5With the proliferation of airbags and device-enhanced interiors, drivers feel a greater
sense of invulnerability in newer cars. Armed with this, they will take more risks on the
road. Current American consumers demand an even greater illusion of individual
autonomy from their major purchases than in the past –e.g. all of those gated
communities, monster SUVs on freeways and low taxes. And yet, with this heightened
10sense of personal autonomy come feelings of isolation, anonymity and misanthropy, and
thus a more unforgiving nature while driving.

Sadly the only communal experiences available to many Americans nowadays take
place either at the mall, on the Internet or the freeway. The freeway is peculiar in that
while it is a public space, everyone on it is isolated.

15It seems that nearly every day, somewhere in Germany, there is a multi-car catastrophe
that closes a section of autobahn for several hours. A typical example happened the
other day just outside of Stuttgart, the city, incidentally, where both Porsche and
Mercedes are based. In dense fog during the morning rush, 39 cars piled up after one of
them hit a dog.

20Having now driven regularly on the autobahn, I have concluded that there is no greater
malevolent influence on the average motorist in Germany than Formula One racing.
Formula One is a popular spectator sport. There are times when I believe that everyone
driving here aspires to be Michael Schumacher.

1. Translate the following text into Spanish (2.5 points).

When we began our design, the Coldspot unit was ugly. It was an ill-proportioned
vertical shoebox “decorated” with a maze of moldings, panels, etc., and the latch was a
35pitiful piece of cheap hardware; we solved all these problems in no time. The open
space under the refrigerator was incorporated into the design and became a storage
compartment. The new latch was substantial as well as attractive (like the door handle
of an expensive automobile, the hinges were made unobtrusive, and the name plate
looked like a piece of jewelry). The new design connoted quality and simplicity.
40Shelves had been a serious problem for the refrigerator industry. At the time, I was
working in Detroit on the front-end design of the Hupmobile. While looking at it, it
struck me as being the perfect material for my Coldspot shelves. I ordered several
samples with the right perforated slots, had them cut to the dimensions of the Coldspot
shelves, and took them to Sears Roebuck. They were a sensation—attractive, foolproof
45in manufacture, and completely rust-resistant. These shelves were adopted, imitated by
the industry, and have been standard ever since. The discovery was, incidentally, a
windfall for the aluminum industry, which supplied the metal for several million shelves
each year, and it remains a classic example of design cross-pollination.
For the first time, Sears Roebuck 1 went “artistic”. The Sears catalogue unblushingly
50printed: “Lovely modern design,” “Study its beauty,” “A better refrigerator, in spite of
the fact that it costs only half as much.” That last item was a bombshell. Discovering
that improved appearance can reduce cost, industry started to look our way.
