We're getting messages of solidarity from all around the world - first up, here's Vienna!
The struggle for decent housing is international! #TakeBackTheCity
Our street meeting with Focus E15 Mothers is underway at the steps of 34 North
Frederick street. Pop down and join in the discussion!
On Thursday we introduced you to Patricia Ní Greil aka Orla McGreal, the legal owner of 34
North Frederick Street. On Friday Colm McGreal & Barbara Tracey/McGreal paid us a visit in
person -- so we think it’s time you got to know Mammy & Daddy a little better. After all, Orla
hardly managed to buy her own four-storey period property in Dublin City Centre at the tender
age of 31. Sure she's been off volunteering in Romania, hardly saving for a deposit!

As we’ve already heard, Colm McGreal is an insurance intermediary & advisor by trade, and
Barbara Tracey a school teacher. They also have a sideline in property, because life's really dull
without a bit of property speculation on the weekends.

Colm & Barbara's first company was McGreal Insurances Ltd. It ran from 1987-2003, and was
registered to 7 Sydenham Rd, in Ballsbridge, D4 -- this is believed to be the family home.

Throughout the late 1980s and into the ’90s, they had an eye for spacious period properties around
Dublin city. They acquired various properties in Lower Leeson St, Fitzwilliam Place and Lower
Mount Street, and rented them out presumably as office space.

Then came the early ’00s, when the McGreals partied as much as anyone else.

Starting in 2001, they amassed a portfolio of at least 19 apartments in new developments across
the country – this in addition to the period properties they already had in south inner city Dublin.
In Dublin 7, Wellington Quay, Ballymun, and Rialto; Newtownforbes in Co. Longford; Duleek,
Co. Meath; Carrick-On-Shannon, Co. Leitrim; and in Waterford City.

How did they manage all this, alongside their day-jobs?

Their insurance firm was no more, having closed in 2003. Though Colm was presumably still
doing freelance insurance work – he’s worked for several high-profile companies like Aviva Life
& Pensions, Irish Life Health DAC, Scottish Provident, & Zurich Life Assurance to name a few.
Always enterprising, the McGreals managed their property portfolio through two new companies.
In 2002, Colm & Barbara opened Gracanica Ltd. and Brorup Ltd. (catchy!) -- with the supposed
purpose of "Buying & Selling of Own Real Estate",these traded as Achill Property Holdings and
Achill Management Services. Gracanica Ltd. was the only shareholder of Brorup Ltd., so Brorup
Ltd. handled the day-to-day running of properties, while Gracanica Ltd. handled the ownership
side of things. Several of these properties were re-mortgaged at various stages, presumably to
purchase more, or to keep the others afloat. Standard fare for people with over 20 properties to
their name – treat them like the investments they are.

In 2013 the McGreals ran into a spot of bother - Gracanica Ltd. went into Receivership. This was
linked to mortgages taken out on several of their properties that were going unpaid.
By order of the Receiver, they were sold on over the next few years. In Nov 2017, Gracanica Ltd.
was declared solvent again. A happy ending after all!

Then in 2016, our beloved 34 North Frederick St. came on the market.
This building was already in Receivership, having belonged to the Duffys of Duffy Mangan
Butler, an auctioneer firm who were dragged over the coals during the Flood Tribunal – suffice to
say, they were hit badly during the Recession and 34 North Frederick St was just one of their
casualties.

Oddly, the McGreals bought 34 North Frederick Street despite the fact that their main property-
owning company (Gracanica Ltd.) was in Receivership at the time, and they were being forced to
sell on several of their other properties. The McGreals do love a good Georgian property, so
having been forced to sell some on the leafy south-side, they somehow managed to get approval to
buy another – admittedly in the less salubrious neighbourhood of Dublin 1.

The question is, how did they get approval for a mortgage while they were in Receivership for not
meeting repayments on another one.

Of course, neither Colm McGreal nor Barbara Tracey/McGreal chanced to put their name on the
deeds of this latest acquisition. They’re too smart for that. Instead, they landed their daughter Orla
with it.
This evening at 7pm a group of men emerged from a van wearing balaclava's and
smashed their way through the doors of occupied 34 Frederick street north using
industrial machinery. Under the watchful eye of the Garda Public Order Unit, they
violently removed occupants from the property and locked themselves in.
Gardai subsequently used force and pepper spray against peaceful protesters across the
road and have arrested many. We are now calling on all organisers, volunteers and
supporters to rally at Store Street Garda station to demand the release of those who have been
taken into custody.

OCCUPATION & HOUSING ACTION

AUGUST 2018

The housing situation in Ireland is a national emergency. In June of this year, there were
9,874 people registered as homeless. Average rents have hit an all time national high of
€1,304 per month. This is 75% higher than in 2011 and 26% higher than the peak level
in the Celtic Tiger. In April of this year, there were 19,220 on the housing waiting list for
Dublin City Council alone. These numbers are only the tip of the iceberg. There are
uncountable numbers of hidden homeless - people staying on sofas, in cars, packed in
with family members - alongside thousands trapped in substandard accommodation and
paying exorbitant rent.

Landlords, investors and developers are directly gaining from the insecurity and suffering
of the housing crisis. While prices rise, developers and investors buy up land and
property, then sit on it, leaving thousands of building empty across the island just so they
can turn a profit. Thousands of bogus rent increases and eviction notices go in a year,
tearing family homes out from under peoples feat, more homes are turned into slums,
overcrowded, run down and then knocked and redeveloped as part of the gentrification of
communities.

Enough is enough. Now is the time to get organised and work together.

In May 2018, a collective of grass-roots housing and community action groups, soup
runs, student and migrant groups came together. Two housing forums were organised in
June & July, and a day of action saw banner drops, an occupation of vulture fund
Kennedy Wilson, information stalls, leafleting, and a community dinner and gig.

In the end 7 groups came together to plan an occupation. Blanchardstown Housing

Action Committee, Dublin Central Housing Action, Dublin Renters Union, Migrant &
Ethnic Minorities for Reproductive Justice, Take Back Trinity, Brazilian Left Front, A
Lending Hand & North Housing Bay Housing Crisis Committee.
On Tuesday the 7th of August, hundreds marched from the GPO to 35 Summerhill
Parade and seized the building from slum landlord Pat O’Donnell.

After 10 days, an occupation of the Custom House (office of the housing minister Eoghan
Murphy), a Family Fun day, days of door knocking and a “Summerhill-16 for Housing”
Demo on Dublin GAA semi-final day, an injunction was served and a private security
team were (RFC) hired by Pat O’Donnell, in preparation for a merciless eviction. On
Friday the 17th, an elaborate game of hide and seek played out, as the occupation
reappeared at 34 North Frederick St! A second property was taken.

At North Frederick St, door knocking, a second protest at the Custom House and a
women’s only occupation drew a new community into housing direct action. Ten new
groups joined: Dublin West Housing Action, Dublin North West Housing Action, Anti-
Racism Network, Mobile Homeless Run, Campaign for Public Housing, Cavan Housing
Action, Queer Action Ireland, Dublin Bay North Choice and Equality Network, and
SPARK - Single Parents Acting for the Rights of our Kids.

Colm McGreal and his Daughter Orla McGreal, insurance and debt restructurers, came to
light as the owners of the property - veritable housing hoarders. Threats of injunction,
aggressive filming and verbal abuse were not enough to remove
the #takebackthecity Occupation, and on Day 21 the occupation continues stronger than
ever.

The Occupiers of 34 North Frederick St encourage people around the country to get
organised around housing. Without us ordinary people affected by the crisis, there will be
no change and the crisis will get worse. We will continue occupations and direct actions
over the coming months.

-- Why are we occupying buildings? --

Grassroots groups involved in the occupation set out three goals at the outset of the
occupation:

1. We want to spark the housing movement and encourage more direct action.
There is a need to defend communities using tactics like anti-eviction work and direct
action (such as occupation). We felt this would inspire groups across the country to get
active and get organised.

2. We want to build community.

The Housing Crisis is affecting the majority of communities in Ireland. Families have
been forced into homelessness, evictions are happening everyday, rents are increasing
exponentially, and mortgages are unaffordable. While many of the older generation are
more secure, they now worry for their children and grandchildren facing bleak prospects
in terms of fair rents and a secure home.
Communities have the power to organise together, and to tackle these problems
together. That means wherever we set out to occupy, we make sure to engage with the
community, listen to their housing needs, and build a collective community response to
the housing crisis.

3. We wanted to show who is causing the crisis.

Often, policy-makers & “the market” are blamed for the housing crisis. Sometimes people
blame the government for failing; some blame migrants, the unemployed, or single
mothers. But we wanted to give the whole picture. We know that the State as a whole is
to blame - this includes the councils, housing agencies, charities, housing department
and government. Alongside the State there is a whole web of private business interests
complicit in this crisis. Landlords, vulture funds, investors and financial institutions, banks
and accountancy firms, letting firms and management companies, not to mention private
security firms used to evict people. All are profiting from the crisis; they need to be
exposed.

---- What are our Demands? ---

1. Summerhill Parade 33-39, owned by slum landlord Pat O’Donnell, and 34 North
Frederick Street, owned by Orla McGreal, should be CPO’d by the Council, given back to
the community and turned into public housing.
2. All vacant land and property in Ireland should be CPO’d by the council, be given back
to the community and turned into public housing and community facilities.
3. Tenant security and fair rents. More specifically, a total ban on economic evictions, a
reduction in rents, and rents capped at 20% of income or €300 per room max.

Everyone needs a secure and safe home. Everyone must be housed across the country,
with fair rents and decent conditions. The right to a home must take priority above private
profit and ‘investment’ properties. These are radical but practical demands.
Every empty building could be surveyed and CPO’d by councils, then put to use as
housing or community centers with resources to benefit every community.

-- Take Action! --

1. Groups to set up in every county and community on the island.

2. Occupations to spread across the country
3. The re-launch of the Irish Housing Network on the 8th of September
4. Put pressure on other campaigns, parties and organisations to take immediate and
firm action on the housing crisis.

This excessive brute force used by unmarked and balaclavaed men was meant to ensure
this eviction was as brutal and efficient as possible.

Not because they wanted the building empty. No, they could do that without unmarked
masked thugs in unmarked vans wielding angle grinders and sledge hammers.

This was about ensuring that the MOVEMENT behind the occupation never takes hold.

means necessary than to allow it to gain traction.

SIX PEOPLE WERE arrested this evening after housing
activists were removed from a vacant house on North
Frederick Street in Dublin.
A private company called to the property at 34 North
Frederick Street this evening to remove the activists, who
have been defying a court order to remain in the building for
a number of weeks.
The order was issued on 28 August, when the High Court
ordered that all persons occupying the house vacated it by
2pm the following day.
Justice Michael Quinn granted Patricia Ní Greil, the owner
of 34 North Frederick Street, Dublin 1, injunctions requiring
persons unknown to vacate and cease trespassing and get
out of the four-storey building.
It was not immediately clear who the private company were
acting on behalf of, but a number of individuals had their
faces covered as did members of the garda public order unit
who were also on site.

Dozens of activists gathered outside the property to protest

the move afterwards, before gardaí arrested five men and
one woman over public order offences.
The property was boarded up by 8pm, leading to angry calls
from the protestors.
There are also reports that at least one person has been
taken to hospital.
Around 100 activists subsequently stood outside the
building to chant in protest at the eviction, before marching
down O’Connell Street towards Store Street Garda Station.

Traffic was brought to a standstill as the crowd marched

through that section of the city centre, turning from
O’Connell Street onto Abbey Street.

The crowd chanted anti-government slogans, and also

negatively against Fianna Fáil, while also demanding for the
release of the activists held inside. A number of them were
released following the group’s arrival at Store Street Garda
Station.
The activists have previously said their actions are designed
to highlight the ongoing housing crisis.
In a statement following the eviction, a spokesman for the
Take Back the City group told TheJournal.ie that activists
will be “emboldened” by this evening’s developments.
“This will make no difference to us, there’s plenty more
vacant buildings we can occupy around Dublin,” he said.
“The campaign is as strong as it’s ever been, and we’ve been
getting messages of support on social media all night.”
Upon his release, one of the activists said that this was only
the beginning of the movement, as the movement could
target other vacant buildings in the city centre.

Also present at Store Street station was Solidarity-PBP TD

Bríd Smith. She told TheJournal.ie that when she heard the
occupiers had been removed from the property, she resolved
to come down.
“I came down because I want to support them as a TD and
someone who’s involved in the housing campaign,” Smith
said. “I think there’s a great contrast between what’s
happened here tonight and what happens on a daily basis in
the Department of Housing. This minister [Eoghan Murphy]
and the previous one [Simon Coveney] have overseen a
rapidly worsening housing crisis.”
She said that movements involving primarily young people
had been able to make a difference in the past, and that the
youthful presence at this protest helped to “provide a
catalyst” for activism on the housing crisis.
Smith said the motion of no confidence launched by Sinn
Féin against Minister Eoghan Murphy would “separate the
men from the boys” so we could “see who means business
when it comes to tackling the housing and homelessness
crisis”.
No confidence in and of itself doesn’t mean much, but it’s
symbolic of how politically the Dáil feels about the housing
crisis… We should see the no confidence motion as part of a
wider campaign to bring it to the pinnacle of political
concern in this country.
The occupation of the building on North Fredrick Street
followed the similar occupation of a building on Summerhill
Parade.
An associated group of activists also marched to occupy a
third building on Belvedere Court in Dublin 1 last Saturday.

Delira & Excira to see this! Take Back The City - Waterford a

Press release for immediate publication 07/09/2018
Activists Occupy Vacant Building in Waterford
Following another increase in the number of homeless people, activists in
Waterford have said enough is enough and initiated a 24 hour occupation of
a vacant building on O'Connell st. The building is the former Presbytery now
owned by W.C.C.C. This follows a summer of occupations in Dublin. The
‘Take Back The City-Waterford’ group are demanding the government and
their representatives in the council take action to end the crisis. The group
comprises of Community activists, Trade Unions, People Before Profit and
the local branch of United Against Racism.
Local People Before Profit Rep, Una Dunphy said, ‘There is now over 10,000
people homeless in Ireland, including 3,800 children. More are in mortgage
difficulties and more again are struggling to pay huge rents or living in
substandard accommodation. The government have ignored calls from every
corner of society to declare a national emergency and address the crisis.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy issued targets last year, he said Waterford
would build 687 new social houses between now and 2021. This is a
ridiculously low number, but even so only 11 social houses were built last
year. There are over 3,000 on the housing list in Waterford and it's growing
with many eviction orders before the courts. There is over 110 people
homeless in Waterford at present.’
Michelle Byrne, a local activist added, ‘The housing crisis is a direct result of
the government choosing to allow landlords, private developers and vulture
funds reap huge profits instead of building houses. This is a class issue.
Many are being forced into homelessness. The Council need to take action
and make use of the vacant buildings and build more social housing. Rents
are skyrocketing too in Waterford as there are no rent caps in the same way
there is in other cities. My own rent went up 15% this week - completely
legally."
This is reflected by comments from Ivan Grimes the council director of
services in charge of housing in Waterford who said "the challenge is to get
the property market buoyant enough so that new builds will become
attractive enough again for developers". But the market is not responding
with builds because it is designed to continue to stream profits to the elite
few.’
The activists core demands are:
For the council to build affordable social housing on the land banks at
Carrickperish and Kilbarry. Public Land should be used for Public Housing!
There are around 8,000 vacant homes in Waterford. We are calling on the
council to invoke Compulsory Purchase Orders and use these homes!
We want to see rent caps introduced. This can be done by linking them to
inflation. Homes are for need, not greed!
A public meeting has been organised for next Thursday, the 13th of Sept at
7pm in the Unite Union Hall, Keyzer St. Speakers on the night are PBP Rep
Una Dunphy, Michelle Byrne, USI Vice-President for Campaigns and an
activist from the Dublin Summerhill Occupation and United Against Racism.
Members of the community are also being asked to join the National Housing
and Homeless Coalition’s Demo outside the Dáil on Oct 3rd at 12.30pm.
Simply the reason why this continues is because the public is so divided on this issue. If we
all stood together then change would have to happen. Unfortunately a lot of the mentality out
there is that homeless people are lazy and less than. If we can't unlock compassion in these
people's hearts, then we are a nation divided and therefore our people get controlled and
abused.
As promised, there's exciting news to follow - stay tuned. In the
mean time, a little update on the north Frederick street
occupation:
It's a week today since the high court injunction was posted and
we are continuing to resist. Thank you for the donations of
boardgames, last night a few fitting rounds of monopoly was had
and thankfully there were no fall outs.
Practical support is always both welcomed and needed; drop the
page a DM here if you can help out, cheers.
Thugs. Well the people didn't stand for the arrest of the occupiers. They walked to Store St
Garda station and stormed it. Demanding their release. They released them very quickly.

The property on North Frederick Street was taken over by a group last month.
It followed a 10-day occupation of a building at Summerhill Parade a short
distance away which ended after the High Court ordered protesters to leave.

Mi5’s chief operative in Ireland is now the commissioner of the Free State

The appointment of Drew Harris demonstrates that the Free State remains a
British Semi- Colony.
It is the role of Socialist Republicans to win the people away from the
partitionist states represented by Drew Harris and his ilk, back to the
Socialist Republic proclaimed in 1916.
YOU ALL KNOW THE IRISH GOVERNMENT, GARDAI AND JUDICIARY ARE CORUPT.

action, but on the arrests..
What does it say .......

and in it all, We as taxpayers pay the wage of both ..
As Connolly Wrote 120 years ago .. so his words ring true today

Such action would be neither honourable nor feasible. Let us never forget that he never reaches

(1) Why did the Gardai permit private security to wear Balaclavas on the streets of Dublin ?

(2) Did the Gardai permit private security to assault "UNARMED" activists ?

(3) Did the Gardai permit private security operate a vehicle that wasn't legally meant to be on the road ?

(4) Did the Gardai permit a vehicle to be used in an eviction that wasn't road worthy

(5) Did the Gardai permit a private security company break numerous road traffic laws ?

(6) Did the Gardai and Private security Authority allow private security Guards operate in violation of the law by
not displaying their security license ?

(7) Did the Gardai use pepper spray and was it used in accordance with the rules laid down on its use ?

(8) If Pepper spray was used , has each guard written a statement on why it was used

This evening Gardai again used excessive force to undermine a peaceful demonstration. It seems the Gardai cannot

Housing activists have been removed from a Dublin city
centre property that they had been occupying for the last
three weeks.
Six people were arrested by gardaí at the scene.
Shortly before 7pm on Tuesday a number of men in
black balaclavas entered the property at 34 North
Frederick Street. Gardaí from the public order unit
attended the scene to separate the men who entered the
property from a large number of activists from the Take
Back The City group, who were behind the occupation.
While several men in balaclavas stood at the entrance to
the property, more than a dozen gardaí wearing face
masks blocked protesters from accessing the building.
A large number of people supporting the occupation
gathered on the street opposite the building.

Six activists involved in the Take Back The City group
were arrested after confrontations with gardaí on the
street outside the property.
A Garda spokesman confirmed the individuals were
arrested on public order offences, and were being held at
various Garda stations in the north city centre area.
Gardaí appeared to brandish batons and pepper spray
during the incident as they directed protesters to clear
the road outside the property.
The owner of the property, Patricia Ní Greil, secured a
High Court injunction on August 28th requiring the
protesters to leave the building, which the occupants
defied.
Boarded up
The men wearing balaclavas boarded up the entrance
after an hour inside the property. The men would not
identify themselves, or who they were acting for, when
approached by The Irish Times.
The men then drove off in a white van, which had no
front registration plate, and a British registration plate
on the back. Shortly afterwards, gardaí outside the
building left the scene, to cheers from the protesters.
The Take Back The City group has been behind a string
of protest actions occupying vacant buildings in Dublin
city centre, to protest about the housing crisis. The group
includes activists from Dublin Central Housing Action,
student group Take Back Trinity, and Dublin Renters’
Union.
Shortly after gardaí left the scene the group marched to
Store Street Garda station to protest over the arrest of
the six activists.
The group is also occupying a vacant property on
Belvedere Court. The occupation protests began in early
August when the group occupied a vacant building on
Summerhill Parade, owned by Pat O’Donnell & Co Ltd

November last year, Sweeney has a core salary* of €330,000 per year, plus a potential
bonus of another €330,000, plus a 15% contribution to her pension fund, plus €20,000
expenses.

That salary gives you some idea of the sort of profit that IRES REIT are making from the
2,500 apartments that they own in Dublin.

More than 700 of those apartments are in Sandyford and IRES REIT have applied for
planning permission for another 550.
Real Estate Investment Trusts were invited into the state by the Fine Gael and Labour
government as part of their 'solution' to the problems of the housing sector. With 'leaders'
like that, who needs enemies!

NAMA currently own a site with full planning permission for 460 apartments in Sandyford.
Instead of developing the site for Universal Public Housing NAMA are instead going to
flog it off, with IRES REIT one of the companies most likely to buy it.

If you believe that this, and other, NAMA land should be used for Universal Public

UPCOMING COURT CASE Thursday SEPTEMBER 13 @10:30 Court 4 CCJ Parkgate

St.

This Thursday September 13, Dónall Ó Ceallaigh is to appear in the CCJ to face a
charge of violence disorder section 15 of the public order act, following his arrest two
weeks ago from his home relating to a anti-fascist protest over two years ago.

The protest was against the far-right group Pegida who tried to set up an Irish branch in
Dublin on February 6, 2016. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets that day to insure
that this hate group was not successful in establishing a branch here. There were similar
protests throughout Europe at the time.

Full support for Dónall as he faces this charge.

More than 100,000 housing

queries for Citizens
Information Board last year
‘Significant proportion of our clients ... struggle to meet
rising housing costs on limited means’

people in private rented accommodation, is a key area of concern for those
who contact support services. File photograph: Rui Vieira/PA

September 12, 18
Housing queries received by Citizens Information Board
(CIB) services surpassed the 100,000 mark for the first
time last year as people fought to secure homes.
In its pre-budget submission, the CIB - which funds a
number of services including the Money Advice and
Budgeting Service (Mabs) - said the number of housing
related questions from members of the public had risen by
15 per cent in 2017 when compared with the previous year.
Over half related to local authority and social housing
while 20 per cent were to do with private rented
accommodation. Mortgage repayments continue to be a
source of concern too.
“During the past ten years, the scale and pace of changes
in the Irish housing landscape has been striking and has
been acutely felt by a significant proportion of our clients
who struggle to meet rising housing costs on limited
means,” the CIB document, published on Tuesday, states.
The housing assistance payment scheme (Hap), which
aims to support people in private rented accommodation,
is a key area of concern for those who contact support
services.
In particular, concerns relate to the limited number of
homes available to Hap tenants; the standards of
accommodation; the lack of clarity regarding how taking
up the Hap scheme might affect people’s place on the
social housing list; and the reluctance on the part of some
landlords to participate in the scheme.
In its pre-budget submission, the CIB says measures
should be taken to further incentivise property owners and
to publicise the benefits of accepting Hap tenants, as well
as further enforcing property standards.
More than 770,000 calls
The various services run by the CIB - including the
Citizens Information Services, the Citizens Information
Phone Service and the National Advocacy Service for
people with disabilities - received more than 770,000 calls
in 2017.

“These services are well placed to have a clear

understanding of the problems that people experience
when trying to access social and public services,” the
document notes.
Of the more than one million queries dealt with, 45 per
cent related to various social welfare issues, notably in the
areas of disability, illness and carers (over 110,000),
benefits for families and children (75,000) and extra social
welfare benefits (73,000).
There were about 54,000 queries regarding pension
entitlements, indicating a lack of general knowledge in the
area “and a good degree of confusion” among those soon
to retire.
Issues affecting those with disabilities and older people
also feature prominently, particularly in relation to home
supports.
The CIB has called for additional budget resources for
measure that address issues of disability, illness, carers
and working family payments.
It has also cited the need for an increase in the rate of fuel
allowance and the introduction of a cold weather payment
scheme, as well as a new homecare scheme.
The report says the demographic profile of Mabs clients
has remained relatively stable over recent years but the
number of mortgaged clients “has steadily increased since
the recession began”, from 36 per cent at the end of 2009
to 45 per cent this year.
“A significant cohort of clients of Mabs are burdened with
unsustainable legacy debts and remain excluded from
access to affordable credit and are consequently locked out
from the wider economic recovery,” it said, and it asked
the Government to consider the issue of financial
inclusion.

About 500 protesters blocked North Frederick St before marching

to the junction of Parnell Street and O'Connell Street, where they
blocked traffic.
WHY THE OUTRAGE? THIS IS REGULAR

Protesters march to
O'Connell St over
repossession
Updated / Wednesday, 12 Sep 2018 18:38
The Take Back The City group say they are holding the protest in
support of five people arrested during the repossession

By John Kilraine
Dublin Correspondent

Protesters demonstrating over the eviction of people

from a building that was subject of a repossession
order have blocked the junction between Parnell
Street and O'Connell Street.
The Take Back The City group say they are holding
the protest in support of five people arrested during
the repossession of the property at Dublin's North
Frederick Street.
They claim that four other people were injured during
an operation by a private security firm and gardaí to
end the occupation at North Frederick Street.
About 500 protesters blocked North Frederick St
before marching to the junction of Parnell Street and
O'Connell Street, where they blocked traffic.
The group, which it says represents 18 "grassroots
organisations", previously complied with a court order
to vacate a building on Summerhill Parade and
occupied a third property on Belvedere Place - all in
the north inner city.

It comes after the Private Security Authority said that

people involved in the execution of repossession
orders are not licensable by the body.
The PSA was responding to a claim by the Labour
Party that the private security hired to remove
protesters from the property on North Frederick
Street last night appeared to break the law by not
wearing any identification.

00:14
In a statement the PSA said the execution of
repossession orders does not fall within its remit and
that the law and procedures in this area are
contained in the Enforcement of Court Orders Acts
and rules of court.
The PSA also says that any dispute in relation to the
execution of a court order is a matter for the courts.
A number of politicians, including Solidarity TD Mick
Barry and Social Democrats Councillor Gary Gannon,
also expressed concern about the role of gardaí in
the eviction of protesters from the house in North
Frederick Street last night.
The owner of the property secured a High Court
injunction two weeks ago ordering the protesters to
leave the building the following day, but they did not.
The men who evicted the protesters had their faces
covered and community gardaí, as well as officers
from the public order unit, were on the scene and
also had their faces covered.
The Garda Press Office said members of the public
order unit were wearing fire retardant face masks,
which are part of their uniform.
The protesters left the house peacefully but five other
people, four men and a woman, were arrested for
public order offences.
Gardaí say two were subsequently charged with
public order offences, two were given adult cautions
and in the case of the other person a file will be sent
to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
All five were then released.
In a statement this afternoon, Garda Headquarters
said it does not comment on remarks by third parties,
but An Garda Síochána respects the right of people
to protest peacefully.
It says the force's role at such events is to facilitate
peaceful protest while protecting the rights of
individuals to do their lawful work safely - in this case
carrying out an order of the High Court.
It also says An Garda Síochána's objective with any
such operation is to ensure the safety of the public.
A spokesman for the Garda Representative
Association said "the ski mask is sometimes worn by
the Public Order Unit for their own safety."
GRA Director of Communications John O'Keeffe said
"the hood is flame retardant and in a time when
horrific acid attacks are becoming more prevalent, it
also offers some further protection from sprays or
gases, or any other noxious substance."
He added that "the idea that our members were
somehow part of the problem, is errant nonsense."
Concerns over use of force
Amnesty International Ireland has raised concerns
about "possible excessive and unnecessary use of
force" during the eviction.
"Gardaí should only facilitate and support the actions
of private security personnel where they are lawful
and do not involve excessive force," the group said in
a statement.
They said it is of concern that the private security
personnel reportedly failed to display identity badges,
as required by law.
A number of political parties, including Sinn Féin, the
Social Democrats, the Workers' Party and Solidarity-
People Before Profit, have also raised concerns over
the actions of gardaí during the protest.

Those scenes of forced eviction of protestors from the premises in North Frederick Street in Dublin City
centre by masked men and Gardaí is nothing new. So why the sudden outrage? -Surely you have seen it all
before or maybe this is your first time seeing a forced eviction taking place in which you are naturally going to
express outrage?

Sure, it was some individual's private property that the protestors were holding out in but they felt that they had to
make a public point and that was their chosen method and so be it. They did far less damage than the evictors
managed to do to the premises.
So why the outrage? Is it because it happened to take place in a very public place with many witnesses with
cameras?

The reality of this situation is that it is not an isolated case and that because it doesn’t appear on Facebook or any
other form of social media with hundreds of thousands of views doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen elsewhere. It
happens on a very regular basis but you never hear about it.

Many concerned individuals have posted stories on families facing and actually experiencing evictions at the
ruthless hands of the vulture funds and banks but most especially of the state in the form of the courts and Gardaí
who both willingly facilitate the process. These stories garner limited attention but that’s as far as it goes and it’s
not good enough.

What you are going to see much more of in the future is the distinct possibility of another twenty nine thousand
families suffering the exact same fate at the hands of vulture funds and banks.

The real responsibility lies with the government and politicians for not having the balls to face down the ECB, the
vulture funds and banks and to do the job they were voted in (by the few) to do on behalf of the people and not the
vulture fund, banks and corporations with whom they share vested interests that are at odds with their real jobs
which is to work for us and not to shaft us at every opportunity..

As a journalist who has taken a great interest in the eviction process, from being in the courts to the actual eviction
events themselves, what you saw last night is standard practice in most family home evictions throughout the
country, but you never hear of them happening as they take place in rural boreens, country lanes, small villages
and the odd time in a large rural town where there are rarely any witnesses to the event.

These masked and armed eviction teams are contracted in by retired Gardaí who run security companies here in
the South, and who had found great difficulty in sourcing individuals to act as eviction teams from this
jurisdiction, hence the ex-Gardaí security company owners made contact with “security companies who operate
from East Belfast” and are known to be loyalists, many with serious criminal backgrounds.

What you saw last night was exactly what a terrified husband, wife or partner and children who are being evicted
from a family home by the banks or indeed a rogue landlord have to face without any help or support from anyone
other than people from the various anti-eviction Taskforce groups based around the country. In fact it wasn't
exactly like what a family would face - it is far worse than you can ever imagine. Your worst nightmare!

Even then many people don’t know who to turn too and therefore no one shows up other than Loyalist eviction
teams backed up by Gardaí who turn a blind eye to much of the horrific violence that is shown to the family if they
resist the eviction.

Where will YOU be when they need you?

Ended up in the Maher hospital last night after a violent eviction of the North
Fred street occupation, a building lying empty for three years now set to be
transformed into a much needed Hotel - 20 armed thugs wearing balaclavas
smashed through the front door of the building with power tools under the
protective eye of the public order unit shortly after 7pm. Gardaí assisted in
the battering and arrests of four peaceful housing activists - they were there
to defend the private security as they assaulted and injured those resisting
the eviction. A comrade was admitted after receiving a blow to the head
leading to a concussion & I have had four stitches put after being assaulted
by the hired goons.
This comes as a damning reminder that for the state, defending the interests
of private property trumps the needs of the many suffering the housing crisis.

Still processing everything that happened last night. Just out of hospital myself with concussion and
injuries to my neck that will need further attention. In total four of us needed medical attention last night
after brutality from masked cops and the balaclava'd, criminal, loyalist security firm. These were

No surprise though, the state is rotten, the police are scum and landlords and the rich run the show. Hopefully

Protesters march to
O'Connell St over
repossession

The protesters left the house peacefully but five other
people, four men and a woman, were arrested for
public order offences.

James Faulkner who act as a Judge in the district court in East Galway and South Roscommon area
had to abandon the bench in dishonour while James Muldowney who acts as a Garda Seargent had to
abandon the witness box in disgrace in Castlerea Court house on Friday the 7th of September when I
defended my case under Common Law. First I sent in notification to the court services the previous
week telling them that I wanted my case heard under Common Law . Then when my case was called I
sprung to my feet and said ,, i the man commonly known as pat cannon am an idiot, I do not understand
legalees , if you have anything to say to me please put it in writing. Then I asked James Faulkner acting
as a Judge if he had received my notice BUT! By this time James Muldowney acting as a Garda
Seargent and claiming to be prosecuting the case on behalf of some one else was in the witness box
and had started to speak so I turned to him and pointing my finger at him I said ,,James Muldowney
have you any First hand experience of the facts pertaining to this matter? If you don't have first hand
knollage of the facts please sit down,,. I repeated this again as he was leavening The box BUT! James
Faulkner acting as a Judge ordered himto get back in the witness box till he ( Faulkner ) had finished.
Then I ask ,,is there any man in this place that says I have done him wrong,,? Then James Faulkner
acting as a Judge ajurned the case and i said to him ,,if that is your wish my fee for attenending on that
date is 35,000 euro's,,. My offer was not rebutted and no counter offer has been made so James
Faulkner has accepted the contract and unless I receive notification that the case against me has been
dropped and that I don't have any case to answer he will owe me 35,000 euro's on my appearance in
court on that date. At that James Faulkner acting as a Judge ran from the bench in dishonour and
James Muldowney acting as a Garda Seargent ran from the witness box in disgrace, 2 other men acting
as Gardai then confronted me and started shouting at me to get out of the courtroom and saying that I
was in contempt of court, they treatened to arrest me under the public order act , I said that I would
leave in a minute BUT! that I required to address the Court Registrar first. I then said to the court
registrar ,,court registrar for the record i require 35,000 euro's to appear here at the next hearing of this
case,, again the 2 men acting as Gardai attacked me, ordering me out of the courtroom and making
treats against me, SO! I raised my hands above my head and shouted ,,I surrender, I surrender, I
surrender, please I beg the Mersey of the court to protect me, these 2 men are interfering with my rights
to a fair trial,, . By this time I was moving towards the back door of the courtroom hotly perused by 3
Gardai now as the 2 had been joined by another man acting as a Garda BUT! before I left i turned again
I said to the court Registrar ,,court registrar don't forget to place on the record that my fee for returning
here on the next date is 35,000 euro's,, I then politely thanked the 3 Gardai for their assistance and left
the area. Later on after lunch in a totally unrelated incident a riot broke out and up to 40 people were
involved, the courtroom was recked and the disturbance spilled out onto the streets of Castlerea extra
Gardai had to be drafted in from surrounding areas to help bring the situation under controle. All I can
say when tyranny is in power rains anarchy is inevitable.

IRELAND'S YOUNG POLITICIANS GETTING COUNSELLING AHEAD OF TRUMP VISIT: News is

breaking today that since the announcement that American President Donald Trump will visit Ireland in 2
months, Ireland's political youth are in meltdown. Sources in all the political parties have confirmed that
the vast majority of their youth membership are already receiving counselling because they are unable
to deal with the prospect of Donald Trump visiting Ireland. Ireland's News Chronicle also discovered that
many active members of the Union of Students of Ireland (USI) are also receiving counselling because
of the Trump visit. We asked some students and young politicians on the streets why they were
opposed to the visit of President Trump to Ireland. "He is just creepy. I heard Catriona Perry who reads
the news say he was creepy so it must be true" said Orla Ni Lesabain, who is doing a degree course in
gender studies at UCD. Other young people who are involved with unions and politics echoed her
sentiments. "Donald Trump is an old, male, red haired, ugly, rich person. So he ticks all the boxes for
being a racist, misogynist, bigot. People like him should never be allowed into politics" said Helga Van
Fukken of Labour Youth. A spokesperson for The White House responded to our question which is 'Why
do Ireland's students and young politicians not like the current American President?' The statement
read: "The President of the United States Of America is looking forward to visiting Ireland and meeting
the good people of Ireland. He understands that certain students and young left wing politicians do not
agree with his policies. So he has agreed to meet with them when he visits Ireland and he will offer them
jobs in his companies across the globe. The President has a heart and he wishes to give hopeless
youth with no future a chance of employment and release them from their future unemployability" the
statement said.

RTE's propaganda news is at it again. The lead story on their news bulletins all day today is
'BUSINESSMAN' Sean Gallagher is seeking nominations to run for the Presidency. Incidental news in
the same bulletin is the intention of Sinn Fein to contest the Presidency. Absolutely NOTHING was
broadcast on either RTE or TV3 when others such as Gemma O' Doherty and Kevin Sharkey
announced their intention to run. It is obvious that RTE do not consider an out of favour award winning
journalist or an artist who overcame a bad patch in his life, to be worthy of mention because they are not
part of the elite political, media, corporate and celebrity establishment. That establishment continuously
looks down its nose at the rest of us with utter contempt. The assumption by RTE that anyone outside of
that elite establishment will be 'also rans' when the votes are counted is just sheer arrogance of a most
sinister nature. As a nation of people being sneered at by 'our betters' on a daily basis, it was never
more important than the present time to give the establishment a good kick up the arse on Presidential
election day. Do we have it in us to do just that? Are we afraid to go against the prevailing same old?
Are we so masochistic that we enjoy having our noses rubbed in the establishment's shit all the time?
There was never a better opportunity to at least symbolically send someone to the Phoenix Park who is
NOT one of them. Because one thing is certain, the likes of Higgins, Duffy, Gallagher et al are not one of
us. They epitomise everything which is rotten in this failing society.

The PESCO army is ready to invade, but first minister Donohue

has to put a few billion aside in the budget for buying seriously
lethal killing machines. Thankfully his boss Verucca's pals
Monsieurs Macron et Trudeau have the latest weapons of mass
destruction for sale right now. Discount? Non. We are Irish - we
like to pay our way. And sure, what's FOUR BILLION ... that would
only house a few thousand homeless after the builders and
bankers had their cut. Mr Donohue might shop around 'though
and get a PESCO bargain from Fine Gael's friends in Israel - more
blood and guts for less?
So, are you ready to enrol? If you are too old, don't worry - just
send your kids or your grandchildren, the EU army needs them!
Micheál too, and his Soldiers of Destiny want you to join the
cause. Fight and die in Africa or Afghanistan. Micheál will join Leo
in the wreath laying ceronomies when the bodies come back.
They might even give the wounded medical cards.
p.s. you must avoid Dublin and other Irish cities in the near future
- the jihadies might be annoyed at us killing their babies and send
suicide bombers...
When people are dying in the streets, you don't get to hold the moral high-ground
defending corporate policing to protect the wealthy who are hoarding empty properties
out of greed...
True story Ireland 2018 they couldn’t even be bothered sending across a decent wagon
instead us fools get a piece of shit filled with pieces of shit monitored by pieces of shit taking
orders from bigger pieces of shit, but feck what do I know I live in “democratic Ireland “

The primary role of the police in a capitalist society is to protect
the property rights of the ruling class. The state is not and never
has been an impartial force presiding over society. Historically the
state itself emerged as a means to protect the privilege and
ownership rights of the ruling class and to pass them on to the
next generation. And under the current capitalist system, the state
serves the interests of the dominant capitalist class whose gains
are invariably made at the expense of the majority working class.
This is why we see the Gardai standing in defense of masked
bailiffs as housing activists or families are thrown onto the streets
in the teeth of a homeless epidemic in order to secure the
profiteering rights of the capital owners.

Men in balaclavas criticised

THE ACTIONS OF gardaí and a group of men wearing
balaclavas have been described as “a heavy-handed
overreaction” after housing activists were removed from a
vacant house last night on North Frederick Street in Dublin
resulting in the arrest of five people.
The Take Back the City (TBTC) group has criticised the men
wearing balaclavas for not wearing identification during the
eviction and the gardaí for backing them up.
The men arrived at the property in Dublin city centre just
before 7pm last night to remove the activists, who had been
defying a court order to remain in the building.
Justice Michael Quinn granted Patricia Ní Greil, the owner
of 34 North Frederick Street, Dublin 1, injunctions requiring
persons unknown to vacate and cease trespassing and get
out of the four-storey building on 28 August.

A spokesperson for TBTC said that a van without a

registration plate at its front and a UK registration number
at its rear pulled up outside 34 North Frederick Street with
15 to 20 men.
The spokesperson noted that none of these men were
wearing any identification to indicate the name of their
employer.
It is understood that the men in balaclavas who weren’t
gardaí were hired as private contractors by the landlords,
and that they were wearing balaclavas as previously they
have been subject to intimidation and threats because of the
nature of their work.
It is also understood that the absence of a registration plate
on the van was a security measure to ensure that identifying
factors were not present on the vehicle.
Shortly after the arrival of the men, three members of An
Garda Siochána attended the scene. As a crowd gathered
outside the building to protest the eviction, members of the
garda public order unit were dispatched to the scene.
The activist group has said that physical force was used
against a number of attendees while five activists were
arrested.
A member of An Garda Síochána from a minority
community was racially abused at the scene last night, it is
understood.

Commenting on the arrest of the five protestors, Green Party

Justice spokesperson, Roderic O’Gorman said that it was
alarming to see that a protest seeking to highlight the
serious housing crisis in the city was policed in this manner.
It is unsettling to see gardaí policing a protest in balaclavas.
“It sets out a highly confrontational tone and is the exact
opposite of the openness and transparency in policing that
we should expect from An Garda Síochána. The gardaí must
examine the tactics that have been employed here,”
O’Gorman said.

‘Heavy-handed overreaction’
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire Sinn Féin justice spokesperson said
that the accounts of the incident that he has heard gave “an
impression of a heavy-handed overreaction to a peaceful
housing occupation”.
“I have received reports of private security arriving in
unmarked cars and also reports of protestors being
threatened with pepper spray. I have also received reports of
an injured protester.
If these accounts prove to be correct, then this constitutes an
absolutely disproportionate response.
The new Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and the Minister
for Justice need to explain properly the “heavy-handed”
tactics used by the gardaí according to Labour Justice
spokesperson, Séan Sherlock.
“While we must respect court decisions, the tactics used in
removing peaceful protesters who occupied a property on
North Frederick Street that had lain empty for a number
years must be explained.
“The Commissioner should outline how this operation was
coordinated and at whose request and why such military-
style tactics were used. Further, I would expect the Minister
for Justice to comment on the type of tactics used, and
whether he supports this type of intimidatory policing, and
if he is comfortable with men in balaclavas carrying out
forced evictions,” Sherlock said in a statement.
Commenting on yesterday’s eviction a garda spokesperson
said that the only role of the gardaí was to prevent a breach
of the peace.
“The eviction itself was peaceful. However, a large crowd
gathered on the street and five people, one woman and four
men, were subsequently arrested for public order offences
and assaults on garda members,” the spokesperson said in a
statement.
A statement from An Garda Síochána later added that it
“respects the rights of people to protest peacefully”.
“An Garda Síochána’s role at such events is to facilitate
peaceful protest while protecting the rights of individuals to
do their lawful work safely – in this case carrying out an
order of the High Court. Our objective with any such
operation is to ensure the safety of the public,” it said.

Two charged
Following the eviction, the property was boarded up while
100 activists subsequently stood outside the building to
chant in protest at the eviction, before marching down
O’Connell Street towards Store Street Garda Station.
The crowd chanted anti-government and anti-Fianna Fáil
slogans while also demanding for the release of the activists
held inside. A number of them were released following the
group’s arrival at Store Street Garda Station.

Government Issue Free Balaclavas To Landlords Of
Vacant Properties
September 12, 2018

IN THE WAKE of an occupation by protesters of a vacant building on North

Frederick Street in Dublin City and their subsequent ejection by masked men,
the Government has rushed through emergency legislation which will see all
faceless landlords of long vacant properties issued with balaclavas.

It is thought the balaclavas can be used by landlords when hiring big burly
men to reclaim their properties by force, saving them from the risk of showing
their face for fear they could be identified and held accountable for their
actions.

The last thing we want to see happen is there to be some sort of accountability
for landlords sitting on idle properties during a massive housing shortage,”
explained an official from Department of No Housing, “the balaclava really
allows the average landlord of a vacant property to do whatever it is they do
without fear of us intervening with some common sense”.

The government has also announced an amnesty for groups of men in

balaclavas driving around Ireland in vans with no number plates or motor tax.
The plan has been criticised by some however, as the price of sending
balaclavas to US based, tax exempt vulture funds in post could be costly.
Gardaí, who admitted to having more important things to do, were called in to
assist in securing the property and several people were arrested after it was
revealed they were brandishing ‘loud voices’ and displayed an intent to
‘endanger the Government’s image of Ireland as a country with a booming,
consequence-free economy’.

The protesters, described by the Communications Unit as ‘scum’ and ‘clearly

not Fine Gael voters’ had been attempting to occupy a building in what
onlookers labeled something ‘very unbecoming’ and ‘not something normal,
decent Irish people who stick their heads in the sand would do’.
