The students worked on comparing and ordering numbers using a numberline. Lesson
1.3 of Go Math. The

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:


4NBT. A.3 Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
3. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any
place.
Math Practice standards:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
7. Look for and make use of structure.

Lesson Objectives:

● I can round whole numbers to any place


● I can estimate numbers to the nearest place value
● When given a number with an underlined digit, students will be able to round or
estimate to the place value given.

Materials Needed:

Go Math Workbook, Pencils, White board

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:


This lesson is in the afternoon. Students are starting to loose their stamia. I may need to
take a stretch break to get student back on track. With the lack of focus there maybe
more unfocused talking during partner time.
A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)
● getting attention
● relating to past experience and/or knowledge
● creating a need to know
● sharing objective, in general terms

Who can tell me what estimating is? When could we use estimation?
Yesterday you working on comparing and round numbers. Today we are going to
work on two ways to round numbers to the place value identified. When given any
number you want to be able to round to any place value.
2. Content Delivery
Part 1. 20 minutes
● How can we round numbers?
○ Example number- Work through it.
○ Use number line
■ Talk about half way point
○ Use ____<_____<______
■ look at the number to the right-
● Is it s bossy number or a weak number
● Can is give a raise?
Part 2 (20 minutes)
● Students will work on problems in partners and indepently
○ Half the students will work with partners
○ Half the students will work independently with guidance from
teachers/para
○ Students will switch. (10 minute interval)

3. Closure (5 minutes)

C. Differentiated Instruction
5 Students with IEPs will folow along with instruction with whole group and then have a
small group with specialized instruction. Higher level students will be encouraged to
work on the “Go Deeper” questions, once they have finished the assignment.
