Our role as a teacher is not to take from the Indigenous Australian community under the superficial
premise of achieving a syllabus dot point. We must be willing to genuinely engage with the community
and be willing to share and better our students and their wider community through our own skills and
time. We must be willing to listen to them and strive to become more culturally competent educators

WEEK 2
TALK WITH TWO SURVIVORS OF WEEK 4
THE KINCHELA BOYS HOME CULTURAL TOUR AROUND THE ROCKS

We were positioned in a circle -

everyone was on equal ground to
each other. The oral narratives
shared by the two Elders shed
light on the ongoing ramificiations
caused by the Stolen Generation
upon the lives of Indigenous
Australians and their families and
communities.

I drew this picture to symbolise

the power of listening to their
stories and the feeling of
connection that was shared
within this small space.
