From the Margins to the Mainstream? Disaster Research at the

Crossroads

The author’s goal is to increase the relevance of this theme, not just following past
instructions of pioneer’s researchers from this field. For him, it is necessary a great effort
to link these events to related fields, broadening the range of the area, raising its visibility
in front researcher’s community. He also aims that this path shall unleash the field from
past studies, leading the area to new definitions through “sociology mainstream” (p. 504)

The author tries to present what researchers of this field have worked, adding his
drawings on how the situation about disasters are changing with a sociological

THE RETURN OF THE REPRESSED: THE FALL AND RISE OF EMOTIONS IN

SOCIAL MOVEMENT THEORY :
As well as cited in the text “From the Margins to the Mainstream”, there is a
connection between the two texts that can be relevant to this analysis. When considering
the author’s argument, we are facing what is next about this study field. It is possible to
be a match, especially when we dispose from the same circumstances in the current
moment. In both texts, we can relate that there is a shift moment. Where old traditions
became less relevant. On “The Return of the Repressed” sociologists related that emotions
are improving the streams of research on this field, increasing the range of its possibilities
of study. That is exactly what Kathleen J. Tierney is trying to show on her text. (p.78)

As a personal experience, it is possible to relate that in many different areas we
are facing shift moments, or disruption as known. Through it we realize how the
circumstances around us can shape our perspective about something. This thinking lead
us to the questioning if there is something capable to define and control our
circumstances, and even the way we may think.

satisfactorily, answered by the text. The question should be a question of
interpretation or of inquiry, not simply a question of fact. Use the reading tips

As said in the text by the author, “natural and technological disasters provided
useful laboratories for studying social behavior” (p.504). I am pondering if it is possible
that disasters can shape the way we study social behavior. Because, it is important to
consider that natural e technological disaster can be caused by someone’s purpose, with
an intention, again, to shape the way we look to our society and develop our studies. So
how the text can consider and manage private ou government interest with disaster? Can
we rely on facts that are exposed in sociological studies, with the parameter of data about
our behavior through disaster?
