a) Interracial relationship – encyclopedia.

com defines this as relationship between people

who comes from two different cultural backgrounds. In the video My New Life as an
Indian Wife, it is obvious that the couple love each other without labels. One adapts to the
other because at the end of the day race does not matter. We are all people, equal, created
to be in this world to love and care for each other. One is an English and the other is an
India, but it is evident that both couples are happy with each other and they have no
regret with their decisions. They feel comfortable with each other. We are all aware that
England colonized India, but the couple is a living proof that love is stronger than race.
Race is a facticity but despite that, it is the relationship that counts. Same with the video
Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race, the couple there lives a balanced life, they
respect each other’s race and at the same time clinging to it and being true to it, which is
Indian.

b) Adaptability – Dictionary.com defines this able to adjust oneself readily to different

conditions. This can be seen in the video My New Life as an Indian Wife where Lauren,
the English lady, lives a life of a traditional Indian wife, where she wears Indian clothes,
follow their beliefs, and act as an Indian. She admitted that it was hard for her at first, but
she learned to know the Indian ways and embraced it with open arms. Similarly, with the
video Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race, Harry Koh was Chinese by birth but
favors the Indian culture more because of his upbringing where he was able to set his
mind to the Indian culture. He was more introduced with the Indian culture that he acts as
an Indian. He was closer to Indians, having Indian foster parents, wife, and friends.

c) Cultural Preservation – We all know that India had also been under a colony a long
time ago, under the British Rule but they have managed to stay true to their traditions,
culture, and beliefs. This is evident in the both videos My New Life as an Indian Wife and
Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race because there are still their temples, practices,
food, body garments, etc. India has still a strong culture going despite being under a
colony.

d) Diversity – The couple in the videos Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race and My
New Life as an Indian Wife is an example of race living diversely. Diversity as defined by
Merriam-Webster Dictionary as the condition of having or being composed of differing
elements; variety; especially the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of
different races or cultures). Of course, when India was still under the British Empire, the
white-skinned people were seen superior but nowadays, white people can live
harmoniously with the Indians. The couples may be different in their races and cultures,
but they live as one and equal individuals. They blend well with each other.
e) Equality in society – touching on this topic is very nice because we are all
fundamentally equal but unique in some ways. We aim to live peacefully and balanced. A
video that I have watched in Facebook from the user Lina Bikiche – Officiel shows an
experiment done in various people where their x-rays where seen to the public. And I
think that that is a very well representation that all of us human beings are equal inside,
we are all made up of the same things, so there is no reason to see one as superior or
inferior to the other, the only problem is judgments. The couple in the video is a great
example of this because their culture is not a barrier to their love.

f) Language – The video My New Life as an Indian Wife, shows how Lauren and her
mother-in-law have a hard time communicating with each other. When the British
colonized India they brought their language with them but not all Indians were educated
because the learning of the English language in India at that time was not a necessity.
This shows that even a country had been colonized by another does not necessarily mean
that they possess the language of the colonizers. But despite having language as a barrier
between Lauren and her mother-in-law, they try their best to understand each other which
is more important, because if there’s the will, there’s a way. The video Chinese by birth,
Indian by adopted race shows otherwise because Harry Kho despite his being a Chinese
is more fascinated with Tamil the language of his adapted culture. He enjoys it so much
that he took the time to learn it and benefited him in understanding his setting and
environment.

g) Love and Acceptance – Love brings us together, it opposes racism, discrimination, and
prejudices. India was once inferior to England but for me the couple depicts the other
way around but in a positive way. In the video My New Life as an Indian wife, Lauren,
the English lady, accepted her husband’s culture because she knew that he was the one
and she left everything from her former culture in England. She knew that Abhiram was
truthful and loyal to her. She became comfortable with him which resulted to her
adapting to the Indian culture. She loved and accepted. Same with Harry Kho and his
wife in the video Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race, Harry’s wife did not base his
loved one by his race but by who he is and learned to love him.

h) Patriotism – As defined by Merriam-Webster, patriotism is love for or devotion to one's

country. This is very evident to both videos My New Life as an Indian Wife and Chines
by birth, Indian by adopted race because both promotes India and its culture. India is a
third world country which was an effect of its having been colonized by the British but
despite that its citizens manage to stay true to their culture even other races fall in love
with it. Lauren from the first video, promotes her Indian Culture by practicing their
beliefs and traditions, Harry Kho from the second video is patriotic because he manages
to learn the Indian language.
i) Stereotype – Dictionary.com defines this as a simplified and standardized conception or
image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group.
Although in the videos My New Life as an Indian Wife and Chinese by birth, Indian by
adopted race, this was not done, I think that it is appropriate to add it because when we
see a white-skinned woman speaking English with a British accent, we always think that
she is superior that she is rich or have some authority; or when we see someone from the
Yellow Race, we always say that he speaks Chinese. In the videos, stereotyping is being
diminished because we do not define people based on their appearances or the language
they speak; rather, we should know who they are, their principles in life, and what they
believe in. We must respect each other.

j) Freedom – Humanity has come a long way to enjoy the freedom we have today. We
have improved through time. Countries which had once been under the rule of a more
powerful country are rising on their own, enriching their culture, and improving the
conditions of life. Freedom comes in many form: freedom to choose, freedom to express
oneself, etc. Freedom is very evident in the videos, for example in My New Life as an
Indian Wife, Lauren left her career in the UK to be in India and be with her loved one and
Harry Kho in Chinese by birth, Indian by adopted race, decided to mature as an Indian
and considers himself as one. You see, we have the freedom to choose who we want to
be, and we know that we decided well if we are happy with our decision.

k) Communication – Communication has evolved through time. In the video My New Life
as an Indian Woman, it was the technological advancement, the internet that have
brought Lauren and her husband together. A connection brought them together allowing
them to interact with one another even though they are far away from each other.
Distance is just a number of measurements, it is the truthfulness, will, trust, and loyalty
that matter.

l) Reasonable Accommodation – This is the acceptance of one’s ethnicity within a society

that allows an individual to express or perform his/her religious or cultural beliefs,
values, and traditions in his/her everyday life. In both videos, My New Life as an Indian
Wife and Chines by birth, Indian by adopted race, both Harry Kho and Lauren accepted
the foreign culture which later on they also became part of the culture that was once new
to them.

m) Multiculturism – this involves ideologies and policies that give equal respect to one’s
ethnicity whether it is based on their religion, culture, language or geological aspect of
living. Colonialism might have degraded one culture but after which, people have had
treatise and agreements to respect each culture. People, nowadays, have learned to
appreciate each other’s culture. Our differences should not divide us; rather, should
complement us. It is evident in the videos that the different races maybe Chinese, Indian,
or British learned to accept and found the beauty of cultures which led them to be part of.

n) Comparison – We now move on to the video Surpassing Limitations: Tanzila Khan at

TEDxKinnaird. Comparison is one of the things that drag us down because we spend so
much time complaining that why can’t we do certain things which others can. But the
truth is we are unique in some ways. Tanzila Khan said that she had a dream doing this or
doing that, but she thought to herself that she can do something else which is of her
passion and can benefit a lot of people. This is very evident in society today, people set
their minds that they cannot do certain things while in fact they can, they are just being
controlled or limited by society. Some Postcolonial effects results from this because the
country who once colonized still has an effect to the country they colonized, and they
sometimes try to limit that country if they see them as a threat. Nevertheless, we still try
to believe and act that we can do things.

o) Self-Limitations – Tanzila Khan said that her disabilities became her greatest obstacle
in life because it limits her to do things that she wants to do. Society in particular,
sometimes become cruel to people with disabilities because we think that they are not
able to do things normal people can. Tanzila said that as long as we know how to turn our
obstacles to inspirations we are able to do things which we desire, and we can make use
of them not as things which pulls us down but as assets that help us inspire others in the
society to do things; to encourage.

p) Self-Confidence – Most people lack this today because of their fear of failure and the
judgment that they will receive from society. But as Tanzila Khan puts it into her words,
we need to trust ourselves and help ourselves to pursue our dreams and goals. She for
example made her way to inspiring people because she had the will and strength to face
society.

q) Activism – Merriam-Webster defines this as a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct

vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue.
Tanzila Khan speaks about this because she was trying to stop the discrimination in her
country of people who have disabilities. After colonizers left the countries they ruled, the
next problem to solve was to fix the homeland’s society and way of treating its citizens.
The colonizers did not just bring their culture or language but also their ideologies which
was adapted by some countries resulting to some negative ways. But the people have the
power to speak out for themselves that is why there are talks of peace in the world.
r) Inspiration and Motivation – One of the most important things in life is the inspiring
and motivating not only one selves but others. I think that this is what sparked nations in
the past like ours to pursue for freedom and have rights. Tanzila Khan was an inspiration
and motivation to many people in her country because she encourages the people to fight
for what is right and to make themselves confident in everything that they do. Her
stepping to that stage was a sign of inspiration and motivation to the people.

s) Discrimination and Rejection – We live in a world where words and actions kill and
destroy dreams and trample on people. I think that part of the postcolonial effect is this
because we have the mentality that having money, fair-skin color, and authority in
society enables us to judge and control people. But that is not we should be thinking and
doing. Discrimination and rejection in society should be eradicated because it is the very
root of chaos and misunderstanding in society. Tanzila Khan talks about this matter. She
said that even when she was in school, the faculty judged her because of her condition.
She has been rejected in doing activities which is of her passions. She said that she was
not able to do the things she like because of people saying that she can’t do this or that.
But she proved them wrong, she expressed herself through the arts, she made use of her
hands. She might be disabled but that did not stop her to make her thoughts known to the
world. The rejections and discriminations that she had received might have hurt but they
also served as an inspiration. She was able to do things more than normal people can. She
wrote books, she fought for rights, she empowered women and the underprivileged, and
she did what she believed was right.

t) Women Empowerment – Postcolonialism made way for women empowerment because

in most of the colonizers, man is always viewed as the one dominant in society and
woman is the one who stays at home and do the house works. We are always fed up with
the phrase WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS NOTHING, but nowadays that phrase
has been changed to WOMAN, WITHOUT HER, MAN IS NOTHING. In society, we
are fighting for equality that man and woman should be treated equal and that has come a
long way ever since. Tanzila Khan in her speech said that this was something she have
worked to fight for in her country. Pakistan is a country where man is very powerful, and
women were less valued that is why Tanzila Khan worked hard for this because she saw
and experienced how women are being treated less.
