Abstract.
A biomaterial is a material designed to intact with the biological systems of living beings, which replace or
strengthen the function of living tissues or living organs. A very clear example of the application of
biomaterials, which it presents in the current text, artificial heart valves, biological structures very essential
for a normal and satisfactory functioning of the circulatory system, one of the most important biological
systems in humans. The replacement of these is of vital importance, since the failure of them is detrimental
to the health of the human being that can lead to death. Their finding and study of materials that might replace
them, it has done for a long time, because it has been a cause of death in most of the adult population, valve
failures or valvulopathies. Finding a biomaterial is something complex and more when it has to be in constant
contact with the blood fluid, a dynamic liquid at any time, which has special characteristics that make it
unpredictable, it is very difficult to modulate. Therefore, the biocompatibility is an important role when
choosing a material for the heart valves and another type of percutaneous implant. However, thanks to
engineering, the discovery of materials with special properties achieved, but it was due to a long study based
on the science of biomaterials. Pyrolytic carbon, a biomaterial highly compatible with blood and almost with
complete properties respect to the functioning of a real heart valve. This biomaterial currently applied in the
new models of artificial valves such as the coating and the elaboration of the structures, since their properties
imply a great advantage in the application as a great durability of 20 to 40 years, after their implantation. In
addition, the more importantly, a low level of thrombogenesis that decreases the chances of heart attacks and
stroke, by decreasing the generation of thrombi or emboli.
