Note: The safety advice below is applicable to general service and diagnostic work on air braking systems and may not all be directly relevant
to the activities and products described in this document.

Before and whilst working on or around air braking systems and devices, the following precautions should be observed in addition to any
specific advice given in this document:

• Always wear safety glasses when working with air pressure.

• Never exceed manufacturer’s recommended air pressures.

• Never look into air jets or direct them at anyone.

• Never connect or disconnect a hose or line containing pressure; it may whip as air escapes.

• Never remove a device or pipe plug unless you are certain all system pressure has been depleted.

• Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brakes, and always chock the wheels as depleting vehicle air system pressure
may cause the vehicle to roll.

• If work is being performed on the vehicle’s air braking system, or any auxiliary pressurised air systems, and if it is necessary to drain the
air pressure from reservoirs, etc., keep clear of brake actuator push rods and levers since they may move as system pressure drops.
Be aware that if the vehicle is equipped with an air dryer system, it can also contain air pressure along with its purge reservoir, if fitted,
even after pressure has been drained from the other reservoirs.

• When working under or around the vehicle, and particularly when working in the engine compartment, the engine should be shut
off and the ignition key removed. Where circumstances require that the engine be running, EXTREME CAUTION should be taken to
prevent personal injury resulting from contact with moving, rotating, leaking, heated or electrically charged components. Additionally,
it is advisable to place a clear sign on or near the steering wheel advising that there is work in progress on the vehicle.

• Examine all pipework for signs of kinks, dents, abrasion, drying out or overheating. Be aware that kinks in pipework may result in air
pressure being trapped in the pipework and associated equipment. Replacement hardware, tubing, hose, fittings, etc. must be of
equivalent size, type and strength as original equipment and be designed specifically for such applications and systems. Check the
attachment of all pipework; it should be supported so that it cannot abrade or be subjected to excessive heat.

• Components with stripped threads or damaged/corroded parts should be replaced rather than repaired. Do not attempt repairs
requiring machining or welding unless specifically stated and approved by the vehicle or component manufacturer.

• Never attempt to install, remove, disassemble or assemble a device until you have read and thoroughly understood the recommended
procedures. Some units contain powerful springs and injury can result if not properly dismantled. Use only the correct tools and
observe all precautions pertaining to use of those tools. Before removing any device note its position and the connections of all
pipework so that the replacement/serviced device can be properly installed. Ensure that adequate support or assistance is provided
for the removal/installation of heavy items.

• Use only genuine Knorr-Bremse replacement parts, components and kits.

• Prior to returning the vehicle to service, make certain all components and systems are leak free and restored to their proper operating
condition.

Welding

To avoid damage to electronic components when carrying out electrical welding, the following precautions should be observed:

• In all cases, before starting any electrical welding, remove all connections from any electronic control units or modules, noting their
position and the order in which they are removed.

• When re-inserting the electrical connectors (in reverse order) it is essential that they are fitted to their correct assigned position - if
necessary this must be checked by PC Diagnostics.

6.2 Safety Advice

WARNING – This equipment must be earthed (grounded).

Ensure that suitably qualified personnel check if all electrical connections (including the power supply and exten-
sion cables) have been connected correctly according to the documentation.

To ensure permanent protection from electric shock, some components, including the PC-compatible signal
interfaces, have been designed in such a way that they limit the operating voltage to a safe value. In order to
maintain this safety level it is essential that the connection interfaces of all connected devices are protected the
same way.
Confirmation from the manufacturers and suppliers of these other devices is required, stating that the interfaces
comply with the requirements according to IEC 1010 (EN 60101).

CAUTION – This equipment may only be used by trained personnel.

WARNING – If you use the CMU in a moving vehicle, ensure that the unit and the
related cables do not affect the driver or present a danger to him.

Use the unit according to this Product Manual

CAUTION – Using the unit for a purpose other than the intended use described by the
manufacturer might undermine the required safety measures.

CAUTION – Ensure that only those transducers required for the current test are
connected to the CMU during the diagnosis and that all transducers are removed after
measuring.

Ensure that all connections are established BEFORE applying voltage to the test system and that the end con-
nection with the lowest voltage is supplied first and disconnected last.

DO NOT use the equipment to measure voltages above 150V AC or DC.

6
Communic ation and Measuring Unit (C M U )
6.2 Safety Advice

CAUTION – If the CMU is used to measure high voltages, these voltages may also
occur on the pins of other connectors of the test system.

Stop using the unit immediately if there is any doubt as to its reliability or suspected damage. Switch it off, unplug
the DC power cable from the vehicle and contact the Knorr-Bremse technical hotline.

Do not connect any devices to the PC-compatible signal interfaces of the CMU if you are not absolutely sure
that it is safe to do so.

Only connect and disconnect devices to and from PC-compatible signal interfaces of the CMU if the CMU is
turned off.

CAUTION – Obtain confirmation from the manufacturers and suppliers of other

devices you want to use, stating that the interfaces comply with the requirements

according to IEC 1010 (EN 60101).

Ensure that the air supply of the unit is not obstructed. Insufficient ventilation may lead to overheating, impair the
reliability of the device and shorten its lifespan.

Make sure that the unit cannot come into contact with liquids.

CAUTION – Unless explicitly stated, there are no parts under the covers that can be
serviced by the user. Do not remove the fitted covers unless you are authorized/
qualified to modify the unit. Always disconnect the unit from the power supply (unplug
the DC power cable from the vehicle) before removing a cover. Make sure all covers are
replaced before reconnecting the equipment to the vehicle voltage.

WARNING – If cables are run outdoors/outside the workshop, do not use if there is a
risk of lightning strikes.

There is a risk of electric shock if a component of the equipment is not properly grounded. The electric current
flows through the wiring and can affect every device which is connected. It is recommended to check the
safety of the electric cables on a regular basis, and particularly after making changes to the wiring.
When modifying the signal wiring to the unit, disconnect the power supply of the unit and of the devices
connected to it.

RF setup is done with the program KBConfig.exe, which can be found in the Windows® autostart folder. This
program checks for available RF cards and displays, if necessary, a dialog for configuring the SSID of the card.

The setup program works together with the RemoteCodeServer. The program uses the following registry key to
locate RCSMon.exe: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\GenRad\\SYSTEM\\CardServices\\DefaultSoftware-
Location.

There are three command line parameters to execute different tasks.

Command line parameters:

1. “-c“ (check) Test and, if required, change of the RF settings

2. “-d” (download) Start of the RemoteCodeServer and activation of the status indicator for downloading
the b68 file

3. “-s” (silent) Start of the RemoteCodeServer in “silent mode”, i.e. without the RemoteCodeServer
window. This parameter can only be used in connection with parameter “-d“

4. Without parameters, the RF card will be reconfigured, i.e. the old configuration will be deleted and the
user has to enter the serial number in order to complete the configuration process.

When entering no parameter or parameter “-c“, the program quits after checking or updating the RF configura-
tion. Otherwise the program will continue to run in the background and check if the download of a b68 file has
been started.

For this case the program KBMon.exe is started. It will show the download status of a b68 file, as illustrated
below.

6.4 PC - CMU Connectivity

The wireless connection is established via an RF card, an Ethernet cable is used for the wired connection.

6.4.1 Wireless Configuration

To establish a wireless connection with the CMU, first enter the CMU serial number (found on the back of the
CMU) by means of the configuration program KBConfig.exe (see section 6.3.3 The
RF Setup Program).

The CMU has four LEDs which indicate the operating mode as follows:

• LED 1: Network cable (Ethernet) connected and carrier recognized

• LED 2: Unit programming
• LED 3: Diagnosis
• LED 4: LAN/WLAN transfer

The WLAN PC card of the CMU has, depending on the version, one or two additional LEDs. These LEDs indicate
the connection status and any data transfer.

• PC card with one LED:

- LED flashing slowly: PC connection not active
- LED flashing quickly: PC connection active

• PC card with two LEDs:

- Green LED off: PC connection not active
- Green LED on: PC connection active
- Orange LED off: No data transfer
- Orange LED on: Data transfer

After starting the CMU program and as soon as it is running, the diagnostic LED 3 should go out and the
WLAN card LED 4 illuminate to indicate that it is connected to the PC. The next task of the CMU program is to
automatically assign IP addresses to its network interfaces (DHCP requests). As soon as an IP address has been
assigned, the diagnostic LED 3 will illuminate.

6.5 CMU - User Self Test (UST)

6.5 CMU - User Self Test

The self-diagnosis is a guided test program used to test the unit and to detect faulty components. Only use it
once simple faults have been excluded in earlier tests. It is advised to carry out the self-diagnosis on a regular
basis - even if there are no apparent problems with the system - in order to identify errors before they can impair
productivity.
After starting the self-diagnosis, it is possible to select the complete system test which will check the whole
system for errors. If a certain subsystem is suspected to be faulty, the tests can be limited to the respective
subsystem, e.g. instruments.
During the test the user will be asked to connect different components to NEO. These parts will mostly be
the self-diagnosis adapters which are only used in this context. They should not be utilized for any other
purpose, and only used when asked to do so during the self-diagnosis. Remove all self-diagnosis adapters after
completing the self-diagnosis.

Start the User Self Test program as follows (the program will feature an online help to support the user):

Procedure:

1. Remove all transducers and vehicle cables from the CMU.

2. Ensure the CMU is connected to the PC.

3. Select the self-diagnosis icon on the PC desktop.

4. The self-diagnosis will not start while other test programs are active. In this case notification will be
given and all running test programs must be closed.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Note down all output error codes and their descriptions and contact the Knorr-Bremse technical
hotline

6.6 General Care of Equipment

6.6.1 Cleaning the CMU

Before servicing or cleaning the CMU, make sure it is turned OFF by disconnecting the DC power cable from the
vehicle and/or the AC/DC adapter.

The CMU should only be cleaned with a mild, non-abrasive cleaning agent.

NOTE: Before cleaning, remove dust and other particles by brushing them off gently. Apply the cleaning agent
on to a soft, lint-free cloth and not directly onto the CMU. Do not soak the cloth, make sure the cleaning liquid
does not touch the plugs.

6.6.2 Handling of Cables

Always put cables and transducers back to their safe storage place. The cables have been manufactured accor-
ding to strict quality criteria, but may be damaged if run over by a vehicles or exposed to extreme temperatures.
Do not stretch the cables.

Vehicle Interface cable

CAUTION - Be VERY careful when using these cables as they are able to transmit high
voltages. Short-circuits may cause fire

The unit can be operated with a soft (on-screen) keyboard, which can be activated and deactivated with the
front key -

NOTE: If it is required to access functions which, on a standard keyboard, require the use
of two keys at the same time (e.g. Alt + F4), push these keys one after the other on the
soft keyboard, always pressing special keys like Shift, Alt or Ctrl first.

The soft keyboard supplies key events under Windows®. If applications do not read the entered
keys in a Windows®-compliant way, it cannot be guaranteed that the software keyboard is able
to work with this software.

Upon closing the soft keyboard, the most recent mode (alphabetic or numeric pad) and the
screen position of the soft keyboard are saved and subsequently restored when reopening.

7.10 Battery Self-test

7.10 Battery Self-test

The battery testing program provides the possibility to test the functionality of the battery. This test determines
whether the Li-Ion battery is working properly or whether it is defective and if warranty can be claimed.

The program is a Windows® application and can be started via Start/Programs/Battery Diagnostics.

When starting the test program, the software checks whether the battery is charged to at least 90% of its
capacity. If the battery status is <90%, the user is asked to charge the battery before the program closes.

If the battery status is >90%, the user is asked to

• disconnect the external power supply,
• close all other applications.

NOTE: the test procedure will take up to 1.5 hours and finishes approximately at the 10% marker

8.1 General information

8.1 General information:

• Depending on the version of diagnostics, during the “detection phase” NEO automatically determines
the test steps possible for each system.

• In order to take system-specific or vehicle-specific features into account, NEO will give a number of
instructions or ask questions.

Spec
ial vehicle and system features:

• Depending on the ECU and/or periphery configuration, amongst others, NEO tries to detect an
engine control system. If a system cannot be determined through measurements, NEO will ask the
user whether an engine control unit is present. In order to answer this question correctly, the user
needs to be aware that there are vehicles in which the ABS/ASR ECU does not have any influence
on the engine control system. This means the question whether there is engine control has to be
answered “NO” in this case.

• Vehicles are normaly equipped with one or two warning lamp relays; however, some vehicles have
none. If NEO displays an error that the relay is defective, but no relay is actually fitted, the error can be
ignored.

NOTE: In some vehicles, the relay(s) are integrated into the “info-display” (used instead of ABS/
ASR warning lamps).

• If you want to test the retarder switch-off (if available for this vehicle), you can determine its function
by the relay switching noise during tester control or by turning on the retarder. For some vehicles, the
retarder can only be actuated while the engine is running (> 1000 r/min).

NOTE: If the ignition is switched off other than when instructed to do so, the diagnostic process
stops.

• ABS and ASR switches are not part of the standard equipment. In order to test them, NEO needs to
know whether these switches are installed. Only answer “YES” to the question “Is there an ABS or ASR
switch?” if the switch(es) is/are indeed connected.
