Shenise Stuurman finished her diploma in Business Management at Nelson Mandela

Metropolitan University. In 2014 she has embarked on another year of study to convert her
diploma to a degree.

Being a part of the Born in Africa programme is an honour for all our students. From the youngest
grade 1 learners right through to the senior grade 12 learners, we have a good reputation in the
schools and as a result there are also regular applications to the programme.

When Born in Africa was established our selection criteria were somewhat different at first with our
main focus being on selecting the “poorest of the poor”. With experience we learnt that this method
did not always deliver success as a learner’s motivation to succeed plays a far more important role.
As a result of this gradual development of policy, it is now perceived as a privilege and an
achievement to be in the Born in Africa programme. Learners have subsequently adopted the
"hard work breeds success, laziness produces mediocrity" policy which motivates them to do their
best both personally as well as academically.

It has been four years now since the initial implementation of the Born in Africa Tertiary
Programme where we select and sponsor our students to pursue tertiary studies. The selection
criteria are understandably stringent as we undertake to sponsor all their financial needs. They
need to maintain a satisfactory academic level and conform to our code of conduct which includes
attending all classes, abstaining from alcohol and drug abuse and so forth. In line with this zero
tolerance attitude, behavioural problems are always dealt with and usually resolved very swiftly.

Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role
models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and
young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay South Africa.

Mentors in action
Born in Africa mentors Belinda Coram, Sarija Bewee, Marita Manual and Catherine Schoeman are all very excited about the
progress made with their learners so far this year. Born in Africa learners attend group sessions with their allocated mentor
after school every week. During the sessions they cover monthly themes, work on school tasks and of course also write thank
you letters to their godparents.
During their last theme they focussed on a subject which is not shared in public in many cultures and that is the subject of “Sex
Education”. South Africa is faced with extreme social problems such as teenage pregnancy, HIV / AIDS and child abuse / rape.
In order to address these problems Born in Africa has implemented a primary intervention strategy by introducing the teaching
of sexuality education to our learners during their group sessions, a safe environment where they can ask questions.
We covered another age appropriate theme with our younger learners, namely “manners for young people”. Table manners
and different types of etiquette were taught to the learners and they especially enjoyed acting out the table setting scenarios.
Even though everyone enjoyed the theme and there was lots of laughter, the message was most certainly brought across.

Here are some pointers about manners that they took home with them:
 Do not put your elbows on the table at formal occasions - place your
hands on your lap
 Start eating only once every one has food or when your hostess says
you can start
 While you are chewing your food, put your knife and fork down on
your plate
 Always remember your A B C - Always be caring, comforting and
courteous
 Early is on time!
 Never greet from your seat - get up and greet
