What We Did, What’s Coming Up:
Language Arts:
Our shared reading this week was the book Hands Can by Cheryl Willis Hudson. We learned a
new sight word and added it to our word wall: can. We are finding our sight words everywhere
in our classroom and our books! This week we talked about rhyme and found words that rhyme
in our shared reading book.

Our focus read aloud this week was The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.

Our writer’s workshop mentor text this week was When I Get Bigger by Mercer Mayer. Our topic
we are focusing on is things we like to do with our families.

Next week we will add computers to our rotations. We have been working hard at learning our
usernames and passwords.

Math:
This week in math, we were introduced to our Counting Books and our Counting Jar books. We learned how to play Grab
and Count and Roll and Record. For Grab and Count, we grabbed one handful of snap cubes, counted them using a
counting strategy, wrote the number, and drew a representation of the number. We compared how many we can grab
with our neighbor’s grab. For Roll and Record, we rolled a subitizing dice (dots 1-6) and wrote the numeral on our recording
sheet. Whichever number reached the top first won!

Content:
This week, we learned about some of our senses. We explored hearing, smelling, seeing, and touching. We went on a
nature walk around our school to look for different objects in nature. We created texture collages with various items that
were soft, hard, squishy, rough, smooth, etc. We used our sense of smell to determine what was in a covered cup. We had
peppermint, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon, orange, and coconut smells. We had to listen with our ears and decide what was
hidden in a cup. We heard things like pasta, rocks, cotton balls, etc. Next week we will investigate our sense of taste with
apples!
