Wireless Antenna Types
There are three types of antenna performance for
wireless field devices
– Extended Range: up to 2600 feet (800 m)*
– Long Range: up to 750 feet (228 m)*
– THUM: up to 328 feet (100 m)*
– THUM: up to 750 feet (228 m) still in testing

Network Design Assumptions
 Most THUM applications
are stranded diagnostics
 Therefore:
– Process unit organization
exists
– Instruments exist
– Instrument drawings exist
– Data processes exist
– Work processes exist

Large process facilities are organized into process units

separated by roads. Each process unit has existing
instruments with existing data processes and work
process. Each process unit should have a unique wireless
field network

[FileEmerson

network design simple and reliable
27-Jun-01, Slide 24
Network Design Recommendations: Scoping
 Scope Network to Single
Process Unit
– Every unique network in
the process unit and the
process facility should
have unique Network ID
and Join Keys.
– Multiple unique networks
can exist in the same
process unit.

25
27-Jun-01, Slide 25
Network Design Recommendations: Designing
 THUM Exception for Design
– Maximum Range is 328 feet (100 m)
– The THUM should be installed “THUMs UP” and mounted 6
feet (1.7 m) above major obstacles and surfaces.
• This really only applies to tank farm applications and when trying to
achieve maximum range
Treat the THUM just like other wireless devices when
in high and medium density process units

Wireless Symbols
Wireless Symbols only need to be indicated on Loop
Drawings where the technology is important
– Indicate wireless instruments on Instrument Location Plans
like any transmitter
Use unique symbols for instruments unique to
wireless

data along with 2 bursts from the sub-device. From
the factory the THUM will be set up to burst command
3 and 48 of the sub-device. These two commands will
give you PV, SV, TV, QV and all the status
information. Users will be able to go in and change
those commands through a method in either AMS or
