Activity 1.2.1 Complete the following individually or in a group (as applicable to the specific activity and
the assessment environment):

As directed by the instructor, answer the following:

What is meant by managing diversity in relation to business objectives?

Commented [AK10]:
Business objectives
Some examples of business objectives may include:
Business goals and plans
Future directions statements
Vision or mission statements.
“A more diverse workforce... will increase organisational
effectiveness. It will lift morale, bring greater access to new
segments of the marketplace and enhance productivity. In
short, diversity will be good for business.”

Managing Diversity, 2001, (pp. 34)

mission or objectives statement? Demonstrates a cohesive company approach
Indicates a global diversity inclusion linked to
organisational strategies
Strengthens our global perspective to the company's
business and vision
Forms part of the company strategy
Provides specific reference to diversity, but also

Emphasises diversity and inclusion in all areas of
training and development.
Diversity statement
Many organisations have, as an adjunct to the overall
mission and vision statements, a diversity policy or
statement.
There may be non-specific references, such as:
Diversity stimulates creativity and achievement in all
facets of our organisation’s existence
We, as an organisation, stand for respect, tolerance
and goodwill as the cornerstones for enjoying the
diversity of our business
Organisation ABC, and all of its members, are linked to

Activity 1.3.1 Complete the following individually or in a group (as applicable to the specific activity and Commented [AK12]: Approaches to stakeholders:
We will aim to involve all stakeholders at an early stage
the assessment environment):
to ascertain their particular views on a diversity policy
Stakeholders will be continually consulted throughout
List all the areas where you feel are important when addressing the engagement with the process.
stakeholders. Attitudes to diversity, in a general context, will differ
greatly. In a workplace policy context, it is often difficult to
separate personal views from that of an overriding and legal
application of a diversity policy. For example, individual
stakeholders may have personal views on religion and
beliefs, sexual orientation and gender identity, which exist
independently from the organisation’s own enforcements of
diversity policy.
Your organisational strategy, in addition to gaining input
from stakeholders, is there to ensure that your policy results
in an appropriately fair and equitable diversity statement
with due consideration of the needs of all individuals.
Some stakeholders may come from countries where
diversity as a policy, or even tolerance of certain groups,
does not occur or exist. Stakeholders that are given their
own diversity may have personal experience of
discrimination because of their sexual orientation, gender
identity or religion.
Try to evaluate the opinions from stakeholders into
categories. From there, you can analyse the comments to
the context of the desired objective of the diversity policy
statement.
Understand all the concerns that stakeholders may have
and ensure that they are addressed before the final process.
You need to provide a stakeholder with the following
information.
Inform:
A balanced objective and accurate, consistent
information
Assistance in understanding the objective,
opportunities, legalities, associated issues, alternatives,
and/or solutions associated with diversity policy.
Consult:

You
do not want them to write the policy
You do want to obtain feedback from stakeholders on
views, inclusions, references, any analysis examples
etc.
Stakeholders will need to be consulted in different
ways depending on the issues that have been
identified.

Activity 1.4.1 Complete the following individually or in a group (as applicable to the specific activity and Commented [AK13]: 1.4 – Access diversity policies
the assessment environment): from similar organisations and review for relevance to
own organisation
When using another organisation as a research example in relation to diversity policy, As part of your strategy in addressing stakeholders, the
following notes should be consulted:
what are some of the things that you should consider? Strategy approach:
Needs assessment covering diversity audits,
benchmarks etc.
Development and implementation process
Evaluation of progress.
Your references should include:
Leading best practice case studies
Stakeholders’ requirements and advice
Demonstrated examples of diversity policies
Benchmark examples
Research
Compliance and legislation.

What are some of the benefits of using a similar organisation as a research example? Prior to developing a diversity
policy, access diversity policies from similar organisations.
The benefits of doing this include:
Assisting you in gaining a clear understanding of best
practice in relation to diversity within the industry
The research is not complex and involves looking at
similar industry sectors, competitors or at a sample of
an industry that has diversity information available
Evidence can be varied, including items such as actual
policies or feedback from customers, your various
team members and stakeholders
Your particular research, or obtaining access on other
diversity policies from similar organisations, should
also examine the current legislation to ensure content
and practices are current and compliant.
You should then review these policies for relevance to your
own organisation to ensure that you are meeting the same
guidelines for your region and the current date, as they
apply to the other organisation. Structure and various
applications may alter but the policy and framework should
be the same.
All diversity policy relevance should be specific to the needs
of the organisation and to the employees/stakeholders
within that particular organisation. There may, of course, be
differences in gender balance, age range, cultures, race,
religion, level of language, literacy and numeracy, etc. Each
organisation would normally develop their own diversity
policy based on their circumstances, but the laws and
application of the regulations are common to all. ...

Written Questions
Activity 3.1.1 Complete the following individually or in a group (as applicable to the specific activity and
the assessment environment):

Drawing on examples from your workplace, identify areas of stakeholder consultation that
you can share with the class. They may not be for a diversity example, but another policy
or program development.

Stakeholder consultation involves the development of constructive, productive

relationships over the long term. It results in a relationship of mutual benefit; it
enables us to identify trends and emerging challenges which are currently or will
in the future impact on the organization. Listening to stakeholder concerns and
feedback is a valuable source of information that can be used to improve project
design and outcomes, and help a corporation to identify and control external
risks. It can also form the basis for future collaboration and partnerships.

Consultation enables us to identify and monitor trends, challenges and

perceptions over time with specific groups of stakeholders. It therefore helps us
to:

 Identify and track needs and expectations

 Identify and track perceptions and attitudes
 Provide feedback on specific planned developments
 Evaluate implementations and actions
 Establish the brand values and positioning of the corporation as seen by
others
