2 .1 DESIGN OF COMPONENTS

2.1.1 DESIGN OF DECK SLAB

2.1.1.1 SPECIFICATIONS
❖ The deck slab is proposed to have the following dimensions as shown in the figure.
❖ The deck slab is designed for a clear span of 20m.
❖ The dimensions are thus 20m x 8m x 0.75m
❖ Two lanes each having a width of 4m are considered.
❖ The overall depth of the deck slab in 750mm and a clear cover of 40mm is adopted and
thus the effective depth is 700mm.
❖ Kerb slabs are designed to support the pedestrian pathway , having width of 1.5m on
either side of the deck slab. The depth of kerb slab is assumed as 1.05m
(750mm+300mm).
❖ Both the deck slab and kerb slab are made out of reinforced concrete of grade M40 and
the reinforcement used are of grade Fe 415.

2.1.1.3 LOADING ADOPTED
CLASS ALoading is adopted as per Clause 204.1,Pg 10, IRC 6:2014)

2.1.1.4 Design Calculations :

Step -1 : Design constants
K=σcbc
σcbc + σst/m
m = 280
3σcbc
σcbc = 13.33N/mm2 (Table 9, IRC 21:2000)

σst = 200 N/mm

2
(Table 10, IRC 21:2000)
k= 13.33
13.33 + (200/7)
= 0.318
j = 1-(k/3) = 1-(0.138/3)
= 0.894
Q = 0.5 σcbckj
= 0.5x 13.33x 0.318x 0.894
=1.894
Assume slab thickness = 500mm
Use 25mm diameter bars with clear cover of 40mm

Effective Depth = 500 – (40+12.5) = 450mm

Adopt Bearing width = 400mm
Effective span is the smaller of the following two values
➢ Clear span + effective depth = 20+0.45 = 20.45m

➢ Clear span + bearing width = 20+ 0.4 = 20.4m

Thus, the effective span = 20.4m

STEP -2 : Dead load BM & SF

1.Dead load of slab=1×1× 0.5 × 25 =12.5KN
2.Dead load of wearing coat = 1×1×0.08 ×22=1.76KN
Total load = 14.26 KN
Dead load BM = wl2/8 = 14.26×20.42
8

=741 KNm
Dead load SF = wl/2 = 14.26×20.45
2
= 145.8 KN
STEP-3 : Live load BM & SF
Class A train of vehicles is taken into consideration.The maximum axle loads of 11.4 tonnes are
taken into consideration so as to produce the maximum bending moment

Effective width of dispersion parallel to span

Effective width = B+2 (effective depth +thickness of wearing coat )

= 250 + (450 +80)
= 1310mm
Impact Factor = A

B+L
= 4.5 / (6+20.4)
= 0.170
For 2 wheels = ( 1.31 /2 ) + 1.2 + (1.31 /2 )
= 2.51m
Effective width of dispersion perpendicular to span

As per IRC21:2000, clause 305.16.2,

beff = kX (1- X/L )+bw

L = 20.4m
bw= 0.5 +2 (0.08) =0.66m
b/L= (8/20.4)=0.39
From IRC 21:2000, the value of k was found to be 1.412

beff = 1.412×9.6(1- 9.6/20.4)+0.66

=7.83m

Allowing for overlaps, the effective width of dispersion is obtained as 11.115m. Since, this value
is more than the width of deck, the effective width of dispersion perpendicular to span is limited
to 11.0m
2×114×1.170
Intensity of loading including impact per meter width = = 9.68kN/m2
11×2.51

2.51 2.51
Maximum bending moment at midspan= (9.68× ×10.2)-(9.68×2.51× )
2 2 4

= 116.29kN/m2

Design BM=Dead load BM + Live load BM

=741+116.29

=857.29kNm
STEP 4: Design of slab
Use M40 concrete grade and Fe415 bars

𝑀
Effective depth, d=√𝑄𝑏

857.29×1000000
=√( )
1.894×1000

=672.78mm

Take d=700mm

D=700+50=750mm

Take clear cover as 50mm

Area of longitudinal reinforcement:

Ast= M/ (σst*j*d)
857.29×1000000
Ast=
200×0.894×700
=6849mm2

Take 25mm diameter bars

𝜋
×25×25
4
Spacing= ×10000
0.849

=71.67≈70mm

6849
Number of bars=𝜋 =14 bars
×25×25
4

𝜋
Actual area of steel=14× ×252
4

=6872mm2

Thus , provide 25mm bars at 70mm c/c spacing.

Area of distribution reinforcement:

Bending moment for distribution per meter width=0.3M l×0.2Md

Where, Ml=live load moment

Md=dead load moment

=(0.3×116.29)+(0.2×741)

=183.08kNm

Using 16mm diameter bars,the depth to center of bars=700-10-8

=682mm

183.08×1000000
Area of steel=
200×0.894×682

=1501.37mm2

Use 16mm dia bars,

𝜋
×16×16
4
Spacing= ×1000=130mm
1501.37

No of bars =Ast/ ast

1501.37
=𝜋
×16×16
4

= 8bars
𝜋
Actual ast=8× 4 ×162=1608mm2

Thus, provide 16mm dia bars at 130mm c/c spacing.
