CHAPTER 1

1 Introduction

This document is intended to provide an overview of AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1 (AVEVA
Bocad™ 3.1) and the capabilities introduced.

1.1 Introducing AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1

AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 features a unique generic data model which is readily adaptable to the widest possible
range of industry applications. Unlike many competitors solutions which are designed only for specific
industries, this flexible, generic nature enables AVEVA Bocad™ to be used effectively for any type of structural
steelwork design. Because of high flexibility it can be extended and optimised to meet new requirements.
AVEVA Bocad™ is a real engineer’s detailed design tool; it works the way engineers work and incorporating
the latest Microsoft® Fluent™ interface technology. That means it does not require extensive user retraining.
Importantly, it integrates with all architectural, mechanical, plant and marine multi-discipline design systems,
sharing the same technology platform as AVEVA Everything3D™, AVEVA PDMS™ and AVEVA Marine
Outfitting™ giving full integration with AVEVA products.

AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 is based on a proven platform of technologies used to:

 Support a wider family of products;

 Support common capabilities such as multi-user,

 Distribute concurrent access to the design model,

 Compare and Update information.

This allows global teams to collaborate in building fully detailed models, from which construction-ready
drawings and BOMs can be automatically generated.

Based on this platform, the application layout has been completely reviewed and a new 3D View has been
introduced. This 3D View shares lots of functionality with AVEVA E3D™ 2.1.

2.4.2 AVEVA Client Cache Service™ 1.0.5

The AVEVA Client Cache Service™ is designed for use on a LAN or WLAN network with full connectivity to
the Database files and can make a considerable improvement to Dabacon database performance. The use of
the Service is strongly recommended for all multi-user projects. The AVEVA Client Cache Service has been
developed to produce an improved performance when reading data over ‘high’ latency networks by minimizing
traffic.

The AVEVA Client Cache Service stores a copy of the read project data on the local disk which improves
performance where there is repeated reading of project data across a computer network. The service operates
by a data request being sent to the local Cache folder to retrieve the required Data (Database Page). If the
data is not within the Cache folder, a Data Request is sent across the network to the central server to retrieve
the required data. Likewise, data that is unchanged since it was previously read is retrieved from the local
Cache whereas Data that has changed in the Database must be read again from the central Database file.
Similarly, data that must be written to a Database file must still be written to that identified file.

The AVEVA Client Cache Service is installed with AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 and can be configured or disabled
using the AVEVA Cache Service Configuration application. The prompted form, seen above, enables an
Administrator to configure the caching threshold level to avoid the local hard drive being filled.

 The Default is to stop caching on the Hard Drive on becoming 80% full. When full, data is continued to
be delivered where already cached but no further data is cached until more space is made available. The
Cache persists data locally between sessions – thereby, very often, the start-up will be quicker.

 To ensure the performance benefits of the service are realised, Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ)
must be enabled. This is achieved using the Windows Components feature of Windows Control Panel
> Add or Remove Programs.

 For full details, please refer to the AVEVA Client Cache Service™ 1.0.5 User Documentation.

2.4.3 Microsoft® Software

The following Microsoft products are required to support the operation of AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1.

2.4.3.1 Microsoft Office & Fonts

Microsoft Office 2010 (or later) is required for some functions:

 Optimum operation of the AVEVA Platform GUI requires Arial Unicode MS font, supplied with
Microsoft Office and also with Microsoft Office Visio.

 The layout and display of forms and the general user interface can also be adversely affected if
the screen font size is not set to the smallest size.

 AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 has been verified with Microsoft® Office 365.

Chapter 4

4 3D View

The following Chapter will outline general interactions in the 3D View; describing how the View content can
be manipulated and controlled.

 The key interactions described in the following sections are also shared with E3D 2.1.

4.1 3D View Controls

The majority of the controls to manipulate the 3D View can be accessed via mouse action, including the
PowerWheel, and through the 3D View tab user interface.

4.1.1 View Limits

Model elements can be present in the Drawlist but not visible in the 3D View. The 3D View has invisible
limits which clip and hide all elements outside these limits. By default, the view limits are automatically
adjusted to hold the first elements added to the 3D View.

To view the elements that are outside the view, the Limits Extents action
can be invoked from the PowerWheel or 3D View tab.

4.1.2 Zooming

 Rolling the mouse wheel forward will zoom in and

scrolling the wheel backwards zooms out with the zoom
action centred at the point of the cursor.

 Additional zoom options can be found in the Control

group of the 3D View tab and the ZOOM command.

4.1.3 Rotating the 3D View

The Rotation of the model is achieved by holding the

middle mouse button down and moving the mouse in a
direction. By default, the rotation mode is set about the
Model.

The centre of rotation is determined when the button is

pressed. Its position is set where the crosshair touches
an element in the 3D View. The centre of rotation will be
indicated by a pink pin while rotating.

4.1.4 View Direction

It is also possible to set the view direction by using a preset, like an isometric direction, an orthogonal
direction, or a plan direction.

4.1.5 Panning

Panning enables the contents of the 3D View to be moved

across the view in any direction.

In the 3D View, holding the <Ctrl> key down and holding

the middle mouse button whist moving the cursor will pan
the view.

4.1.6 Centre View

Clicking the Centre View button in the Control group of the 3D

View tab will move the view so that it is centred on the Current
Element.

The View can also be centred by a middle mouse button click.

4.1.7 Walk & Fly Modes

In addition to the classic View Controls, the Walk and Fly Modes allow the user to visualise the 3D Model
from a moving observer point of view and in perspective mode (with a 90 degree field of view).

To activate or deactivate the modes, the Walk

Mode or the Fly Mode toggles can be selected
from the Control group of the 3D View tab.

 Pressing <Esc> or clicking the (Walk Mode) button will exit the mode and restore the view.

In Walk Mode, the cursor will appear as a walking man.

In Fly Mode, the cursor will appear as a paper airplane.

When the cursor is above the crosshair, the observer will rotate upward, and
when the cursor is below the crosshair the observer will rotate downward.

When the cursor is on the right of the crosshair the observer will turn right,
and when the cursor is on the left of the crosshair the observer will turn left.

The distance between the cursor and the crosshair will determine the speed
of the rotation. The further the cursor is from the crosshair, the faster the
rotation will be.

 Holding the <Shift> key down will increase the walking speed, holding the <Ctrl> key down will
decrease the walking speed

4.2 Clipping the View

Clipping allows the user to isolate a region of the model by hiding all parts of the model falling outside a
user-defined clipping box.

The tools and options for clipping are located in the Clip
group of the 3D View tab.

Create: Displays two options to create a clipping box: about a graphical selection, or to the
Current Element.

Clip: Toggle to enable or disable the clipping by hiding or showing the parts of the model
outside the clipping box.

Add Within: Populates the 3D View with elements that are wholly or partially within the clipping
box.

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1
User Bulletin

Modify: Toggle to show or hide the graphical clipping box aid for modification.

Once the clipping box has been created, its position and dimensions can be adjusted by double
clicking on the box and manipulating the grips.

Cap: Toggle to enable or disable the capping, i.e. closing the sides of the elements that are
cut by the clipping box.

 The capping colour can be changed from the View Settings form.

4.3 Selecting Elements

Visible items in a 3D View can be grouped together to form a Graphical Selection which can then be used
in conjunction with an AVEVA E3D function or task (and also populate the Properties Grid).

 Elements included in a Graphical Selection are highlighted with a solid green line around the
extremities of the constituent parts of the item(s).

A graphical selection can be created by:

 Selecting elements individually.

 Using a selection window.

The graphical selection will consist of significant elements, for example, elements that contain a geometric
definition. Elements of type DTPROF, DTPLATE, or DTBOLT, can be part of a graphical selection but
administrative elements such as DTJOB, DTPHASE, SITE or ZONE will not be included in a selection.

4.3.1 Selecting Individual Elements

Clicking on an element in the 3D View makes it the Current Element and creates a new graphical selection
containing that single item.

The <Ctrl> key can be used to add an item to the current selection or remove it where already selected.

 The <Ctrl> keys will not have any effect if the multiple selection mode is enabled via the Properties
Grid.

Navigating to an element in the Model Explorer will cancel the current selection. The Current Element will
be highlighted in blue in the 3D View and populate the Properties Grid but will not be part of a selection.

 It is possible to make a graphical selection from the Model Explorer by a right click on an element
and choose 3D View > Select. All the element’s members will be included in the selection if they are
significant. This will also add them to the 3D View if they are not already displayed.

is formed from the right to the left.

The window is coloured green.

 Using the window while holding the <Ctrl> key will add or remove elements to the current graphical
selection.

4.4 Properties Grid

The Properties Grid displays Element properties (attribute information) in an accessible and user friendly
format.

 The Properties Grid in AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1. is mainly used to get information on selected elements.
This is not an editing tool.

 By default, the Properties Grid is docked in the right Panel. If not opened, it can be displayed by
clicking the Properties toggle in the HOME tab, group Display.

It is possible to control the graphical selection mode from the Properties Grid by two presented options:

5 Model Explorer and Flexible Explorer

5.1 Introduction

The Model Explorer and Flexible Explorer are tools to explore the design database. The Model Explorer
displays the database hierarchy and all elements of the different DESIGN databases of the current MDB.
Either elements from Layout model and Detail model can be explored with the Model Explorer.

The Flexible Explorer is generated on runtime for different rules and grouping. These rules can be
customized in Lexicon. The Flexible Explorer displays only Detail model elements of the active job.

Explorers can be accessed from the Tools tab in Explorer group.

5.2 Model Explorer

The Model Explorer is displayed by default on the left side of the application docked as sliding form.

The Model Explorer displays SITE from Layout

and DTWRLD (Detailing World) owning 1 DTJOB
for Bocad.

Element in bold are claimed by current user.

Click on an element in the tree view to navigate to

the element in the database and make it the
current element.

Drag and Drop the element to 3D View to add it

to the drawlist (content of the 3D View).

Right Click displays a contextual menu with

several options.

Different commands are available to query the

attributes of, rename, delete, copy and paste
database elements. These commands are not
applicable to all elements.

Commands to Add or Remove elements from the

Drawlist are also available.

On a DTJOB element, a command to Add

Referenced Grids allows to add to the 3D View
only the REFRGRID elements which are
referenced by the active job and stored on another
location.

5.3 Flexible Explorer

The Flexible Explorer rules can be defined by the user. The rules are defined in a specific Dictionary
database and these are defined in Lexicon (module of AVEVA Administration). Each structure is shown in
the explorer as a hierarchy, starting from a separate root node and displaying database items organised
according to their designation, Phase and so on, depending on their definition in Lexicon. Name displayed
and other elements can also be customised.

 Please refer to the Lexicon User Documentation for further details about creation of Flexible Explorer
rules.

The AVEVA Bocad Sample Projects provides 2 types of rules. One with hierarchies defined by element
Designation and one by Job Structure (phases and assembly).

The Flexible Explorer is dynamically updated when new elements are created or elements are modified.

Claimed elements by current users are in Bold, claimed elements by other user are in italic.

6 Integration

6.1 Integration with AVEVA Everything 3D™ 2.1

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1 introduces the ability to display Layout data in the 3D View.

Piping, Equipment, HVAC, Structural Layout and other disciplines if included in the same project and MDB
can be added to the Drawlist and be visualised as reference elements. User can also take information using
Properties Grid or Tooltips on layout elements.

 AVEVA Sample Project for E3D 2.1. Fix 7 is compatible with AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1.
One Team for Detailing and some DB are ready to use.

AVEVA Everything 3D™ 2.1 with Fix 7 is capable to display Bocad Detailing elements in the 3D View.
Bocad Detailing elements are also cashable against other disciplines. Information and attributes can be
queried but modification of Detailing element cannot be performed in E3D.

Obviously, this is possible if the DB is in same project or referenced and included in the active MDB.

 Bocad Detailing elements schema and attributes are only included with E3D 2.1 Fix 7 and it is not
compatible with PDMS / Outfitting 12.1 series.

 AVEVA Bocad Steel Interface can be used to transfer structural elements from Layout model element
to Detail model element. Required to generate Bocad element from an existing Layout model.

6.2 Integration with AVEVA E3D Insight™ 2.2

AVEVA Bocad elements are also visible in AVEVA E3D Insight™ 2.2.

AVEVA E3D Insight has always had the ability for users to add comments which can be annotated, or
complimented with files or photos.

By adding this same capability to AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 a round tripping of full Comment Threads is now
possible.

The ability for the AVEVA E3D Insight™ user to have significant dialogues directly with the E3D™ designer
or Bocad Detailer on projects will help the design and construction process by driving out errors in design
or the mismatch of information of physical elements on the construction site.

6.3 Comments

Comments allow a designer to inspect and review the design in real time and provide comments and
suggestions for improvements or changes.

Comments are created and administered via the Comments

form, prompted by the Comments button in the Display group of
the Tools tab.

The organisation and display of comments is aided by the following:

 Comment Thread
A comment thread is linked to one or more elements in a DESI database and contains the following
data: Subject, Date & Time, Creator, State, Comment Posts, associated user-defined Attributes, and a
list of Elements the comment thread is linked to.

 Comment Post
An individual comment post within a Comment Thread contains the following data: Comment Text, Date
& Time, Creator, Comment Captures and Attachments.
 Please note that attachments are limited to 20MB.

 Comment Capture
A comment capture is a snapshot of the 3D View with additional mark-up and is formed as an image

6.3.1 Comment Threads in the Database

Comment Threads are stored in a Cross Product (XPRD) database.

Comment Captures include information to enable to recreate the model view, as shown in the Comment
Capture, in AVEVA Bocad™, AVEVA E3D™ or AVEVA E3D Insight™. This allows for inspection of the
current state of the model. The Comment Capture model view information is stored in a Model View World
(MVIWLD) that must be present in the Cross Product database.

There are a few aspects to setup before Commenting can be used.

 Make sure at least one Cross Product (XPRD) database is available in the MDB
Comment Threads, Comment Posts and everything related are stored in Cross Product databases.

 Create Comment Worlds (CMTWLD)

There must be at least one writable Comment World but there can be as many Comment Worlds as
needed. Different locations must have their own Comment World.

 Please refer to the AVEVA Lexicon User Guide for further information on how to create Comment
Worlds for different scenarios.

 Create Model View Worlds (MVIWLD)

There must be at least one writable Model View World in the Cross Product database.

 AVEVA Bocad Sample project (BSP and STP) include the required DB and elements to start using
Comment.

6.4 Job Position and Orientation

Detailing Job Position and Orientation are set during job creation. Job position and orientation are defined
with respect to the World. It allows to position different job relatively to each other and eventually to Layout
model.

Position is defined by 3 coordinates in East (or West), North (or South) and Up (or Down) directions, in
the units set for distance. East, North, Up directions is equivalent to X, Y, Z.

Orientation can be defined for X axis or for Y axis. By default, the X direction is East (E), Y direction North
(N). If a rotation is required, the syntax to use is as following: first direction origin like E, then angle and
direction for the angle. For example, E 45 S means, X is east rotated by 45° to the South. The Y direction
is derived from the X direction and vice-versa.

All coordinates, position of element defined by Bocad commands are with respect to the active job position
and orientation.

The Reference Grids created and referenced by a detailing Job will inherit the same Position and
Orientation. This is necessary to keep the grids at same position as the job in the world. If for some reason

All rights reserved.
AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1
User Bulletin

the Position and Orientation of the job needs to be modified, the same modification must be done on the
reference grids referenced by the job.

The AVEVA Bocad Steel Interface gives the possibility at Export (from E3D or PDMS) to set a model origin
and rotation (orientation). This should be used to define the origin of the Detailing Job which will be used
when Importin the abs file. Automatically, the Origin and Rotation defined are applied to the active Job.
This means that the position and orientation with respect to the world of the Layout structural elements
and the Detailing elements will be the same.

 If the job position and orientation were already defined and equal to ABSI file, it will have no impact.
It is necessary to modify the position and orientation of existing Reference Grids referenced by the
Job after import. Or create new Reference Grids and delete previous one.

7 Reporting

7.1 Introduction

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1 firstly integrates the Report Designer (Custom Reports) as a
more structured and detailed method of creating reports. The Report Designer is an add-in to the application
comprising an interactive, visual report designing tool, allowing to easily produce high-quality deliverable
style reports in various output formats, including CSV, PDF, and HTML. These reports can include images,
for example, Company Logos, information based colouring, and include headers and footers.

Using standardised components, handling of the Report Designer and creation of custom reports follows
same concepts and identical look-and-feel as in other AVEVA products, such as AVEVA E3D™ or AVEVA
FabTrol.

The Report Designer utilises two file formats:

 Layout Templates (.repx) - contains the report presentation, for example, formatting and graphics.
The Layout Template is used to define the basic structure for Report Designer reports but do not
contain data and cannot be run.

 Report (.repv) – in addition to containing the report presentation, this file format also contains the data
source and can be run.

Report files do not contain any project settings and are therefore transportable between projects.
However, the transfer is only successful where the projects share the same element and attribute
structures.

Designer tab, in the Report group, Open... button and selecting the required report via a Browser.

Starting this way, general templates or definitions can be taken as a starting point, and be customised
quickly by exchanging the company logo, colours, elements, etc.

7.5.2 Report data source

The project data is used to create and customise data-centric reports to meet project or customer
requirements. The data source is integrally bound to the report, with controls in the report linked to data
fields in the data source.

A Report can be bound to data from the AVEVA Bocad project database. Once a data source has been
defined, the elements from within that source can be further restricted by defining a data source scope.

Two different data sources are possible:

 New Data Source from Individual Queries

The data to be reported is created as required by the user using the Report Designer Data Source
Wizard, or the Search utility within AVEVA Bocad™.

 Pre-defined Data Source from Stored Queries

Report Designer is able to report and bind to pre-defined data from stored queries known as
Database Views. A Database View (Element View, Project View or User View) can be shared
across a project.

It is envisaged that an Administrator would create and refine individual User Views prior to exposing
the View to all Users by copying it to a project dictionary database, where it would become a Project
View.

7.6 Report template storage

Chapter 8

8 Administration and multi-user

8.1 Introduction

The introduction of DABACON database to store Bocad elements, jobs and projects has an impact on how
projects are organised and administrated. In this section, concepts of DABACON Project administration
and some recommendations are introduced. Also, Multi-User functionality and usage are described.
Finally, some guidance to set up an existing DABACON projects to be used with AVEVA Bocad Structural
Detailing™ 3.1 is given.

DABACON is a proved technology used for decades by AVEVA products such as PDMS and E3D. The
Administration concepts of a project are similar to other products using DABACON.

 For more details about Administration, please refer to AVEVA Administration documentation.

8.2 Dabacon Project Administration

A Dabacon Project is essentially a collection of databases with other required elements such as Teams,
Users and Multiple DataBases (MDBs, grouping of database).

Dabacon has several database types that are used for different purposes:

 DESI Design Database

 CATA Catalogue Database

 PROP Properties Database

 DICT Dictionary Database

 XPRD Cross-Product Database

 Etc.

For Layout and Detail model elements, the DESI Database type is used.

AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1. is not using the Catalogue and Properties Database so far. The Dictionary database
is used to store Flexible Explorer rules (LEXICON). The Cross-Product database is used for Comments.

Some databases which contains information to be shared by various project can be referenced by the
project. These referenced databases are known as Foreign Databases.

Databases are owned by Team. Users are assigned to one or more Teams. Being a member of a Team
gives a User write access to the databases owned by that Team.

A Multiple Database (MDB) is a collection of databases of all types, including foreign databases.

A project can have many MDBs.

For a large project including layout model and many detailing jobs (structures), the jobs can be stored in
different databases or in one single database. The recommendation is to have separate databases for each
jobs which allows more flexibility and the ability to backtrack session only for that job.

For single jobs and smaller companies’ set-up, the different jobs can either be stored on one Project and
one database or on several Projects.

 STRUCTURALDETAILEDDESIGN Module 106 must be defined to be able to open an existing

DABACON project with AVEVA Bocad™ Detail module. Refer AVEVA Administration user
documentation to have more information about Module Definition.

8.3 Database and detailing element type

AVEVA Bocad Detailing elements and model are stored on a DESIGN Database same DB Type as Layout
Element (PDMS or AVEA E3D). However, the administrative elements and model elements are specific to
Bocad and Detailing purposes. In other words, Bocad is not using GENSEC or PANEL for profiles and
plates but DTPROF and DTPLATE elements. Depending on Product license users have write access to
certain element types. Therefore, a Bocad user is not allowed to modify a Layout element.

Most Bocad Detailing elements are pre-fixed with DT as Detailing.

The root administrative element is a Detailing World (DTWRLD) element. This element can be created in
AVEVA Administration 1.5.0.2 when creating a new DESIGN database. A Detailing World must be
specified at creation of a new job, this administrative element is therefore used to organise the project and
select the database to store the new Job.

 DTWRLD element can also be created in Bocad using the Command NEW DTWRLD in a Command
Window.

The Detailing Job (DTJOB) element is the second administrative element. A Detailing Job is equivalent
to “project” or “order” in previous Bocad version. It contains a structure which can be divided in Phases,
which can be marked, for which different deliverables can be produced (shop, assembly drawings,
BOM,…). Even though several jobs can be stored on the same project, Bocad commands only work on the
active Job.

The Detailing Phase (DTPHSE) element is the third administrative element. The Detailing Phase can be
used to divide the job into different mounting phases, area, structure class.

The Detailing Main (DTMAIN) element represent the main assemblies. Several elements connected with
a shop connection are owned by one DTMAIN.

The detailing model elements are Profile (DTPROF), Plate (DTPLAT), Weld (DTWELD), Bolt (DTBOLT)
and Structural connection (DTSTRC).

In addition to these, different system elements are owned by a Detailing Job Data (DTJDAT) element.
These elements contain information referenced by different other elements in the model (for example, bolts
information, relations). There are some other systems elements which are not described in this document.

Graphics and points which can also be stored in the database are stored respectively in DGRAPH element
and DTPDEF element. Different element types are defined for each graphic type (for example, text, line),
points are stored as DTPOIN element. These elements are owned by DTPHSE.

8.4.1 Introduction

Multiple users can open and access simultaneously a DABACON Project. This a proven technology used
by the different AVEVA applications using DABACON database. In general, multi-user handling and
administration are therefore the same for AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 compared to other applications.

Read/Write control is based on membership of TEAM owning DB. The control of elements is based on
claiming. Implicit claiming is used. That means that as soon as an element is created or modified by a
user, this element is claimed and cannot be modified by other users. Multi-write and Implicit Claiming
Databases must be used for AVEVA Bocad DESI DB.

The Save Work command updates the databases with user changes and saves configuration and views
of opened job for the current user.

The Get Work command retrieves changes done by other users.

These 2 commands are available in Quick Access Toolbar or in Project Tab.

Several Jobs stored on the same project can be opened simultaneously by multiple users.

A particularity of AVEVA Bocad is the requirement to have multi-users working on the same Detailing Job
(DTJOB). In AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1, the Phase (DTPHSE) is the claiming level. This means that as soon as
a user activates or modifies a Phase, the complete Phase including its members is claimed. If a user tries
to modify an element claimed by another user, a warning message pops up and the command is be
performed.

File based technology is used for Configurations, Views and Drawing and some temporary files. These files
are stored in a folder under the Project (named boc_mdbname). Each user has its own copy of these files
in a folder named as the Windows user login.

8.4.2 Multiple user working in 1 Job - Claim / Unclaim elements

Multiple users can work simultaneously on the same Job. The claiming mechanism is used implicitly to
avoid any modifications divergence between users.

The claiming level is the Phase (DTPHSE element), it means that as soon as a user modify an element
owned by a Phase, the complete Phase and its members are claimed by the user. It is also the case when
a user changes the active Phase, using the Change Phase command from Phase and Grid Tab or using
the combo list on the Status bar. Of course, a new created phase is claimed by the user.

If a phase is claimed by other user, the information is displayed in the in Change Phase form and Status
bar. If the user selects a claimed phase to make it active, a warning message pops up to tell the user that
it’s not possible to claim the phase as already claimed by another user, the active phase remains
unchanged.

When the Create Phase form is opened, Get Work command is applied to make sure that new phases
which have been created by other users are known. This is important to avoid any clash in Phase
numbering. In the same order, just after the Phase creation, a partial Save Work is applied to save the
new DTPHSE element in the Database and make it available for other users.

 It’s good practice to have 1 user responsible for the Phase creation. This is required to have a better
organisation of the job.

Any other elements not owned by DTPHSE are also claimed implicitly as soon as they are modified or
created.

At the end of a session, all elements are unclaimed and can be accessed by other users.

Using the Multiwrite Claim Lists form accessible from the Tools tab, Manage Group, it’s possible to:

 get information about elements claimed by current user or by other users,

 highlight in the 3D View elements depending on their claiming status and

 Claim or Unclaim manually elements.

In the Multiwrite Claim Lists form, different Claim Lists can be accessed. The current user claimed
elements are populated in the Active Claimlist.

User Bulletin

 Please refer to the AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1. documentation for further information
on usage of Multiwrite Claim Lists form

A warning message pops up if an Element Claimed by other User is picked during any modification
commands. Furthermore, the command interrupts or the selection is reset.

As it’s not possible to modify element claimed by other user, it’s not possible to create connection (Weld,
Bolts or Structural connection) or apply a Construction Macro or BoEdit to elements claimed by other
users.

Marking operation requires that all element to be marked (Start List) and considered for marking
(Consideration list) are claimed by current user. A warning message pops up if it’s not the case.

8.4.3 Files organization – sharing drawings

AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 utilises file based technology for Configurations, Views and Drawing and some other
temporary files.

Each Job have an associated folder to store these files. This folder is located in the Project folder and
named boc_mdbname (mdbname being the name of the MDB used to create the job).

For example: .. \BSP\boc_ALL

These files need to be stored for each user. Indeed, each user can save his own configuration, views and
create or modify his own drawings. Therefore, in the boc_mdbname folder, different folders named as
Windows login are created for each user opening a Job.

In addition, a folder named all.users will contain the initial files for configuration and main views which
are saved the very first time the job is saved. These files are used for new users opening the job. The files
are copied to the user job folder when the job is opened for the first time or if the user’s job folder does not
exist. The job files contained in all.users are not used when a job is opened, this folder is only a backup
and the files are copied to different users folder as explained. Therefore, this folder can be used to save
configurations the administrator wants to share with different users.

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1
User Bulletin

Only the boc3db and config folder are copied automatically from the all.users to a new user opening
the job. If other files need to be shared like drawings, these can be copied or moved manually using the
Windows Explorer functions.

Here are more details about the folder contents:

 boc3db folder: Contains the different bmf_ main views files and the rfc/fsc folder.

o rfc/fsc folder: Contains the configuration of macro executed by the users and some
temporary files.

 Config folder: Contains mainly .rsc, .inp and .def files which are all configurations and
settings of the different forms. This includes representation settings for views, filters, automatic
drawing settings and marking settings.

 List folder: Contains the different files for list and reporting when generated.

 Plots folder: Contains the different drawing files.

 Temp folder: Contains temporary files.

 Some other folder can be created by different command, for example, interfaces, absi.

It is important to understand that the source of a configuration is first the job config, then the
client/config and lastly the config-work.en from the installation. That means if a configuration file
is not existing in the job, the one from client if exist is used, if not the one from installation is used. Anyway,
all files are always saved in the job folder for the user.

Different users can work on drawing files but not simultaneously on same files. If drawing needs to be
handover to another user, it’s recommended to move these to the user plot folder.

Copy the different drawings to the all.users folder can also be a solution to share drawings.

8.4.4 Project location

By default, the projects folder is set by installation to C:\AVEVA\Bocad\Projects_3.1. This is set in an

environment variable Projects_Dir which can be set in the batch file launching the application
(aveva_bocad_3_1.bat). To share projects with different users, projects must be stored on a server. It’s
recommended to map a drive for the project location and set the Projects_Dir accordingly.

Example: SET PROJECTS_DIR=S:\

The different projects initialisation calls must be defined in custom_evars.bat located in the
Projects_Dir. This file can be appended automatically by AVEVA Admin Project creation wizard.

9 Additional Information

Please refer also to the Product Release Letter included with the release.

9.1 Functionalities compared with previous products

In addition to new functionalities described in this document, AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1.
includes at the release all main functionalities of products AVEVA Bocad Steel and AVEVA Bocad Offshore
2 series.

The functionalities of listed modules or add-in are not in 3.1 at release.

 Tower

 Roof and Wall

 Glazing

 Pre-Cast Concrete

 Timber

As AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 technology platform and user interface are very different compared to previous
versions, some of the functionalities cannot be maintained. Major differences or removed functionalities are
listed below.

 Libraries (using boc3db)

 Import/Export partial job (using boc3db)

 Grid (conical / radius per plane)

 Grid – Move Grid Plane

 Preview for Construction Macro / Grid / Bolts / Weld creation

 Intermediate points

 Undo/Redo graphics

 Activate/DeActivate element

 Output Translation Tables

 OpenGL views / PDF3D export

 Saving Job with intervals

 BoPrint reporting (replaced by DevExpress)

Some of these functionalities are planned to be replaced or re-implemented in future fixes.

9.2 Client Configuration Data update

The structure and content of client hasn’t changed. Config update is done at initialisation of a new job as
described below. The Profil folder (profile, bolts and welds catalogue) is the same as 2.3 version (no
Usage of AVEVA Catalogue). Macros (Bo-Edit) are compatible between 2.3 and 3.1.

Client Config update is following the same process as the previous version.

61

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1
User Bulletin

The files from config are updated when a new job is created. As these are copied on job/config, the
second step is to do a Save config to client folder.

Client update from 2.2 SP1 is possible. The update must be done first to 2.3 using the Bocad Admin 2.3
update tool. Refer to 2.3 User Bulletin for more information. Therefore, first make sure your config files are
up-to-date (2.3 Fix#10).

As mentioned in 9.2.3, it is required to delete DBF files (deselmname.dbf, matelmname.dbf and

prfelmname.dbf) used for translation as this can lead to incompatibility.

Macro Explorer folder must be renamed from macroexplorer to macexpl.

The Boprint formular are not used anymore in AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 and can therefore be deleted (folder
config/boprint).

 As AVEVA Bocad™ 3.1 is a major release, it is recommended to review your customer settings and
test these as some incompatibilities can exist with some old settings. Contact your local support if
required.

9.2.1 Libraries – import/export partial jobs

Libraries uses “boc3db” database therefore this functionality is not available anymore. This will be
replaced in future. So far there is no possibility to convert or update libraries.

This is the same with Import/Export partial “project”.

9.2.2 Undo Redo

The AVEVA Bocad™ database has a built-in undo/redo capability. Applications can define a start/end
transaction and wind back to the start of that transaction.

Undo cannot be done after a Save Work.

Undo / Redo graphics element mode is not available within AVEVA Bocad 3.1™. So far it is not possible
to undo creation or modification of graphics (if not stored on DB) on a drawing or view.

9.2.3 Output translation table

The dynamic translation mechanism which allows to translate Profile, Designation and Material of
Profile or Plates is no longer available in Global Settings / Output.

Translation table for Bolts and connection elements translation is still used in background
(fstelmname.dbf) so that bolt elements are translated accordingly to the used language from the
default catalogue. However, it is not possible to customise the output.

Therefore, all Profile, Designation or Material must be set and defined accordingly in the required output
language or format.

When updating Client data from previous versions, it is required to delete the following files:
deselmname.dbf, matelmname.dbf and prfelmname.dbf.

9.2.4 Save Job

There is no automatic saving of the jobs. User should explicitly save the work to the database. It’s not
possible to do a “save as”. Some other possibilities exist using AVEVA Administration for instance
rollback to previous session, copy Databases.

 Please refer the AVEVA Administration user guide for more information about Databases
management.

AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ 3.1
User Bulletin

9.3 Element Ident number / deleted elements

Ident number (100000) of elements will vary between session. In the background an Ident Map is used to
map ident numbers with the Reference Number of the DB DABACON element.

Deleted elements do not longer exist in the database as soon as they are deleted.

Function to “purge” the database and deleted elements is therefore obsolete.

Following this, the Filter lists functionality only works within the same session.

9.4 Other limitations

 Unicode filenames

AVEVA recommends the use of ASCII (Basic Latin) filenames for two reasons: compatibility with other
systems and various specific issues, which are not yet resolved. This applies to some of the systems to
which AVEVA Bocad is interfaced, and even to some of the interfaces where AVEVA Bocad makes use of
third party software.

 Path length

Lot of AVEVA Bocad commands need access to files (drawing, text, dbf,…), the path used is relative to the
job folder. It is recommended for most functions such as interfaces, open lists or mapping files, to store the
files in the job folder directly.

Setting the Project Units

Session Units enable the user to display the output of values on forms and input values in forms in a unit other
than the system units. For example, AVEVA Bocad works internally in millimetres, however, distance and bore
input and display units can be modified to suit the user during a session.

Attribute values are stored in databases in the system units and are converted on input and output to the
current session units.

 The Session Units is only applicable to Attribute form, Properties Grid, Command window and PML
queries. Other Bocad function units (input and output) are sets by Global Settings dialog.

 For full Imperial project – US language / config must be used. In addition, a Catalogue DB including a
UNIT element with feet & inches for distance should be added to the MDB (this is the case in STP project
ALL_IMP MDB)

On the PROJECT tab, selecting Options >

Systems > Units displays the Session Units form.

The left pane of the form displays a list of the

available unit types that can be modified and their
current setting.

Clicking on a unit type in this list displays a list of

the available session units in the pane to the right.
The current unit is denoted by the notation > unit
<.

Clicking one of the other available units and then

clicking the Set <unit type> Unit button, where
<unit type> is the selected type, makes the
selected unit the current session unit for that type
and updates the left pane list.

By default, Distance units are metric whilst other unit types have a mixture of Metric and Imperial units to
relevant to industry practice. For example, bore has Millimetres and Inch available. Some unit types, for
example, Current, Voltage and Impedance have only one unit available.

Imperial distance units can be made the default by including a UNIT element in a Catalogue database.

The Save / Restore frame enables the current session units to be set to current project defaults and saved
and restored by clicking appropriate button.

Session Units enable the user to display the output of values on forms and input values in forms in a unit
other than the system units. For example, AVEVA Bocad works internally in millimetres, however, distance
and bore input and display units can be modified to suit the user during a session.

Attribute values are stored in databases in the system units and are converted on input and output to the
current session units.
