Introduction
With improvements to the combustion system and the air system, the 3126 MUI engine meets the
IMO emissions regulations. The combustion system uses a new injector for more efficient
combustion. A new turbocharger is used for the 420 hp rating. Injection timing is also optimized for
the new rating to lower acceleration smoke.

stresses of the cylinder head firing are
transmitted to the heaviest portion of the block
by directly tensioned bolts.

Crankshaft and Bearings

The regrindable crankshaft is a steel forging
with induction hardened journals and fillets.
The improved shape of the crankshaft provides
superior balance. The dynamic balance of the
eight counterweights minimizes vibrations.
The improved balance and increased stiffness
of the crankshaft add strength and durability.
The main bearings are steel-backed aluminum
and provide a large surface that reduces the
stress and load across the engine. The front
crankshaft drive gear is a tapered friction press
fit retained by four crank pulley bolts. This
design provides more precise timing and easier
serviceability.

piston has an annular chamber cast into the
skirt under the crown into which oil is sprayed. Gear Train
This design significantly reduces ring belt The gear train, located on the front of the
temperature and oil carbonization behind the engine, drives the camshaft, water pump, oil
rings. An oil cooling chamber is formed by the pump, auxiliary sea water pump, and accessory
lip cast at the top of the skirt and the cavity drive. A stiffer cam idler gear is employed for
behind the ring grooves in the crown. Cooling high horsepower PTO drives as well as reduced
jet oil enters the chamber through an opening noise. The gear train provides capacity for up to

the crown and skirt.
The articulated design allows the use of steel in
highly loaded portions of the piston. The steel
crown has much greater structural capability
than an aluminum piston. This advantage is
especially pronounced at high temperatures
occurring at the piston crater rim. Three rings
are located in the grooves in the steel crown of
the piston. The two top rings are designed to
reduce oil consumption and improve emissions.
The bottom oil control ring has a spring
expander and is double railed and profile
ground. Holes drilled from the bottom oil
control ring groove to the interior of the piston
drain excess oil from the ring.
