium
hydroxide. The concentration of sodium hydroxide is 2.40 g/dm3 but the
concentration of potassium hydroxide is unknown.

A student was asked to determine the concentration of the potassium

hydroxide in the solution by titrating it with 20.0 cm3 of MA1, a dilute
acid solution containing 7.30 g/dm3 of hydrogen chloride.

His results are as follows:

Titration number 1 2
Final burette reading/ cm3 24.0 23.0
Initial burette reading/ cm3 4.5 3.5
Volume of MA 2 used/ cm3

(a) Complete the table to show the volume of MA 2 used in both titration.

(b) Calculate the number of moles of hydrogen chloride in 1 dm3 of MA 1.

(c) Calculate the total number of moles of hydroxide ions in 1 dm3 of MA 2.

____________________________________________________________ [1]

(d) Calculate the number of moles of NaOH in 1 dm3 of MA 2.[1]

____________________________________________________________ [1]

(e) Calculate the number of moles of hydroxide ions due to the potassium
hydroxide in 1 dm3 of MA 2.
