There is a spring loaded gun pointing vertically in the air.

If the spring in the gun

is compressed a distance of 0.147 m, the gun can launch a 25.4g projectile from
rest to a maximum height of 24.0 m above the starting point of the projectile.
Assume all resistive forces are negligible.

a) What is the velocity of the projectile as it leaves the gun?

b) What is the flight time of the projectile from the gun back to the same
position?

c) Calculate the Elastic Potential energy stored in the spring.

d) State the Kinetic energy of the projectile on release.

e) What is the force constant of the spring?

The gun is now fired horizontally at a piece of plasticine (50g) hanging from a
wire. The projectile travels into the plasticine 2cm. The plasticine then swings
upwards.

f) How much work is done on the bullet to stop it inside the plasticine?

g) How high does the plasticine move upwards?

h) Why will the pendulum not get to this height?

rest to a maximum height of 24.0 m above the starting point of the projectile.
Assume all resistive forces are negligible.

a) What is the velocity of the projectile as it leaves the gun?

v2 = u2 + 2as

u = √(2 x 9.81 x 24)

u = 21.7 ms-1

b) What is the flight time of the projectile from the gun back to the same
position?

s = (½ u+v) x t

t = 2s/(u+v)

t = (2x 24.0) / (21.7)

t = 2.21

2 x t = full flight = 4.42s

c) Calculate the Elastic Potential energy stored in the spring.

EPE = mgh = 0.0254 x 9.81 x 24.0 = 5.9802 J

d) State the Kinetic energy of the projectile on release.

5.9802J

e) What is the force constant of the spring?

mgh = ½ mv2 = Elastic E

0.0254 x 9.81 x 25.4 = ½ kx2

k = √(2x0.0254 x 9.81 x 25.4)/0.1472

k = 23.52 Nm-1
