TITLE:
“To Determine the Absolute and Kinematic Viscosity of The Given Fluid Sample”

INTRODUCTION:
The Newtonian law derived a mathematical formula relating the viscosity to the resistive drag force
experienced by a thin flat plate “cutting” its way “shearing” through the fluid. The definition was
based on two quantities that is the shear rate which is the speed of the thin plate divided by its
distance from some reference surface, such as the wall of the container. Shear stress is the drag
force experienced by the thin plate divided by its surface area. Viscosity is defined as the shear stress
divided by the shear rate.

OBJECTIVE:
Viscosity describes a fluids internal resistance to flow and may be through of as measure of fluids
friction. Knowing the viscosity of a material also affects how the production and transportation processes
are designed.

PROCEDURE:
 Took the U-Tube Viscometer apparatus and make sure it is clean otherwise firstly clean
apparatus.
 Then put liquid (Amla, Mustard oil, motor oil) in Viscometer.
 Then the value of which is to be measure.
 Now apply sucking force with the help of sucker, if don’t have sucker then suck from the
mouth.
 Then note the time required for the test liquid to flow through a capillary of a known
diameter between two marked points.
 Note the Time period on notebook.
 Then put values in formula to find Viscosity.

RECORD DATA:

Fluid tf(Sec)

Amla Oil 243

Motor Oil 488

Mustard Oil 240

DATA ANALYSIS:

Fluid tf(Sec) tw(Sec) ρf(kg/m3) µf(N.sec/m2) Remarks

Amla Oil 243 4 780 0.0475
Motor Oil 488 4 740 0.0905
Mustard Oil 240 4 830 0.0499

Discussion:

 Firstly write the names of oil used in the lab (Amla, Motor, and Mustard).
 Then note the time in sec of fluids and write in the second column.
 Note the time in sec of water which is moving one mark to other.
 In 4th column write the value of Density from using formula mass over volume.
 In 5th column calculate the Viscosity of fluids by using formula Density of water
multiply time of fluid , Divided by product of density of water and its time and overall
multiply it by viscosity of water.

Conclusion:
From the all analysis the result shows that motor oil take more time then others and of
course its shows that viscosity of motor oil has greatest among other oils (Amla and
Mustard), and Amla has lowest viscosity then others(Motor and Mustard).
