Goal:
Prove the seismic withstand of the FKGA2 EA1500 to earthquakes according to IEC standard
Summary:
A seismic study is performed with Ansys software. This study is done by the means of a
spectral analysis which imposes at worst a maximal acceleration of 0,5g for the horizontal
direction and 50% of 0,5g for the vertical direction.
According to IEC standard, load combinations are made by summing horizontal forces and
vertical forces with SRSS.
The model is composed of shell, beam and mass elements. It takes into account the
supporting frame lying on feet, the circuit breaker poles and disconnectors, the drive
mechanisms, the capacitors with their supports and others internal parts.
The analysis of results is made by doing the comparison between the stress observed and the
allowable stress of each part.
The displacements of the structure are also analyzed for the different load cases.
Conclusion:
The seismic study of the FKGA2 circuit breaker, based on a spectral analysis, prove its seismic
withstand to 0.5g earthquakes according to IEC standards. (The minimum safety factor
observed is 1.94 on the frame for the load case 5).

translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions and rotations about the nodal x, y, and z
axes. A different mass and rotary inertia may be assigned to each coordinate direction.
-SURF154: 3D element. SURF154 may be used for various load and surface effect
applications. It may be overlaid onto an area face of any 3-D element. The element is
applicable to 3-D structural analyses. Various loads and surface effects may exist
simultaneously.
The number of nodes and degrees of freedom (dof) per element are:
- SHELL181: 4 nodes per element and 6 dof per node.
- BEAM44: 2 nodes per element and 6 dof per node.
- MASS21: 1 node per element and 6 dof per node.
- SURF154: 4 to 8 nodes per elements and 3 dof per node.

do not allow displacement: Ux=Uy=Uz=0.
The boundary conditions applied to each fixing nodes corresponding to these anchorage
allow every rotations: Rx ≠ 0, Ry ≠ 0 and Rz ≠ 0.
These conditions are applied on the following nodes:

3. Loads
Two types of analysis have been performed on FKGA2: static analysis and spectral analysis.
Static analysis has been performed to simulate the weight of the structure and pressure of wind.
Modal analysis has been made
Static analysis has been done in order to include non participative mass in the spectral analysis.
Spectral analysis has been performed to calculate stresses on the circuit breaker caused by
seism on each direction.
3.2. Wind
Wind velocity considered is 200km/h, v = 200/3.6 m/s (ou 200/3.6*1e-3mm/s)
Air density, ρ = 1.23 kg/m3=1.23e-12 tonne/mm3
According to IEC standard 10% of wind pressure is to be considered with seismic case
Pressure pr=1/10*1.23/2*v²=189.8 N/m²or Pa = 0.1898e-3N/mm² or MPa
Multiplied by Cx=1.5 for flat surfaces and cx=0.9 on cylinders (bushing, element type700)
This pressure is applied in 4 load cases: minus X, minus Y, plus X, plus Y

By launching a spectral analysis, it computes the maximum response of the structure to a given
spectrum at each natural frequency. This maximum response is computed as scale factor *
mode shape. These maximum responses are then combined to give a total response of the
structure.
Spectrum analysis follows a modal analysis in which natural frequencies and mode shapes
have been computed. It needs the sum of effective masses obtained at each mode to
determinate the acceleration to apply to the structure on each direction.
For each mode of the structure, a participation factor (function of the mode shape and the
direction excitation) is calculated in the excitation direction. This is a measure of how much a
mode will contribute to the deflections (and hence stresses) in the direction of excitation.
Spectrum used to perform the spectral analysis is imposed by the IEC standards TR 62271-
300 First edition 2006-11.
IEC spectrum reaches 14000 mm/s² (1.4 g) for a 2% damping material and 8700 mm/s² (0.87
g) for a 5% damping material in the x and y direction.
For the z direction, the acceleration imposed is 50% of X and Y values
For the dynamic calculations, a first calculation has been performed with the dead weight and
static forces applied for the seismic requirements.
Then, a modal analysis of the model is done. It determines the modes and participating mass
of the structure for seismic calculation.
For each direction, a combination of all the modes with the SRSS method is made.
These calculations are done with a spectrum method to take into account the spectrum for
each damping factor.
We combined these results with the results of the first calculations to obtain all the load cases.
Curves which present acceleration versus frequencies are detailed at the annex 6.

5. Conclusion
A seismic analysis of the FKGA2, based upon a spectral method, was carried out.
Safety factors for max bending values are far higher than 1.
Max stress values for metallic components are lower than elastic limit.
Safety factors for metallic components are higher than 1.
The results give the proof of the seismic withstand of the FKGA2 to earthquakes 0.5g IEC.
