T
he Three Island Challenge, an
annual golf event starting in
October and continuing through
early November, will pit three teams from
Wild Dunes, Seabrook Island and Kiawah
Island against each other in a game called
“Nines.”
Lasting over the course of three
matches, the first round of 18 holes will tee
off at 9 a.m. at Seabrook’s Ocean Winds
Course on Oct. 10. The subsequent two
rounds are played at the Links Course
Wild Dunes on Oct. 23, wrapping up with
Turtle Point at Kiawah on Nov. 7.
Originating in 1991, the Three Island
Challenge was started to create a spirit
of camaraderie and friendly competition
among the three islands.

Sullivan’s Island Mayor’s Message
Dear Island Neighbors,
I am grateful to be able to report what you already know: that
the Island’s loudest wind from slow-moving, indecisive, ill-tempered
Hurricane Florence was the sound of our collective sigh of relief when
we were spared.
Needless to say, no celebrations were in order, given the magnitude
of destruction and displacement suffered by so many of our SC and
NC neighbors farther up the coast and inland. Once these storms are
anywhere near landfall, their tracks are zero-sum situations: to miss
us they have to hit someone else, and vice-versa.
Don’t forget: Wilmington could have been us with a track
change of barely a couple of degrees latitude (north-south): a one-
degree difference in latitude is only 60 nautical miles, roughly 69
of the landlubber miles we are accustomed to. We were less than
two degrees latitude south of the point of landfall. And note that the
distance that matters is direct, as-the-crow-flies distance, not the
more meandering, as-the-car-rolls distance you get on Google Maps,
Waze, etc.
In the aftermath of Florence, there is also long-overdue media and
expert attention to the overemphasis paid to Saffir-Simpson categories,
which are based solely on maximum wind speeds and remain silent
on the geographic spread of a storm, its duration, its storm surge
potential or its rainfall potential. Cat-1 Florence has certainly shown
us that water is much more often the cause of misery.
Also, even just considering winds, (which we should not do),
thinking in categories exaggerates the tiny borders between artificial
distinctions which mask the really wide range of trouble within each
category. Do you really care if you are on the upper limit of a Cat 1
storm (95 mph winds) vs. the lower limit of a Cat 2 storm (96 mph)?
Personally, I’m more worried whether, for example, I will face 74
(bottom of Cat 1) or 95 (top of Cat 1) mph winds, not to mention the
ranges within the higher categories.
Please remember: If you’ve seen one hurricane, you’ve seen, well,
one hurricane. They are as different as snowflakes, just way nastier.
Don’t assume the next hurricane threat will turn out like Florence,
for us or anyone else. The next time, and there WILL be a next time,

I’m sure many of you have already done what you can to provide
aid to the folks who have suffered so much from Florence’s winds,
flooding and other severe post-storm effects. However, if you are still
looking for ways to provide help directly to the storm’s victims, here
are two with local connections:
Donate Supplies: Our Sullivan’s Island Fire Department is
partnering with the Isle of Palms Fire Department to assist North
Carolina residents suffering from Florence. Through Oct. 3 you may
donate supplies such as water, baby needs, building supplies, tarps,
personal hygiene products or even Walmart gift cards. Articles of
clothing are NOT needed.
Items may be dropped at the Sullivan’s Island Fire Station next
to Town Hall, or the Isle of Palms Public Safety Building on JC Long
Blvd.
Those of you who went through Hugo may recall the kindness and
assistance that small rural North Carolina communities gave to the
barrier islands after Hurricane Hugo. This is an opportunity to either
give back or pay forward.
DONATE MONEY TO GO ENTIRELY FOR SC AND NC FLORENCE
RELIEF:
The Lowcountry Mayors’ Disaster Relief Fund has been established,
which will raise money exclusively for Florence-related disaster
assistance via the Coastal Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief

section. You can designate the Mayors’ Fund (all of which, for the
record, goes to SC and NC assistance…not to the Mayors) or to other

of Palms Cleanup Crew sweeps
were so consistent in location,
duration, and interval, they
provide great insight into what’s
happening on the beach during
high season. The sheer number
of cigarette butts and plastics
documented week after week is
startling.”
It’s important to note that Isle
of Palms Cleanup Crew collected
even more trash during its

together at the start of summer
to create Isle of Palms Cleanup
Crew, which operates as an
independent entity with the
support of local businesses and
environmental organizations.
The effort taps into the
community’s growing desire to
keep the beach clean and protect
the health of marine ecosystems,
which have been overwhelmed by
an escalating amount of garbage,
especially plastics. The sweeps
also provide a social component
as volunteers gather after each
sweep at a local restaurant.
“We were blown away by the
response we received from so
many corners, not to mention the
volunteer turnout from week to
week,” Limbach said. “We hope
to continue that momentum
with monthly off-season sweeps,
which we are starting Oct. 8.”

Barrier islands and rising seas
T
he 35 barrier islands that
form a broken chain along
the South Carolina coast
have important responsibilities.
They protect the coastline and
are the front-line guardians of a
vital ribbon of life at the interface
of land and sea. Salt marshes,
essential habitat for marine life,
nestle behind them for protection.
While they are dynamic and fragile,
barrier islands are critical to the
Lowcountry’s economy. Everyone
loves the beach, so we crowd onto
barrier islands to live or just to
have fun on a summer weekend.
Barrier islands are particularly
vulnerable because they are
inherently unstable, low-lying
and surrounded by water. Their
oceanfront edges are constantly
twisted and reshaped by the
relentless forces of waves, tides,
currents and wind. Rising seas
pose an additional threat. As
erosion and increased flooding eat
away at protective sand dunes,
salt water will inundate an island’s
interior, killing vegetation and
contaminating groundwater.
Back-barrier marshes will also
be flooded; some will disappear
and be converted to tidal lagoons

and bays. Behind the islands, the
salinity of estuaries and aquifers
will increase, threatening aquatic
life and water supplies.
In some cases, barrier islands have
shown they can take a punch from
occasional hurricanes and, with
enough time, regenerate naturally
or with beach renourishment.
But the threat from rising seas is
relentless. As the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration
points out, “The ocean takes a very
long time to respond to warmer
conditions at Earth’s surface, so
ocean waters will continue to warm
and sea level will continue to rise
for many centuries at rates equal to
or higher than that of the current
century.”
Since the early 1930s coastal
Louisiana has lost about 2,000
square miles of wetlands due to the
loss of Mississippi River sediment,
subsidence, oil and gas canals,
storms, and sea level rise. Almost
a billion dollars have been spent in
the last 20 years to restore about
75 miles of undeveloped barrier
islands that protect the state’s
coastal wetlands and human
communities. Sand from offshore is
pumped onto the islands and piled
up with earthmoving equipment.
New dunes are stabilized with
fences and planted vegetation.
Continuing this massive effort will
slow but not stop land loss along
the Louisiana coast.
Solutions for developed barrier
islands are more difficult. We can’t
just dump and bulldoze sand on
top of established communities.
Usually the first steps are to
upgrade stormwater and flood
management systems and to
require that new homes be built
higher. Other measures may
include requiring greater setbacks
for new construction in low-lying
areas and elevating roadways
where they cross tidal inlets and
creeks.
Typically structural barriers
are built to keep water out, and
when flooding occurs the water is
pumped back to the sea as quickly
as possible. With expert advice from
the Netherlands, some localities are
employing a new technique called
living with water, that integrates
some floodwater into the landscape
and allows it to recede gradually.
Areas set aside to store the water
can be left natural or aesthetically
landscaped as amenities.

As the built environment and
natural landscape on barrier islands
evolve, well-informed planning is
essential to identify and put in place
the best methods to sustain our
quality of life. Communities should
assess what natural and man
made components of their islands
are most vulnerable to sea level
rise and then prioritize efforts to
address those threats. Cooperation
with neighboring islands would
help address the many challenges
that could overwhelm individual
communities. It’s hard to imagine
now, but in time the only option
remaining for residents of the
islands most at risk will likely be
to leave.

Locals support hurricane relief efforts
IOP AND SI TEAM UP TO COLLECT SUPPLIES
T
he Town of Sullivan’s
Island and the City of Isle
of Palms Fire Departments
are joining forces to assist in
Hurricane Florence recovery
efforts in North Carolina.
Specifically, both Fire
Departments are collecting
supplies such as water, diapers
and wipes, non-perishable foods,
cleaning supplies, new blankets,
and personal hygiene products.
Building supplies and waterproof
tarps are also needed. Don’t feel
like lugging stuff to and fro?
Walmart gift cards are always
welcomed, and easily portable.
“People helped us; now it’s time
to help them,” stated IOP Mayor
Jimmy Carroll. He described
how he attempted to see some of
Florence’s devastation firsthand
on Sunday, September 23,
trying to ride his motorcycle
to Bucksport, SC. “ The water
was still cresting in the Pee Dee
River, the Waccamaw River…the
roads were impassable. We were
spared; we were lucky.”
Carroll went on to explain the
Lowcountry Mayors’ Disaster
Relief Fund, established
through the Coastal Community
Foundation of South Carolina.

the Mayors’ Relief Fund. He
continued, “I also fully support
the two islands’ Fire Departments
in their collection of supplies for
our neighbors up the coast…a
great way to acknowledge support
we got from small North Carolina
communities after Hugo.”

IOP Fire Chief Ann Graham
began collecting relief supplies
with the intention of trucking
them north before she learned
about Operation Airdrop, a local
effort coordinated by retired Air
Force Colonel Julie Grundahl.
“We’ve already sent three large
loads of water, food, diapers
and cleaning supplies since
we teamed up with Operation
Airdrop, volunteer group lead by
retired Col Julie from Air Force
working out of Mount Pleasant
airport,” explains Chief Graham.
Operation Airdrop was
established in response to
Hurricane Harvey and utilizes

local pilots, private planes and
municipal airports.
“They are making contacts
with locals and finding exactly
what they need. Volunteer pilots
are using their airplanes and
delivering it to the exact locations
of need. We are limited by what
we can do with a vehicle right
now,” says Chief Graham, so the
airplanes make it more efficient.
The deadline for donations to
the Fire Departments’ supply
drive is October 3. There are
three drop off sites on IOP: City
Hall, the Public Safety Building,
and the IOP Rec Center. On
Sullivan’s, items may be dropped
off at the Fire Station. At this
time donations of clothing are
not needed.
Monetary contributions to the
Lowcountry Mayors’ Disaster
Relief Fund may be made online at
CoastalCommunityFoundation.
org. You may designate
“Lowcountry Mayors’ Disaster
Relief Fund” in the comments
section to insure your
contribution is directly received
by our neighbors affected by
Florence.
