Scene 1 – The Christening of Princess Aurora

(Short drama scene of birth/handing over the baby - Fairy Rosebud enters. The King
and Queen are UC looking down on and adoring baby Princess Aurora. She reads
from a giant story-book with ‘Fairy Tales’ on the front)
Rosebud: Well, goodness me! What do I see? A lot of girls and boys!
I ‘spose I should have guessed as much when I heard all that noise.
How kind of you to come along and be with us today,
I promise you all, a ‘Fairy-tale’ before you go away.
Like all Good Fairies, as you will see, I'm very good at ‘spelling’!
There's only one thing I like more - and that, is story-telling...
For you see, it's so useful, when you have to speak in rhyme,
To know that you can always start with... Once upon a time…
(Reading from the story-book)
Many, many moons ago in a Kingdom far away
A King and Queen presided on a very special day.
Today a little child is born, she’s pretty, cute and pure
Her virtues all will blossom as she goes on to mature.
It’s my job to protect her and her safety I shall keep!
But keep your voices to a hush – she’s currently asleep.

Now boys and girls be wary, for there’s evil in our midst,
A Wicked Witch who wants our tale to take a rotten twist.
Carabosse is her name and she really is bad tempered
She stomps around causing despair and always acts self-centred.
She can’t be trusted to be nice so I’ve kept her at bay.
I thought it best if she were not invited here today.
2

I’ll bestow three gifts upon the child, for it’s my fairy duty
The first gift I bring upon the girl is the wondrous gift of beauty.
The second gift, to the joyous babe I bring,
A treat to last a lifetime, the ability to sing.
Lastly, the third gift I shall give to you, (Enter
Carabosse)
Oh no! It’s Wicked Carabosse – boys and girls, BOOO!

Carabosse: Oh, shut up you ‘horrible lot!

You thought you’d have a party without telling yours truly?
Well how should one react to being treated quite so cruelly?

Rosebud: Carabosse, be gone, for you’re not welcome at this party!

Carabosse: Oh, shut up, you big fairy, stop acting like a smarty!
Not inviting me? Well I could think of nothing worse
And so upon your baby, I shall place a little curse…

‘I wish her skill with fingers nimble

With needle, thread and silver thimble
But on the day when she turns sixteen
I’ll be avenged of King and Queen…
She’ll prick her finger whilst spinning thread
My curse on you! She’ll drop down dead!’

So now you’ll regret the betrayal you fools dealt to me

For she will die, and this I say, is Carabosse’s decree! (Evil laugh and exit)

Queen: Oh dear! What are we to do? We cannot lose our precious child!

Rosebud: Now don’t despair, Your Majesties, listen to what I say

I still have one more gift to give – I will save the day!

Queen: Oh thank you, Your Fairyness – I thought things might get worse!
King: I plead you, Fairy Rosebud, please undo the curse!

Rosebud: Carabosse’s magic is fear greater than mine…

But I can help – oh yes I can!
I’ll try to make things fine.

‘If through this Wicked Witches trick,

A spindle, should your finger prick
The gift I bring shall change the curse,
And make the result far less worse
You’ll fall into a deep, deep sleep,
And safe and sound, in that you’ll keep’.

Queen: We can’t have that!

King: Why, she couldn’t possibly sleep forever!

3

Rosebud: If Aurora slept forever, I shall be remiss

And so she’ll wake, when she is blessed, unto a true loves kiss!

Queen: Why thank you, Fairy Rosebud! How could we ever repay you?

King: We’ll do everything we can,

For I would not do anything to risk our precious daughter!
All spinning wheels be gathered now, for this I do proclaim
Once piled on one another, I shall set them all aflame.

DRAMA: (to audience) And so it seems, our scene is set, our show can carry on
We’ll whiz through time, say sixteen years, and there we’ll set upon.
Another birthday for the Princess, let’s all have some fun
So, boys and girls, we’ll whisk away – come and join us everyone!

MUSICAL THEATRE NUMBER – CELEBRATION THEME

Scene 2 – Princess Aurora’s 16th Birthday

Nora: (To audience) Oh, hello everyone! I said hello everyone! That’s better. Well,
my name is Nora & this is Nanny. Nanny and Nora. And we are the nurse
maids for the beautiful Princess Aurora here at the castle. Everyone’s busy as
we’re getting ready for her sixteenth birthday party! Oh, it seems like
literally five minutes until she was born – oh how times flies! Anyway, I’m
feeling a bit tired as I’ve been to the gym today, there’s a new machine there
and I love it! I’ve used it three times today, I got two KitKats and a bag of
crisps and a lucozade.

Nanny:
I think she’s comfort eating. She’s been a bit down in the dumps lately. Her
husband left her… (awwwww)… yeah he left her because she was ‘too
clingy’

Nora:
So, I said “Ok, I'll come with you.”

Nanny:
She’s been married 16 times now you know… 4 richer, 4 poorer, 4 better, 4
worse!
Anyway, boys and girls, We had better get back to the kitchen and prepare
the food for the party! I’ve got a bun in the oven! (Exit Nora)

(Enter King and Queen) - Scene - Boys and girls playing outside, princess watching
on. At the end of the scene they exit to go and play by the river.

Aurora: Hello boys and girls! My name is Princess Aurora and tomorrow is the day
of my sixteenth birthday party. I’m not feeling completely happy though. For
sixteen years, I’ve never been allowed outside the palace grounds… no-one
will ever tell me why! The people out there in the village are so lucky. None
4

of them seem to have a care in the world. It’s all so different here in the
palace. Everyone’s always telling me what to do and how to behave! Just
once, just once I wish I knew what it was like to be poor.

(Enter Fairy)

Fairy: So the Princess wishes to be poor,

At last the moment I’ve been waiting for!
I’ll summon a Prince from a nearby land,
Her true love who will win her hand.
But for the spell to have success,
He must not know that she is a Princess.
A simple village girl she’ll pretend to be,
But will it work? Let’s wait and see…

(Enter Prince) Village scene with everyone – improve fruit sellers etc

Prince: Excuse me miss – do you live here?

Aurora: Yes, I live here in the village. I’m just a poor village girl. Who are you? You
look very grand. Are you an Earl?
Prince: No. Why?
Aurora: I often see a lot of Dukes and Earle’s passing by the palace.
Prince: So, tell me, what is your name?
Aurora: My name is Aurora.
Prince: That’s a beautiful name.
Aurora: Thank you. And whats your name?
Prince: I am Prince Florizel Charming of near Billinge Lump (he bows)
Aurora: (Curtseying) I am very pleased to meet you, Your Highness – but what are
you doing here?
Prince: Last night I had a dream… a fascinating dream. In my dream, there was a
Fairy who told me that I should travel over the Billinge Lump to the nearby
Kingdom of Garswood and that a Princess was in trouble and needed my
help!
Aurora: (Enthralled) and you came all this way to help me? I mean her!
Prince: I’ve almost given up hope of finding a nice Princess…
Aurora: Well maybe this time you’ll find a nice Princess!
Prince: Maybe I will – but if I do, I’ll never forget the beautiful girl I met in the
village of Wythenshaw.
Aurora: Why – Your Highness!
Prince: Tell me Aurora, do you believe in love at first sight? I didn’t, until today…
Aurora: But you’re a Prince!
Prince: Exactly! But a Prince must marry a Princess! If only you were a Princess,
how happy we’d be!
Aurora: You know, just now I was wondering what was so great about being a
Princess, now I think I know!

MUSICAL THEATRE ENTER FOR SONG,

Prince and Aurora sit on front of stage through song then exit.
(They sing then exit together arm in arm. The King and Queen enter)King and
Queen2 pacing/worried.
5

King: My dear Queen, today is the day! Sixteen years have gone by since that
Wicked Witch Carabosse placed that awful curse on our precious daughter
Princess Aurora.
Queen: Which, of course means that all the spinning wheels in the land must be
banished and kept out of reach from her. After all, today is a big birthday
celebration!
King: But how on earth could we build the palace walls high enough to protect her?
Queen: That’s easy – one brick at a time!

(Song . After song, they exit and Carabosse enters)

MUSICAL THEATRE TO SING AS KING AND QUEEN EXIT

Carabosse: Have you forgotten that I’m still here?

You can boo all you want, hiss me, jeer…
Shout yourselves hoarse, I don’t give a toss,
For I am the immortal Carabosse.
Though it may seem my plans have gone awry
Sixteen years I’ve waited for Aurora to die.
All I’ve been doing is biding my time,
Now the time has come to commit my crime.
I said she’d prick her finger on a pin (she produces a pin-shaped dagger)
Well, guess who’s going to stick it in!
I’m the wickedest Fairy there ever has been,
Let me tell you, it’s wonderful being mean! Ha! Ha! Ha! (Exit)

(Enter Aurora holding an envelope)

Aurora: Hello boys and girls! How wonderful how I’ve met someone as charming
Prince Florizel! However, he had to attend to his royal duties and slay the big
bad dragon in Downall Green! But he told me he will return and we can live
happily ever after, once my party has finished. Anyway, I can open my
presents at last! Oh look, this card has arrived already! I wonder who it’s
from? What can it be?

(She opens the envelope, takes out a picture of a spinning wheel and shows the
audience. She reads out loud…)

‘Happy Birthday! I’ve arranged a treasure trail,

Do you want to find your present? You can’t fail.
But, you have to climb up ever so high,
To the tower that’s closest, to the sky!
That’s easy, I know where the topmost tower is!

‘Go there, and you’ll get a gift from none other,

Than your own Fairy Godmother!’
6

A present from my own Fairy Godmother! I’ll see you later, boys and girls, I
have to go to the topmost tower! (She exits)

(King, Queen and Nora enter singing ‘Happy Birthday’ from off-stage) Everyone to
come on and sing happy birthday, shout surprise at the end… begin to realise she isn’t
there.

King: Happy Birthday my darling

Queen: Happy Birthday my dearest
Nora: Happy Birthday, Nanny’s little love
King: She’s not here
Nanny: He’s quick isn’t he!
Queen: Where is our daughter?
Nora: (To audience) Have you seen Princess Aurora? Where is she? The topmost
Tower?
Queen: Do you know where the Topmost Tower is, Nanny? Nora?
Nanny: Oh yes – I know this place like the back of my hand!
King: Where is it then?
Nanny: It’s just past that mole… up the middle finger… turn left at my thumb, then
straight on!
Queen: We must find Aurora soon!
Queen: Enough of this! We must find her quickly.
(They exit and Carabosse enters disguised as an old woman)

Scene 3 – The Topmost Tower

Carabosse: Spin the flax, wind the thread,

Princess Aurora will soon be…
(Enter Aurora)
Aurora: Hello! What are you doing?
Carabosse: Hello my dear. I’m spinning
Aurora: Spinning, what’s that?
Carabosse: Have you never seen a spinning wheel before?
Aurora: No, never! How does it work?
Carabosse: Come closer and I’ll show you

Aurora: (To audience) Don’t think boys and girls, this sweet old lady won’t hurt me!
Carabosse: Of course not, my pretty. Now this is a flax, wound around the distaff
Aurora: I see…
Carabosse: Then when I press this treadle, the wheel spins and the thread is collected…
on that spindle.
Aurora: This is called a spindle?
Carabosse: Indeed, it is… (she jumps up and cackles, making Aurora prick her finger)
Aurora: Goodness, you frightened me! You made me prick my… fin… (she slumps
to the ground)

Carabosse: Ha! Ha! Ha!

7

Behold! The evil deed’s been done!

So you can shut up, everyone!
I’m sorry, but your little friend,
Has met the most untimely end.
Do I see hankies? Ahhh, are you crying?
But it’s such fun to see Aurora dying! Ha! Ha! Ha! (Exit Carabosse)

(Enter Nanna, King and Queen)

Nora: Here we are, Squire, the topmost tower! All those stairs play havoc with my
veins.
Queen: (Seeing Aurora on the floor) My little Beauty!
King: And a spinning wheel! How could this have happened?
Nanna: Maybe Fairy Rosebud could help us?
Queen: She promised us that Aurora wouldn’t die… she’d just sleep for a hundred
years.
King: Who could have done this?
Nora: I don’t know? (To audience) Who was it boys and girls? Who? I thought
so… Carabosse!
Queen: The curse of the black fairy has come true! For sixteen years, we’ve
protected her until this fateful day! (She weeps)
Nanna: Oh, don’t start crying, you’ll have us all at it! (She weeps too)
King: What will become of us when she does wake up? If only all of us could sleep
for a hundred years!
(Flash and enter Fairy Rosebud)

Nora: Oh, I wish you wouldn’t do that! I jumped out my skin!

Fairy: Because you love this child so well,

I’ll grant a wish and make a spell.

Nanna: Fantastic, give us the lottery numbers!

Fairy: You’ll sleep for a century, but remember this…

She can only be woken by a true loves kiss.

Nora: Will he kiss me too?

King: I hope not for his sake!

Fairy: For a hundred years, this court will slumber…

Queen: So, we’ll all be here when Aurora wakes up?

Fairy: Yes! I touch you all with the dust of sleep,

… As your faithful watch you start to keep.
(They all slowly start to fall and go to sleep)

SONG – MUSICAL THEATRE

(END of song, following lines to be shared out amongst MT)
8

I beg you all, please calm your fears,

They’ll only sleep for a hundred years.
You people need to take a break,
You’ll be asleep, yet feel awake.
Eat an ice cream or buy a drink,
As the years pass faster than you think.
When you return, we’ll show you, friends,
Exactly how the story ends!

End of Act One

9

Act Two

Scene 1 – A Hundred Years Later

(Enter Fairy Rosebud)

Fairy: Hello boys and girls! How lovely it is to see you all again.
My dear friends, since I saw you last,
A hundred years have quickly past.
And in the Palace, all have slept, while I alone a vigil kept.
Aurora lies in a dream-like state,
While outside Prince Charming waits his fate.
For he can only break the spell,
And guarantee things turn out well.
It’s time to end our sweet recline,
Our dreamers all must rise and shine!

(Waves her wand and exits)

(Enter King, Queen and Nanna)

King: Hello Nanna, how did you sleep?

Nanna: I slept like a baby. I cried all night and wet the bed!
Queen: Can you believe we’ve been asleep for a hundred years?
Nora: No! You’ll be in for a shock when you go home and find your house was
knocked down fifty years ago!
King: I had some very strange dreams… Firstly, I dreamt I was in a car, and one
person was pushing me downhill and the other was steering.
Queen: What happened?
King: I woke up with a start. And then I dreamt I was Tom Jones!
Nanna: Does that happen often?
King: It’s not unusual. Anyway, I expect lots of things have changed since we’ve
been a-kip!
Nora: Except everyone’s clothes! Look, they’re all wearing the same things they
had one a hundred years ago! (To audience member) If you keep that outfit
long enough, love, it might come back into fashion!
Queen: So, what time are we in now?
Nanna: Nineteen twenty-three
King: Blimey- that’s nearly half-past seven!
Queen: I’ve just had a thought, did nobody remember to cancel the milk? I thought
not! The milkman’s left forty thousand pints of milk on our doorstep!
Nanna: How dare’e … (To audience) How Dairy!
King: Stop milking it! Pull the udder one!
Queen: More importantly, how is our little girl?
10

(Enter Fairy)

Fairy: Still safe, but still sleeping, Your Majesty. And now everyone’s awake, I
must go and fetch our heroic Prince, so he can awake Aurora with true love’s
kiss! It’s all in hand – do not worry! I know exactly where we can find our
Prince, I need you to wait at The Palace until I get back!

Nora: Right then, I’m going back to bed!

King & Nanny: Good idea!
Queen: Not so fast, you two! This whole Palace is filthy and has gone to rack and
ruin while we’ve been snoozing! There’s a hundred years’ worth of
decorating to catch up on – come on!

King/Nanna: OH NO! (All three exit)

Fairy: I too must leave to find our Prince, and get this project started,
Before the evil Carabosse finds out she’s been outsmarted.
One hundred years of waiting and now the time to act has come,
A true loves kiss is needed, so the curse is overcome.

Wish me luck! Bye, bye boys and girls! (She waves her wand and exits)

Scene Two – Decorating in The Palace

(Enter King, Queen and Nanna. The King and Nanna are dressed in overalls and are
wearing bowler hats)
Queen: Look at the state of this place! It hasn’t been decorated for a hundred years!
King: I’m sorry Queenie, but I shouldn’t be dressed like this – I’m the King!
Queen: Oh, sorry love! (Replaces his bowler hat with another that has a crown on it)
There you go. Right, there’s your wallpaper, there’s your paste, and there’s
your wall. There’s everything you need. And remember – don’t make a
mess! Right?
King/Nanna: Right.
Queen: Byesie, byesie!
King/Nanna: Byesie, byesie!
(Exit Queen)

(Decorating Scene in the style of Bruce Forsyth and Norman Wisdom)

MUSICAL THEATRE – DECORATING THEME/PHYSICAL

Scene Three – Outside the Fortress

(Enter Prince)
Prince: Hello boys and girls! Do you remember me? I am Prince Florizel Charming
and I have been sent on a quest to rescue Princess Beauty! One hundred
years have passed since the spell was cast upon the castle… However, the
Princess I am here to rescue is not my true love. My real true love is the poor
girl I met here in the village, but that was a long time ago and I cannot
remember her name! Can you help me boys and girls? What is her name?
11

Aurora? Did you say Princess Aurora? So, you’re telling me Aurora is the
Sleeping Beauty Princess who I am here to rescue?! Well, that’s a shocker!
But alas, I am here to save the day! Let’s go and wake her up unto a true
loves kiss! (He exits)

(Enter Carabosse)

Carabosse: I’m back here again… Hip, Hip, Hooray!

Let’s hear it for the Wicked Fairy.
A hundred years and I still hold sway,
Why don’t you LOSERS just go away!
I’ve watched the latest Prince’s arrival,
But I don’t rate his chance, and that means survival.
Prince Florizel will wish he had never been born,
For inside my forest of nettles and thorn,
Lurk evil creatures of evil invention,
And I assure you that’s my intention.
That the Prince will never kiss Beauty’s lips,
I’m sorry, but the Prince has had his chips! Ha! Ha! Ha! (Exit)

(Enter Queen)

Queen: My dear Aurora is in grave danger, and there is only one person who can
save her! Who is it boys and girls?
(Prince enters and audience call out ‘He’s Behind You’)
Who is it? He’s behind me? (Sees Prince) Who are you?

Prince: Your Majesty, I am Prince Florizel Charming and I am here to rescue your
daughter, Princess Aurora.
Queen: Splendid! Then you’ll need courage, determination, and oh, this… (stage-
hand gives her a sword from off stage)
Prince: Thanks, stage-hand! But why do I need a sword to kiss your daughter?
Queen: The Wicked Witch Carabosse is on the prowl, and she will do all she can to
stop you from rescuing her! Do not worry, the sword is magic, and will be
your guide.
Prince: Right – I am ready to face whatever dangers fate may send my way. Ready to
overcome obstacles, vanquish all foes and charge headlong into peril to
rescue my beloved. Aurora – here I come! (He runs off and runs back on)
Sorry, I forgot to ask, which way is the Palace?
Queen: Left!
Prince: Right!
Queen: No, left!
Prince: Oh, right!
Queen: No, you fork off to the left.
Prince: Right-o
Queen: Then you go down a country lane
Prince: Right-o
Queen: Then you venture through the black forest
Prince: Right-o
Queen: Why do you keep saying ‘Right-o’?
12

Prince: Because your standing on my right toe!

(MUSICAL THEATRE ENTER & react)

Aurora: (Yawning) Ohhh, what time is it? Oh! Who are you?
Prince: I am Prince Florizel Charming of Billinge Lump, your Highness.
Aurora: I’m sure I have seen you before… in my dreams… How long have I been
asleep?
Prince: One hundred years.
Aurora: A hundred years? What are you talking about?

(Enter King, Queen and Nanna)

Queen: Aurora, my dear! You have come back to us!

Aurora: Mother, Father, Nanna! (They embrace) We’ve all been asleep for a hundred
years, and thanks to Prince Florizel, we’re all safe again.

(Everyone cheers. Drama on and sit on the front or edge of stage.

Musical Theatre number – everyone to freeze whilst they perform. At end
of song everyone stays on stage to see the proposal and react accordingly.)

Prince: Sire, I’d like to ask permission to take Aurora’s hand in marriage.
MT: Blimey, that’s quick! One kiss and ‘let’s get hitched’!
Aurora: I say yes – as soon as possible!
MT: Then let the word be spread!!!
Announce the engagement of Princess Aurora of Wythenshaw Village and
Prince Florizel of Billinge Lump!
Nanna: I can’t wait… but look at all these cobwebs in the Palace. I’ll have to do a bit
of ‘Hoffman’
Queen: A bit of Hoffman?
Nanna: Dustin… ‘Dustin Hoffman’!

(Carabosse enters)

Carabosse: Silence all of you, you nasty creatures,

And gaze upon my wicked features!
I am Carabosse as you have guessed,
And as a villain, I am the best.
My final vengeance, I shall take,
This so-called party will become a wake.
Prince Charming, you’re now at war,
I’ll leave you dead upon the floor! Ha Ha! Ha!
A wicked plan, see if I don’t –
OH YES I WILL!
Everyone: Oh no you won’t!

(Flash and enter Fairy Rosebud)

Fairy: I’m terribly sorry that I am late,

Fairy Parliament had a debate.
13

Your wicked ways have brought us great shame,

That we take back your fairy name!

Carabosse: You can’t do that – I’m a fairy as well!

Fairy: No longer – as soon as I cast this spell.

Carabosse: I won’t listen – I don’t care what you say

Fairy: All your magic powers will wither away

And with them your good looks will depart,
As your face shows evil within your heart.
Be-gone – you’ll never more trouble the human race!

(Carabosse exits to boos and hisses)

MT: The Good conquered bad,

MT: Our tale ends here.
MT: Don’t you think they deserve a cheer? (cheer)
DRAMA: Wedding bells rang for the Prince and Princess
DRAMA: And they lived in true happiness.
DRAMA: And so after much joy and laugher, everybody lived…
Everyone: HAPPYILY EVER AFTER!

Finale song and curtain call.
