• High Capacity
- Triple Play: more HD streams
- VoD takes a lot of bandwidth
- VDSL2 needs to be used to its full potential
• Full IP :
- An end-to-end IP Network benefits from one IP Stack
- complete integration with existing and proved IP Stack (IPD)
- Introduction of new technologies in the Access:
- MPLS
- IPv6

•Unidir: Unidirection SFPs are using one fiber per direction, one fiber for upstream, one fiber for upstream, so 2 fibers (see duplex fiber
= connecting 2 fibers)
•Simplex fiber: The SFP has just one fiber interface for both direction (RX/TX), just need one Fiber.
•Duplex fiber: The SFP host one fiber for the transmitter and one fiber for the emitter (=need two fiber to be connected to this SFP).

Unidirectional Bidirectional pluggable
pluggable Optics Optics
Bidirectional SFPs are used to save fiber (for CO fiber management or fiber deployment)
and are usually more expensive
Pluggable Optics Terminology
Single Mode and Multi Mode
• SM fiber: Single Mode, (only a single ray of light in the fiber), no modal dispersion and for this reason has
higher bandwith capacity than MM fiber.
• MM Fiber: Multi Mode (=means allow modal dispersion of the signal), used on shorter distance than SM
