1 Basic Principle
Coagulometer is based on principle of phototurbidometry to test blood
clotting time, which is physically a process of formation of insoluble fibrin. The
quantity of insoluble fibrin increases rapidly in a very short time and light
transmission in blood decreases sharply (turbidity increases).
Blood clotting causes a progressive increase in turbidity. Based on this
principle, the instrument enables operator to test clotting time with sensitive
detection device.

2 Operational Environment
Normal operational environment requires:
-- Ambient Temperature: 10℃-30℃
-- Relative Humidity: 30%-70%
-- Air Pressure: 860hPa-1060hPa
-- Power Supply: Stabilized voltage supply
-- 110V/220V ±10%, 50Hz/60Hz ±1Hz
--Avoid intense electromagnetic interference, mechanical vibrations, corrosive
gases and direct exposure to bright sunlight.
-- Reliable ground connection

3 Warnings & Precautions

-- Do not expose the instrument to bright light.
-- Use separate stabilized voltage supply to ensure stable voltage.
-- Always incubate the reagents and plasmas before use.
-- When performing tests, make sure that a magnetic bar is put into the blood
cup.
-- When adding samples, add plasma first then add reagent during FIB test;
add reagent first then plasma in other tests.
-- Add samples rapidly and evenly along wall of tube to prevent bubbles.
-- Make sure to use aqua.
-- Always make sure to add proper amount of reagent and do not increase or
reduce reagent amount arbitrarily.
-- Always make sure that there are no objects above the channels when
performing tests.
-- Avoid vibration during testing. Failure to do so may affect test results.
-- Do not move blood cups during timing or incubating period.
-- Always make sure that there are no opaque objects in testing channels.
-- Do not switch on and off the instrument frequently.
-- Do not open the instrument without any professional assistance.

6 Replacements

6.1 Printer Replacement

MG 02 17/08/2009 CA-01/02 Coagulometer Page 6 of 10

Use the following steps to replace printer when it is necessary:
-- Switch off the instrument before opening its upper cover.
-- Unplug the power cord and data cable of the printer.
-- Unscrew the screws that secure the printer.
-- Remove the broken printer.
-- Replace it with a new one.
-- Connect power cord and data cable.
-- Secure the printer on the cover.

6.2 Fuse Replacement

The instrument is designed with two fuses. One is under the power switch;
the other is a rotary type fuse. Use the following steps to replace blown fuses:
-- Turn off the power switch.
-- Use a slotted screwdriver or a similar tool to remove the blown fuse under
power switch.
-- Replace with a new fuse of the same specifications.
-- Use your hands to remove the rotary type fuse for replacement.
-- Close fuse box lid and restart the instrument.
Note: Always use a specified fuse.

7 Troubleshooting

-- The instrument does not work

Cause: Blown fuse or poor contact of power interface at the back of the
instrument.
Solution: Replace the fuse and inspect the interface.
Note: There are 2 fuses. One is located under power switch; the other is a
rotary type fuse.

-- Display clarity change

Cause: Voltages in the display may vary due to different AC voltages in
different places. However, the display is still within visual range.
Solution: Open the instruments to locate the connecting wire that connects
main board and the display. Adjust the blue 203 potentiometer to change
display clarity.
Note: Avoid touching other components when performing the above steps.
-- Printer doesn’t stop printing
Cause: The wire that connects printing head and control panel is becoming
loose.
Solution: Open the cover, remove printing head and compress the white wire
that connects printer head and control panel.

MG 02 17/08/2009 CA-01/02 Coagulometer Page 7 of 10

Note: Do not pull the white wire connected to printer head so hard.

-- Longer time to warm up

Cause:
a. It is influenced by different ambient temperatures (especially in winter).
b. It also takes longer time to warm up when voltage is insufficient.
Solution:
a. Increase inside ambient temperature to 10℃~30℃.
b. Open the cover and use a digital multi-meter to test voltage of heating rod
in the incubator. If the voltage is not 220V, replace CT2 (capacitor) next to a
relay in the main board or replace the main board.

-- The instrument can’t be warmed up

Cause: Open circuit in heating rod or a broken relay on main board.
Solution: If no clicking sound of relay on/off is heard with power switch on/off,
the relay is not working. Replace the relay or replace the entire main board. If
a clicking sound is heard and voltage is detected on heating rod but rod isn’t
heated, the heating rod is out of order. Replace heating rod.

-- Longer test time

Cause: Insufficient incubating time for plasmas and reagents, or the instrument
needs to be recalibrated.
Solution: Troubleshooting: Make sure that plasmas and reagents are incubated for
no less than 3 min. (5 min. in winter), or refer to User’s Manual for calibration.

-- Coagulometer stops test before reagent begins to clot

Causes normally are listed as:
a. Improperly arranged cuvette or cuvette of wrong size.
b. Bubbles are formed when adding samples.
c. Oversized magnetic bar or magnetic bar of wrong materials may interfere
with optical paths.
d. Bright light like sunlight may interfere with detecting environment.
e. Incorrect amount of reagents.
Solution:
a. Replace with a right cuvette.
b. Add samples evenly along wall of tube to prevent bubbles.
c. Choose a proper magnetic bar.
d. Add a light blocking unit to avoid bright light interference.
e. Add proper amount of reagents.

If malfunctions still can’t be solved with the above steps, perform the
following checks:
a. Open instrument cover, loosen screws that secure the lamp and check if
the lamp is still on.

MG 02 17/08/2009 CA-01/02 Coagulometer Page 8 of 10

b. If the lamp doesn’t work, replace with a new one.
c. If the lamp is on, remove it from detecting channel and check if there is
any change in its brightness (The check should be done as quickly as
possible.).
d. If there is no change in brightness, replace the faulty receiver pipe.
e. If the brightness changes, replace the faulty test board.
f. Adjust the locator on test board: put a magnetic bar into a blood cup and
add in 200uL distilled water. Then press and hold RESET key to enable the
magnetic bar to spin. There are 2 ways of adjusting revolution: Test motor
voltage of M1-M2 with a digital multi-meter and set potentiometer W2 between
1.0-1.2V; visually measure revolution of magnetic bar and make sure it rotates
at 2 revolutions per second.

-- Endless test and no results

Causes normally are listed as:
a. No magnetic bar in blood cup.
b. Magnetic bar doesn’t work or doesn’t spin.
c. Strong light from outside.
d. Plasma or reagents are not collected, dissolved or added in a proper way.
Solution: Troubleshoot possible malfunctions one by one.

If the malfunctions still can’t be solved with the above steps, do the following
checks:
a. Open the cover, loosen screws that secure the lamp and check if the lamp
is still on.
b. If the lamp doesn’t work, replace with a new one.
c. If the lamp is on, remove it from detecting channel and check if there is
any change in brightness (The check should be done as quickly as possible).
d. If there is no change in brightness, replace the faulty receiver pipe.
e. If the brightness changes, replace the faulty test board.

-- Endless incubation and timing

Cause: Check if the program is set as “0”sec.
Solution: Reset program for the tested item.

-- Incubation stops, but no prompt sound for adding reagent is heard or

the system is halted.
Cause: Loose or faulty test board
Solution: Open the cover, remove test board from main board and hook it up
again. If the trouble still exists, replace test board.
