6. Synchronization

68

COPYRIGHT © 2011 ALCATEL-LUCENT. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

What is Synchronization?
Fast networks need timing synchronization:
The smaller the bit period, the more precise the timing mechanism required
Services most vulnerable: voice and video
Originally using TDM systems (E1/T1 or SDH/SONET)

Two main synchronization

mechanisms:
• BITS : out-of-band, dedicated
physical connection
• Synchronous Ethernet : in-
band, using traffic on a uplink

69

Synchronisation Scenarios (1)
In case of Subtending: BITS can be used
• The NANT-D has both a BITS in and out. The BITS out can be used to forward
the clock reference signal further to the subtended ISAMs.
• NANT-A support BITS, but no SynchE

Pluggable Optics Terminology
Bidirectional and Unidirectional pluggable Optics
•Bidir: Bidirectional SFP are using one fiber to send data in both direction, upstream and downstream are differentiate on the same fiber
by the light wave length (see simplex fiber= connecting one fiber).

•Unidir: Unidirection SFPs are using one fiber per direction, one fiber for upstream, one fiber for upstream, so 2 fibers (see duplex fiber
= connecting 2 fibers)

•Simplex fiber: The SFP has just one fiber interface for both direction (RX/TX), just need one Fiber.

•Duplex fiber: The SFP host one fiber for the transmitter and one fiber for the emitter (=need two fiber to be connected to this SFP).

Unidir Bidir

Duplex X
Unidirectional Bidirectional pluggable
pluggable Optics Optics

Duplex Fiber cable Simplex Fiber cable

Bidirectional SFPs are used to save fiber (for CO fiber management or fiber deployment)
and are usually more expensive
Pluggable Optics Terminology
Single Mode and Multi Mode
• SM fiber: Single Mode, (only a single ray of light in the fiber), no modal dispersion and for this reason has
higher bandwith capacity than MM fiber.

• MM Fiber: Multi Mode (=means allow modal dispersion of the signal), used on shorter distance than SM

Single Mode is the standard choice.

MultiMode is used for shorter distance links.
Choice for MM is driven by installed base compatibility reason

Pluggable Optics Terminology
Fiber cable and Fiber connector
• LC connector is the fiber connector applicable for all our Ethernet
pluggable optics, these are common practice for the network side.
• SC connector is the fiber connector applicable for all our GPON pluggable
optics, these are common practice for the Optical Distribution Frame
(ODF).
