GUIDELINES/ PROCEDURE FOR OPGW ROUTE SITE SURVEY

1. The OPGW survey activity actually starts with collecting Tower Schedule - covering all the
sections required to be surveyed, from the client.
2. Minimization of requirement of underground or Aerial FO cable by suggesting suitable
transmission line for connectivity to stations/ control centre.
3. After obtaining the Tower Schedule the contractor will deploy the teams involving a
Surveyors, Fitters and Site Engineer cum Supervisors.
4. The Site Engineer/ project Manager of Package Contractor will have to coordinate with the
concerned site office in arranging the PTW (permission to work) on daily basis for surveying
the tower line along with the team.
5. The Surveying will start measuring the parameters like Tower height, Tower type, Horizontal
deviation angle, Span length, condition of earth wire, ground elevation from tower peak, sag,
missing tower parts & earth wire, and checking the suitability of OPGW live line installation.
Proper recording of these details shall be included in the survey report.
6. Suitability of tower peak for installation of OPGW cable to be checked.
7. The surveying team will use the following items/ equipments to survey the tower lines viz.,
1) Telescope, 2) GPS, 3) Compass, 4) Theodolite/ total station/ Distancometer and 5)
Measuring tape, etc.
8. Data of GPS is recorded and fed to PLS CADD Software to provide the Span Length and
Horizontal Angle between two towers.
9. The Survey will also include determining the routing and measuring the length of approach
cable from gantry tower to equipment/ FODP location. Further identifying the availability of
new trench/ cable raceways. Proper layout of Approach Cable routing shall be prepared
along with measured length.
10. Identifying the type and position of FODP at each location by coordinating with the Client.
11. Contractor team will prepare the survey report mentioning all the above parameters and
also recording the availability of earth wire, missing members,, major crossings like road,
railway, river, etc., and the terrain conditions.
12. After the clearance of the survey report the contractor will submit the drum schedule to the
Client for the approval. The drum schedule should contain the exact cable length for each
section and the quantity of hardware fittings required mainly marking the Towers, where
Joint Box to be fixed. Route markings for Approach & Underground cables and FODP
locations for terminating the fibre.
13. Details of longer span more than 600m & involving river crossing etc. i.e., max. sag, design
tension for river crossing towers (anchor towers) shall also to be included along with the
survey report. Further temperature at the time of measurement of sag of river crossing
section during survey may also be included.
14. A proper Sketch of the LILO lines as point of crossing lines to LILO substation covered under
the project shall be prepared and submitted alongwith survey report.
