From the very beginning up to now, its aim to honor the
ROTARY CLUB OF METRO SURIGAO
The beginning of the Rotary Club of Metro Surigao can
be traced to a series of planning sessions and meetings
which started December 1984, facilitated by the Rotary
Club of Surigao City led by their President Boy Mendoza
and Special Governor's Representative Boy Yuipco. The
first meeting of the provisional dub was held on January
21, 1985 attended by 24 prospective members who
became its charter members when the club was finally
admitted to the Rotary International on July 2, 1985.
The club of today meets every Friday 7:00 PM at the
Hotel Tavern, Surigao City. Its territory is shared by the
Rotary Club of Surigao City and covers the mainland
municipalities and the islands of Surigao and Bucas
Grande all of Surigao del Norte and Surigao City.
To date, the club's membership has increased to 41
active members, 6 honorary members with 1 Multiple
Donor, 2 Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, 5 Paul Harris
Fellows, 9 Rotary Sustaining Foundation Members
It has three sister clubs, the Rotary Club of Makati
Central, Rotary Club of Metro Cebu and Rotary Club of
East Davao.
It has sponsored the charter of the Rotary club of
Surigao Midtown Jewels, an all-ladies club in Zone 3B1,
hosted the 29th District Assembly (DISTAS) in May
2003. Rotary Club of Metro Surigao has produced the
first District Governor in the person of PDG Fernando A.
Almeda, Jr. one of unsurpassed success in the history
of the Rotary Club of Metro Surigao and from zone 3B1.

THE BEGINNINGS OF ROSA

The Rotary Outstanding Surigaonon Award or ROSA
was launched sometime in 1987 by the Rotary Club of
Metro Surigao mainly through the efforts of our Charter
President Josefino “Peping” Miranda with the all-out
support of Past President Alfonso “Pons” Casurra.
Vision
Surigaonons, both men and women, who have given
honor, prestige and “service above self” to Surigao. It is
only fitting therefore that when we looked for the
acronym for the laudable project, we instantly settled for
the words ROSA which, as we all know, stands for a
rose, the queen of flowers.
Eighteen years later, after ROSA has not wilted at all.
On the contrary, it has become a respected institution
and tradition not only in our club but in Surigao as a
whole. Today, we finally have a registered foundation
that will not only perpetuate ROSA but see to it that our
annual conferment ceremony is assured of the fullest
support in all aspects, most especially in funding.
To be recipient of the ROSA trophy now, is truly a
distinction honoring one’s lifetime work in blood, sweat
and tears. The council of past presidents of our club and
its current board of directors zealously see to it that only
the best and the brightest are chosen for an award in
various professions or endeavors.
Some of the stringent criteria are: the nominee must be
a Surigaonon by birth or parentage. His or her
contribution in advancing and promoting the Surigaonon
image in whatever field must be significant and beyond
question. A Metro Rotarian or anyone related to an
officer or member of the club is not qualified for the
award and no proxy is allowed to receive it on behalf of
the nominee. A recipient must be a role model of the
highest quality and his or her moral character beyond
reproach.
Are we honoring supermen whose feats and
accomplishment are beyond reach by ordinary mortals?
No. Far from it. Every ROSA awardee is an ordinary
human being like you and me. In the end, what matters
most is that everyone of them cared, were concerned
and sought to serve above and beyond self where
others turned their backs from chance to make a real
difference and touch the lives of many, many of our
suffering fellowmen.
The foundation will serve as the pillar of strength and
sparkling of the ROTARY CLUB OF METRO SURIGAO
in the fulfillment of its aims and objectives to be the most
motivated, dedicated and service oriented Rotary Club
of District 3860 through the efficient delivery of the
different avenues of service to the community of Surigao
using the object of Rotary and the 4-way test as its
guidelines.
Mission
To achieve the vision, the Foundation through the
experience and expertise of the founding fathers who
were past presidents, will augment and assist the
ROTARY CLUB OF METRO SURIGAO in the
implementation of some of its ambitious projects.
Initially, it will relieve the general membership of the
physical and financial burden in the preparation for the
prestigious ROSA awarding and the complexities of the
Rotary Foundation in its desire to enlist more Paul Harris
Fellows. The Rotary Club of Metro Surigao will then
concentrate in it effort to reach out and follow the dream
of service to humanity.
