As Autumn arrives, life begins

to slow down a little but not be-
fore a flurry of activity getting
gardens tidied up and patio
furniture stored away until next
year. Spare a thought for any
wandering cats while you are
closing shed and garage doors
as it is easy for them to become trapped.
This time of year usually brings sunshine
and showers, blustery days blowing the
leaves off the trees and a slight nip in the air.
There are still plenty of days to be enjoyed
outside so make the most of them with your
furry friends - it has been such a good sum-
mer that the winter may well pay us back big
time. As usual, we will have plenty of advice
over the coming months for keeping kitties
safe indoors and out.
Safety is a luxury some of our big cats,
from whom our fab felines descend, are not
easily afforded, with an increase in trading for
body parts, loss of natural habitat and illegal
poaching. We have some interesting articles
about conservation this month plus an in-
sight into a challenging mountain trek from
someone who will be taking part dressed as
a lion - yes really! Let’s roar in support of cats
everywhere, big and small…long may they
continue to give us joy and friendship. 12 36

Case in point
Nicole Stevens, from Hitchin, Hert-

she woke up to discover that Kara had

South Africa has been selling lion
bones to Asia for the past few years,
sourced from both wild and captive
lions, and the country now dominates
the lion bone market. According to the
CITES database, South Africa sold over
2000 complete lion skeletons to Laos
between 2009 and 2015. This excludes
the 2300 bones and 40 skulls sold
separately as ‘incomplete skeletons’.
In 2016, conservationists called for
a total ban on the exports of African
lions but this was rejected by South

made by South Africa was that it would

stop the exporting of body parts from
wild African lions and instead set an-
nual quotas for the number of captive-
bred lions they would export. South Af-
rican lions are listed under Appendix
II which means that their products can
be traded internationally but only if the
trade is not detrimental to the survival
of the species in the wild.
According to the Department of En-
vironmental Affairs, the sale of captive-
bred lions will reduce the demand for
wild lion parts from a growing market
for exotic products such as tiger bone
wine. The worry is that if the supply
from captive breeding facilities is re-
stricted further, then dealers may seek
alternative sources, either through ille-
gal access to stock piles or by poach-
ing both captive-bred and wild lions.

According to the EIA, a new global
commitment is needed to save all big
cats that are threatened by trade in
their body parts. Debbie Banks says:
“This has to start with a declaration
of zero tolerance from presidents and
prime ministers, primarily of big cat

LOVED ONES BE THE
HOME FOR WORMS.

EXPERTS RECOMMEND THAT CATS ARE

DEWORMED AT LEAST EVERY 3 MONTHS.1
Cats can easily get worms through any contact with their surroundings.
Tiny ingested eggs can turn into harmful worms in as little as 30 days.2 Experts recommend
that cats are dewormed at least every 3 months.1 Ask your vet about personalised worming
