What is Law?
 A set of established rules and norms (has to be an authority that creates
them), that defines the right and obligations of persons, and are enforceable
before a court of law for justice
 Rules of course outline and obligations are transferred to the student and
the student is responsible for reading it and following the rules
 UOttawa is going to have policy for non academic behavior, UBrock rules and
responsibilities, uottawa can revoke diploma if after the fact you violate the
norms and rules of society

4 basic way of resolve law conflicts


 Negotiation: how do we settle based on compromises, negotiate based on
compromise
 Mediation: a third party will try to help resolve the conflict, mediation in
human rights (pregnant women terminated because company doesn’t want
to pay rights)
 Arbitration: a third party provides a decision in a quasi judicial approach,
looking at the legal process in a similar to court style and the decision is
binding and cannot be appealed, arbitration people are afraid of the
consequences because the have to expose all their files
 Litigation: formal process debating how we get there, how we arrive at a
result, gomeshi files, process needs to be followed,
