Meet the Newest Doctor to Make Minnedosa Home

riving in Minnedosa only
a couple of weeks ago, he
is already feeling very at
home in the valley.
Elgheriani was born
and raised in Libya. At the
age of 17, his family moved
to Burlington, ON for his
grade twelve year of high
school. From there Elgh-
eriani attended medical
school in Dominica, an
island in the West Indies,
for one year. The remain-
ing three years were com-
pleted in Chicago Illinois,
graduating in 2012. Sev-

medicine. Elgheriani also
spent a year at McGill Uni-
versity in Montreal, taking
his masters in experimen-
tal surgery.
When asked what
brought him to Minnedo-
sa, Elgheriani explains,
“my fiancé and I drove
through Minnedosa on a
trip out to Riding Moun-
tain. We drove down Main
Street and then took some
time to walk around a bit
before continuing on to
the park. This was even be-

decided to come back for
another tour of the area.
We toured the hospital and
I learned of the new clinic
being built, this was a huge
attraction to me. Along
with being so close to Rid-
ing Mountain I really felt
this was a good choice for
me.”
Elgheriani has found
himself a home right here
in Minnedosa and his fi-
ronto, will be joining him
around Christmas time.
The couple plans on mak-
ing Minnedosa home and
looks forward to settling
in. “I love this town, every-
one is so nice and friendly.
When I walk down Main
Street everyone smiles and
waves to me, which I’m not
used to really. I’m very ex-
cited for the new clinic to
get up and running, I can’t
wait.”
With Dr. Elgheriani’s
arrival, Minnedosa now
has five doctors with a sixth
expected to begin practic-
ing in the near future.

Rail Safety Week…
September 23rd to 29th was Rail Safety Week in
Manitoba. There are approximately 6,000 kilometres of
railway track in Manitoba and Manitobans are reminded
to exercise caution when it comes to trains and railways.
These are not things to take chances on or play around
with. In North America every year, over 2,000 people are
seriously injured or killed as a result of unsafe behaviour
around tracks and trains. Last year, in Manitoba alone,
there were 15 rail-crossing accidents, two fatalities and
three serious injuries. In addition, there was one fatal-
ity and two serious injuries caused by trespassing on
railways. Some basic rail safety tips to remember at all
times include slowing down and being prepared to stop
your vehicle at every rail crossing, when walking; only
cross the tracks at actual, identified rail crossings (such
as Main Street or 2nd Avenue N.E. in Minnedosa), never
stop your vehicle on the tracks and do not trespass on
railways or rail yards – remember they are private prop-
erty, not public property.
No, not snow…
It was a rude awakening Saturday morning as the
rain turned to sleet and then to dreaded snow. The first
official “snowstorm” hit the area on September 22nd. By
Saturday night, the heavy wet snow caused some prob-
lems for Manitoba Hydro with power outages in numer-
ous areas in southern Manitoba. Some residents in the
Glossop and Bethany areas were out of electricity from
Saturday night until just before noon on Sunday.
First winter wreck…
Saturday’s winter-like weather caused some travel
troubles for some motorists in the area. Local emergen-
cy crews were called out to a single vehicle rollover that
occurred on the bypass, just south of the PR 355 inter-
section. The southbound vehicle lost control, crashed
through the guard rail and came to rest on its roof. Fortu-
nately, the two occupants of the vehicle were reportedly
okay. The first few snowfalls usually result in a few mo-
tor vehicle incidents as driver’s try to re-adjust to winter
driving.

Need For Wetlands

(IBC) report that identifies
a greater need for wetlands
and other natural infrastructure as a cost-effective way
to limit the expensive damage done by floods and ex-
treme weather.
We hope the report -- combined with recent fund-
ing announcements for green infrastructure and ini-
tiatives that reduce the potential impacts of natural
disaster, and the recently-passed Sustainable Water-
sheds Act – will encourage governments, municipali-
ties and conservation groups to pursue new projects
together.
In its report, Combatting Canada’s Rising Flood
Costs: Natural infrastructure is an underutilized op-
tion, released on September 18th, IBC provides a
way to assess the total economic value, benefits and
potential for natural infrastructure such as wetlands.
It concludes that governments and water managers
need to consider these natural alternatives, alongside
concrete and steel solutions, for managing water on
the landscape.

will foster the culture of conservation that continues
to grow in Manitoba.

sustainable, ongoing com-
mitment from members to
see this through.”
The rink board has
dwindled down to only
three remaining volun-
teers over the years. These
members giving ten plus
years of dedication to the
rink. “After ten years, it’s
time for us to move on,”
stated Reynolds. “Our kids
are all getting older and
we are all spread thin with
other commitments.” Vol-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Timothy Anthony Luhowy of Shoal Lake, MB. Tim passed away at
the Hamiota Hospital at 58 years young with his loving family by
his side following a three year battle with cancer. Tim was a loyal
son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was born in Ros-
sburn, MB to parents Tony and Georgina Luhowy.
Tim had a great passion for sports - namely his beloved
Saskatchewan Roughriders. He found great joy as an umpire for
baseball as well as a hockey official. Tim received the Dick Davis
memorial award as Hockey Manitoba’s Most Promising Official
for the 1994-1995 season. He was proud to be selected as part of the
umpire crew to cover the Canada Cup held in Melville, SK. Tim also
enjoyed fishing, camping and bonfire stories with close family and friends.
Tim was employed in the grain business for 37 years from 1980-2017 when health issues
forced him to end his career. Our close-knit circle of friends developed with each station posting.
Tim’s career started in Oyen, AB and then proceeded on to Youngstown, AB, Neilberg, SK, Lem-
berg, SK, and the following Manitoba stations: Basswood, Clanwilliam, Minnedosa, Newdale,
Sandy Lake, and finally Shoal Lake.
Tim married his high school sweetheart, Cory Ledoux, in August 1980 and they were blessed
with three sons, Terryl, Taryn and Ternell. Tim was a self-taught handyman and was proud to
have passed on this trait to his boys. He was a great sport to participate in anything that Cory
dreamt up. Tim loved to play the role of “Santa” and was adored by all who sat on his knee. Tim
had a way to make each child feel very special.
Tim leaves to mourn his wife of 38 years, Cory and their sons: Terryl (Kim), Taryn (Rachel)
and Ternell. Five grandchildren played a very special role in Poppa’s life: Jayden, Kellan, Jaxson,
Linden and Blaire. Our furry and faithful companion, Sassy, brought Tim such great joy. Tim is
also survived by his mother, Georgina Woychyshyn, and her spouse Tony, parents-in-law, Lorne
and Marion Ledoux, sister, Tina (Darryl) and brother, Terry (Susan), brothers-in-law, Cary (Kelly)
and Randy (Sharyl). Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews all played a special part in
Tim’s life.
Tim was predeceased by his father, Tony, in 1987 and grandparents, Sam and Lena Brown
and Anton and Flora Luhowy.
We wish to extend a sincere thank you and our appreciation to the doctors, nurses and sup-
port staff at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, the Hamiota and District Health Centre, Cancer
Care Manitoba and The Palliative Care Team in Hamiota for the excellent care and compassion
that became a part of his journey.
