South City examines inclusionary housing

Proposal to require affordable units in rental developments unpopular with builders

South San Francisco officials are weigh-
ing an initiative designed to facilitate con-
struction of affordable housing units in new
rental developments, despite concerns
raised by home builders.
The South San Francisco City Council
will consider Wednesday, Sept. 12, an inclu-
sionary housing proposal mandating as
much as 15 percent of all new rental devel-
opments to be set aside at an affordable rate.
The proposal, which comes in the wake of
slate of housing laws combating the state’s
affordability crisis, is unpopular with exec-
utives from development companies seek-
ing an exemption from the proposal.
Alex Greenwood, the city’s Economic and
Community Development director,
acknowledged the issues raised by builders
while also noting the need to construct
more below-market-rate housing in South
San Francisco.
“We want a balanced amount of growth
and we want affordable housing to be a part
of that,” he said. “And we recognize that
construction costs are increasing and there
are other factors that are making housing
harder to develop, but this has got to be
something that is considered.”
The fears surrounding the rising cost of
development are cited by building company
officials seeking a grace period before the
proposal is implemented, should it be
approved.

tial ordinance, for fear of disrupting an
already established budget.

Two Redwood City palms to be removed

Two palm trees in downtown Redwood
City will be removed next week after they
succumbed to a fungal infection.
On Sept. 17 and 18, the city’s Public
Works Services Department will cut down
two canary island date palm trees, one of
which stands in front of the Fox Theatre and
the other adjacent to Courthouse Square. The
trees have already been killed by an infec-
tion called fusarium oxysporum, despite the
city’s best efforts to save them.
City spokeswoman Meghan Horrigan said
a number of canary palm trees in the city
contracted the same disease and were treated
with a preventative spray that only worked
on some of them. The trees were in planted
in 2007 and each one costs $35, 000.
Removing these two palms will cost
$7,000.    Sep. 8.
Several were removed in 2014 for the
same reason, which also plagued the trees
on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. The
fungus is common in palm trees.
Horrigan said it could take about a year
before new trees are planted at those loca-
tions because staff will need to test the roots
after they are cut down to ensure they’re dis-
ease-free and won’t infect their replacement.

planted meet the “architectural standards” of

Big safety testing failure rate for state pot products

LOS ANGELES — Nearly 20 percent of
marijuana products in California have failed
tests for potency and purity since the state
started requiring the checks on July 1, a fail-
ure rate some in the industry say has more to
do with unrealistic standards and technical
glitches than protecting consumer safety.
The testing has been especially tough on
cannabis-infused cookies, candies and tinc-
tures: About one-third have been blocked
from store shelves.
In much smaller numbers, testing compa-
nies licensed by the state are finding unac-
ceptable levels of pesticides, solvents and
bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella,
according to data provided to the Associated
Press by the state Bureau of Cannabis
Control.
In the first two months, nearly 11,000
samples were tested and almost 2, 000
failed. In some cases, the product must be
destroyed. But many involve labeling
issues that can be corrected. For example, a
marijuana bud that’s tested to show a differ-
ent potency than what’s on the label can be
relabeled and sold with the right specifica-
tion.
To the state, the strict testing program is
largely doing what it was designed to do:
identify marijuana buds, concentrates,
munchies and other products that are in
some way tainted and unsuitable for eating
or smoking.
“Mandatory statewide testing is a new
thing and it’s going to take some time for
everything to run smoothly, but on the
whole we’re pleased with how things are
progressing,” Bureau of Cannabis Control
spokesman Alex Traverso said.

Swetha Kaul, the company’s chief scien-

said in an interview the state needs to “cre-
ate a bigger net to catch things.”

Claims on the label, such as THC content,
accounted for 65 percent of the failures, or
1,279 tests.
This is how the rule works: If a bottled
juice drink said on the label it was 25 per-
cent apple juice, testers would have to find
that the concentration in the juice was with-
in 10 percent of that mark, plus or minus.
It’s the same with cannabis.
Next in line: About 400 batches were
flagged for unacceptable levels of pesti-
cides. Impurities such as bacteria and mold
caused 114 rejections.

New data show slow Bay
Area housing production
New data shows that Bay Area housing
increased by only 14,900 new units in
2017, less than 30 percent of the number of
new jobs in the region during the same peri-
od, according to data released by the
Metropolitan Transportation Commission
and the Association of Bay Area
Governments.
The number of new housing units, mostly
apartments and condominiums, was much
less than the 52,700 new jobs estimated by
the California Employment Development
Department to have been added in the nine-
county Bay Area last year.
The imbalance highlights the region’s
“housing crunch” and reinforces its posi-
tion as one of the nation’s most expensive
places to live, MTC officials said.
Other findings show that permits for sin-
gle-family homes have stagnated since
2008 while multifamily units like apart-
ment buildings have nearly doubled to
15,000 in 2016 from 8,000 units in 2009.
Multifamily housing accounted for 70 per-
cent of the 21,000 units permitted by Bay
Area municipalities in 2016.
The data is part of the Vital Signs initia-
tive by the MTC and ABAG that monitors
the region’s progress toward reaching key
environmental, transportation, land use and
economic policy goals. More information

Brown signs bill outlawing
drones above state prisons
Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Monday
outlawing drone flights over state prisons,
jails and juvenile facilities.
State Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, intro-
duced Senate Bill 1355 earlier this year after
several state prisons reported drugs and
other contraband that were smuggled into
the facilities via drones.

‘Big and vicious’: Hurricane
Florence closer to Carolinas

WILMINGTON, N. C. — Motorists
streamed inland on highways converted to
one-way evacuation routes Tuesday as about
1.7 million people in three states were
warned to get out of the way of Hurricane
Florence, a hair-raising storm taking dead
aim at the Carolinas with 140 mph winds
and potentially ruinous rains.
Florence was expected to blow ashore late
Thursday or early Friday, then slow down
and wring itself out for days, unloading 1 to
2 1/2 feet of rain that could cause flooding
well inland and wreak environmental havoc
by washing over industrial waste sites and
hog farms.
Forecasters and politicians pleaded with
the public to take the warnings seriously
and minced no words in describing the
threat.
“This storm is a monster. It’s big and it’s
vicious. It is an extremely, dangerous, life-
threatening, historic hurricane, ” North
Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.
He added: “The waves and the wind this
storm may bring is nothing like you’ve
ever seen. Even if you’ve ridden out storms
before, this one is different. Don’t bet your
life on riding out a monster.”
Some hoped for divine intervention.
“I’m prayed up and as ready as I can get,”
Steven Hendrick said as he filled up gaso-
line cans near Conway, South Carolina.
President Donald Trump declared states of
emergency for North and South Carolina and
Virginia, opening the way for federal aid. He
said the federal government is “absolutely,
totally prepared” for Florence.
All three states ordered mass evacuations
along the coast. But getting out of harm’s
way could prove difficult.

miles southeast of Cape Fear, North

tially catastrophic Category 4 storm but

of helping a former street preacher kidnap
Elizabeth Smart as a teenager in 2002 from
her Salt Lake City bedroom and hold her
captive will be freed from prison in a sur-
prise move announced Tuesday by state
authorities.
Wanda Barzee, 72, will be released Sept.
19 after the Utah Board of Pardons and
Parole determined it had miscalculated the
time she previously served in federal cus-
tody, board spokesman Greg Johnson said
in a news release.
She will be under federal supervision for
five years.

Less snow prompts push to lengthen Grand Canyon season

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — With snowfall dwin-
dling at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim,
tourism promoters see an opportunity to
stretch out the visiting season at the less
popular side of the canyon so more people
experience it and spend money in the
region.
The canyon’s North Rim is fully open less
than half of the year and isn’t as easy to get
to as the South Rim, which attracts 90 per-
cent of the canyon’s annual 6.25 million
visitors. The North Rim has equally stun-
ning views but is more serene, with cooler
temperatures and far fewer tour buses.
The North Rim lodge and its infrastructure
weren’t meant to handle harsh winters, and
most employees are hired seasonally because
of the historically heavy snow. Last season,
however, saw just a fraction of the area’s
average, and the snow didn’t come until
January and February.
Overnight lodging at the North Rim shuts
down Oct. 15, as do ranger-led programs and
most concession services. The rim is open
for visitor day trips until the highway closes
Dec. 1 — or with the first significant snow-
fall — and then the entire area reopens in
mid-May.

The 30-year average for snowfall at the
North Rim is more than 11 feet yearly, but
the average over the past decade has fallen by
more than 3 feet annually, according to the
National Weather Service.
The season-to-season amounts can fluctu-
ate greatly. About 3 feet fell between last
October and May, indicative of a drier weath-
er pattern in the Southwest. More than four
times that amount fell in the same period the
previous season, making a weather-based
decision to extend the visitor season more
difficult.
Readjusting the North Rim season makes
sense from a climate change perspective,
said Jonathan Overpeck, a climate scientist
at the University of Michigan
“There’s some caution warranted because
we will still get the big snow storms and the
big snow years that they want to protect the
visitors from,” he said Tuesday.
The North Rim sits at more than 8,000 feet
and is bordered by national forest land where
a herd of bison roam. It has few amenities —
a 1930s lodge that’s a national historic land-
mark, a gas station and a campground.

Organization of Iran, whose Tehran campus
encompasses a nuclear research reactor
given to the country by the U.S. in 1967
under the rule of the shah. But in the time
since that American “Atoms for Peace”
donation, Iran was convulsed by its 1979

Embassy in Tehran.
For decades since, Western nations have

District Board of Trustees, leaving
voters with a tough choice for the
challenging positions.
Each of the four candidates would be
a solid choice for the district, in the
midst of a challenging time when it
comes to finances and its future. For
the past few decades, San Bruno Park
has faced difficult decisions when it
comes to its finances. The more trou-
ble it has, the more trouble it has
with enrollment. Now with a new
superintendent at the helm, the dis-
trict is moving toward revamping its
school system with fewer neighbor-
hood schools and increasing enroll-
ment at new schools to be recon-
structed using bond money the district
hopes to obtain through voter
approval this Nov. 6 and by selling
off property no longer needed.

BART tunnel under the Bay are too
expensive. BART already has issues
with train car replacements being
late, used equipment being installed
on the new extensions and obsolete
technology requiring custom fabrica-
tion for maintenance.
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has
mentioned funding for another bridge.
No one is going to move to the Bay
Area and begin commuting by car just
because a new bridge may be built.
Refusing to add traffic lanes to force
commuters onto public transportation
is an inadequate strategy because pub-

not make sense tomorrow if enroll-
ment starts to grow. However, the cir-
cumstances of years of financial tur-
moil leave little choice. San Bruno
Park is heading in the right direction
for its particular needs but this path
won’t necessarily be smooth because
of the tough decisions ahead.
With that in mind, a little stability
might go a long way. Appointed
incumbent Andy Mason is at the top
of the learning curve and interested in
keeping lines of communication
open. Longtime incumbent Henry
Sanchez tends to go along with the
guidance of the superintendent but
provides some institutional knowl-
edge and perspective. Newcomer Teri
Sanchez has burnished a resume of
community involvement and would
lic transportation options are limited.
If the state could afford to build the
“designer” Bay Bridge that cost bil-
lions without adding vehicle capaci-
ty, surely California could construct a
crossing to reduce delays and the pol-
lution that comes from idling cars and
trucks.

Controversy on Elon Musk
Editor,
I see where Tesla stock dropped,
partially because Elon Musk was
offered a joint on comedian Joe
Rogan’s podcast. Elon is obviously
not too experienced with it, as he had
to ask what it was when the smell
would have been a clue to an experi-
enced smoker. Additionally, he didn’t
inhale, he rolled the smoke around in
his mouth like a cigar.
Too bad Musk hasn’t exhibited
behavior more in line with that of
many big business types like sexual
harassment of subordinates, insider
trading and the like instead of the car-
dinal sin, however ineptly executed,
of attempted pot smoking.
Now the government has concerns
because Musk being CEO and vision-
ary of Space X, maker of the worlds
most successful private space vehi-
cles, and god knows you can’t take a
hit of pot and be successful at that.
Perhaps Musk should offer his serv-
ices to the Chinese, starving for the
kind of expertise the genius Musk can
offer for their space program. He can

Former trustee Chuck Zelnik has
insight, smarts and history but brings
some baggage from the past that
might get in the way of the district’s
forward path. If the district was well
on the road of progress, it might be
able to absorb a new trustee with an
alternative point of view but now is
not the time for that.
The current board, however, might
heed some of his concerns about its
approach to getting out of its finan-
cial hole as it moves ahead. The dis-
trict is by no means out of its finan-
cial burdens and there is much work to
be done. However, it has a plan, and
that is progress. As long as its
trustees keep the lines of communica-
tion open and incorporate the points
of view of everyone in the communi-
ty, that path will lead to prosperity.
There really is no other choice.

Dear Editor,
I would like to strenuously object
to the proposed scope of work for
this project “SMCCCD Building 20

College District. Removing the trees,
garden, landscaping and greenhouses
and increasing the amount of hard
scape paving directly counters the
state of California and the governor’s
stated climate impact goals of reduc-
ing greenhouse gases and global
warming.
In addition, I have observed the
parking lots during peak hours at the
many existing lots and they are never
near capacity. Therefore, creating
more parking is simply a complete
waste of capital money.
I strongly urge the board to reject
this wasted capital project and instead
install more landscape islands with
trees in  existing parking lots in
order to reduce the impact of global
warming.

Preying priests
“A ll power is a trust and we are accountable for its
exercise.” — Disraeli.
It’s the patriarch thing — still predominant in many
institutions of our society. From many families, to the
church, to government, men obsessed with authority and
power mostly run things, people often revere them, and
no matter how corrupt the patriarchs, there are enough
people that cling to the father figure tenaciously and fur-
ther their cause. 
In spite of the advances of the women’s movement, in
many areas patriarchy has managed to remain alive and
kicking — and its destructive ramifications are often
evident in the news. This is not only about the priest
child-molesters, but the
church hierarchy’s cavalier
cover-up — patriarchal
authoritarian mindset
turned catastrophic. Add
those who allow them all
that power.
Many questions come to
mind. Why were so many
of the children who were
sexually abused by the
priests unable to talk
about what happened?
Why were the few parents
who were told about it in
such denial that they
couldn’t comprehend? What kind of arrogance imbued the
hierarchy who went to such great lengths to cover it up?
Why was it more important for those in charge to protect
the perpetrator than to protect innocent children? Do
these priests and the hierarchy feel at all sinful because
they betrayed people who trusted them as examples of
morality, integrity and compassion? How desperate are
they to protect their position of unquestioned authority?
A clue: The Dean of the College of Cardinals dismissed
the accusations as “petty gossip.”
How can so many people who live in a free society go
along with any religion that is its antithesis? Doesn’t
everyone know that giving a closed system that much
authority and power is never a good idea — even when
cloaked in the mantle of religion? Is believing that
those aligned with religion and the church have godlike
qualities and that they are beyond reproach comforting
to those who can’t stand uncertainty in their lives? Why
have we been so protective of the church that we have
avoided the truth for so long? Haven’t we known all
along that some of those who answer a religious “call-
ing” do it for reasons other than we might expect — such
as guilt, arrogance or to escape freedom and reality.
Erich Fromm in “Escape from Freedom” wrote about
authoritarians of all kinds. “In a psychological sense,
the lust for power is not rooted in strength, but in weak-
ness. It is the expression of the inability of the individ-
ual to stand alone and live. It is the desperate attempt to
gain secondary strength where genuine strength is lack-
ing.”
So what results from this “secondary strength?”
Brainwashing a child into unquestioning obedience to
any authority may stoke the ego of the authoritarian and
satisfy his abundant need for power, but the child loses
his autonomy in the process — often the authoritarian’s
goal. Many such children come to believe that they are
not capable of independent thought and, in the case of
the church, that those who are in charge are omnipotent.
In this way, followers, including the children’s parents,
aided and abetted the pedophile priests by going along
with the patriarchal mindset of a church that should have
moved out of the dark ages long ago.
Is there any better reason for children to be brought up
to be psychologically strong, self-confident, able to
think critically, aware that they are worthy individuals
who don’t have to be glued to some deity, dogma or a
charismatic person to compensate for the emptiness in
their lives? Especially in today’s world, learning to be
skeptical and being able to say no when appropriate is
more important than ever. Learning to recognize and
become wary of anyone who would exploit them
(whether someone on the internet, a lecherous relative,
corporate interests, a charismatic politician or the reli-
gious zealot) is essential to a child’s well-being as well
as an adult’s.
It is helpful to remember what Alon Gratch, Ph.D.
wrote in “If Men Could Talk” regarding patriarchy and its
related conformity. “Clearly orthodoxy, be it religious,
intellectual or political, has a vested interest in keeping
its followers childlike. As long as they’re emotionally
and intellectually dependent on the rigid truths espoused
by a higher authority, followers are less likely to ques-
tion the legitimacy of the entire system.”

Maybe a real 7-foot Christmas tree
NEW YORK — Watch out for the 7-foot box on the
doorstep. Amazon plans to sell and ship fresh, full-size
Christmas trees this year.
But a live tree is no paperback book. Amazon says the
Christmas trees, including Douglas firs and Norfolk Island
pines, will be bound and shipped without water in the usual
sort of box. Amazon said they’ll be sent within 10 days of
being cut down, possibly even sooner, and should survive
the shipping just fine.
Amazon.com said the trees, wreaths and garlands will go
on sale in November. Some will qualify for Prime free ship-
ping, and Amazon will offer pre-orders so shoppers can
choose a delivery date. The company sold trees shorter than
3 feet last year, and some other merchants sold bigger ones
using its platform as a marketplace. But this is the first year
Amazon is offering the larger trees itself.
“Given the popularity among customers, we increased the
assortment,” the company said.

Wildcats were no laughing matter.
In last week’s Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division
volleyball opener, the Wildcats yielded 24 service aces to
Menlo-Atherton. And the opening set of Woodside’s home
opener Tuesday against Burlingame was no different.
“M-A has really good servers,” Woodside head coach
Sonja Gavioli said. “But of course 24 is unacceptable no
matter who they are. And the first set today as well.”
Burlingame scored five aces in a Game 1 win. But as
Woodside junior Sarah Strus stepped to the service line after
an early timeout in the second set, she was all smiles, and
even couldn’t help laughing mid-serve at something one of
her teammates cracked from the sideline.
Strus ultimately had reason to smile, going on an seven-
point service run, including three aces of her own, as the
Wildcats (1-1 PAL Bay, 7-4 overall) bounced back for a four-
set victory 15-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 over reigning
league champion Burlingame, marking the Panthers’ first
league loss since Oct. 27, 2016.

M-A wins showdown

There was an early-season showdown in
Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division
girls’ tennis when the top two teams from
last season — defending champion Menlo-
Atherton and second-place Carlmont
—  faced off in the second league match of
the season.
The final score looks lopsided — M-A
posted a 6-1 victory —  but the match was
actually a lot closer than that. A couple
games here or there and the match could
have been much closer.
“If you give them an inch, they’re going
to take it, ” said Carlmont head coach
Margaret Goldsmith about the Bears.
For M-A head coach Tom Sorenson, he
was just glad to get out of Belmont with the
win.
“We’re convinced we’re going to have to
play well to beat teams like Carlmont,”
Sorenson said. “We never underestimate the
potential Carlmont has.”
The Scots had first-set leads in five of the
seven matches —  No. 1, 2 and 3 singles,
and No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Annika Lin was
up 3-2 in the first set at No. 1 singles,
Sakina Bambot led 5-4 at No. 2 singles,
while Veronica Gittoes won her No. 3 sin-
gles match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
Both the Scots’ No. 1 and No. 3 doubles
teams —  Juhi Mehta and Alyssa Nguyen,
and Bella Reeves and Nikhila Raman had
leads of 2-1 and 4-3, respectively.
Each time, however, their M-A counter-
parts rallied.
“Some of the girls have learned [not to
panic when the match is close],” Sorenson
said. “They know they expect to perform
well under pressure. That’s responsible for
winning close sets.”
The Bears’ new No. 1, Alison Brown, a
junior who is in her first year of high school
tennis after being home schooled, got a
break to tie her match with Lin at 4-all and
then held serve to take a 5-4 lead on her way
to a 6-4, first-set victory.

turned a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead on her way
to a first-set win, 6-4.

for fights, and a string of new deals means
there’s more boxing on free television than
ever before.
And, of course, there’s Saturday night.
That’s when Gennady Golovkin and
Canelo Alvarez step into the ring at the T-
Mobile Arena to try to settle what they
couldn’t the first time around in a hotly
anticipated showdown with the mid-
dleweight title at stake. The fight is a
rematch of their draw last September, and
this time both fighters have made it clear
they just don’t like each other.
It’s a combination that should make this
a pay-per-view worth reaching into the wal-
let for, though it’s not cheap. Boxing still
insists on a buy-in for its biggest fights,
and at $84.95 to watch at home, this fight
needs to deliver in a big way to justify the
cost.

Terra Nova girls’ water polo rolls to 3rd straight win

Despite dwelling ocean side, the Terra
Nova girls’ water polo team has never been
considered a Peninsula Athletic League pow-
erhouse. Not by a long shot.
With the Lady Tigers off to a 3-0 start in
PAL Ocean Division play, though, the tide
may be turning for a program that has never
qualified for the Central Coast Section post-
season.
After opening the season with decisive
wins over Hillsdale and
Sequoia, the Tigers trav-
elled to San Mateo for a 7-
1 victory Tuesday after-
noon. With the win, Terra
Nova maintains a share of
first place in the Ocean
Division.
“We’ve definitely start-

great. … So far, so good. But we have a long

The backbone of Terra Nova’s fast start,
though, has been spectacular defense. Senior
goalkeeper Carly Watts continued her domi-
nance that started a year ago, when she
earned team MVP honors as a junior. Watts —
who earned Daily Journal Girls’ Track Athlete
of the Year in the spring as a CCS champion
discus and shot put thrower — has allowed
just nine goals this season.
“She’s a huge part of our team,” Potter said.

Cañada soccer off to
strong start; Skyline
is struggling early on

2017 saw both the Cañada and Skyline men’s soccer teams
qualify for the playoffs, doing so in different ways. Skyline
finished with an overall record of 14-3-4; second in the
Coast Conference South Division standings with a 7-2-4
mark; and the No. 6 seed in the Northern California play-
offs.
Cañada, on the other hand, squeaked into the postseason
following a fifth-place conference finish (4-4-5) and earned
the No. 13 seed with an overall record of 8-4-7.
So far in 2018, the roles appear to be reversed. Cañada is
off to a strong 2-0-1 start, while Skyline has started slow
out of the gate, dropping its first two decisions.
If there is a commonality to both teams it’s their willing-
ness to find top-notch non-conference opponents. The
Colts, after opening with a 5-0 pasting of West Hills, tied a
San Joaquin Delta squad, 2-2, that was an honorable men-
tion in the first rankings of the season last week. Cañada
then knocked off defending Big 8 Conference champion
Santa Rosa, 1-0.
The Colts will face defending state champion Fresno City
College Thursday in the Central Valley.
Skyline opened the season with a 1-0 loss to American
River, an honorable mention in the state rankings. The
Trojans followed that with a 3-1 loss to state power Taft,
which is ranked second in the state in the early going.
The Trojans will host Coast Conference North rival
Foothill at 2 p.m. Friday.
Jorge Lopez, a sophomore midfielder out of Menlo-
Atherton, is off to a hot start for Cañada, having scored in
all three games, with two coming against West Hills. Angel
Lara-Parga, another sophomore coming out of Sequoia, has
scored twice and added an assist, while Oisin Doherty-
Fagan, a freshman defender out of Hillsdale, has assisted on
a pair of goals as well.
Sophomore goalkeeper Manny Alvarado (James Logan-
Union City) has been stellar to start the season, having
allowed just two goals and posting a pair of clean sheets. He
was outstanding in the 1-0 win over Santa Rosa, finishing
with 10 saves.
Skyline has struggled to find the back of the net early in
the season, with Jehimy Arias scoring in the 3-1 loss to
Taft.
Skyline goalkeeper Erik Portillo has not been tested a lot
so far, facing three shots against American River and four
more against Taft. But he has allowed four goals on seven

gles player, Maddie Wachhorst dropped the first set to
Christina Wu, 6-3, and was done 5-2 in the second.
But Wachhorst mounted a furious rally, winning five
straight games to take the second set, 7-5, and then held off
Wu in the third, 6-4.
It clinched the match-winning fourth point for the
Panthers, minutes before Aragon grabbed its third win of
the match when Jessica Fu downed Vedika Bhaumik in three
sets, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2.
Molly Wachhorst and Olina Du, playing at No. 3 and 4
singles respectively, gave Burlingame wins in three of the
four singles matches.
Annika Ganguly and Sofia Biddle picked up Burlingame’s
only doubles win with a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Aragon’s Aretha Chen and Romy Pachtner won at No. 1

Southern returned the favor with a 6-4 win in the second. In
the tiebreaker, Wang posted a 12-10 decision to win the
match.
San Mateo went on to win all the other six matches in

Fiers stays unbeaten with A’s after win over Orioles

BALTIMORE — The acquisition of Mike
Fiers has coincided with the Oakland
Athletics’ surge toward the postseason.
With a pitching staff decimated by
injuries, the Athletics will be leaning heav-
ily on the right-hander to
help anchor the rotation.

Baltimore Orioles 3-2 on

“I feel like if I do my

the bats, I find myself in a good chance to

Oakland extended its winning streak to
five games and is 33-15 since the All-Star
break, the best mark in the majors during
that span. The Athletics hold the second AL

SAN FRANCISCO — Mike Foltynewicz
has minimal experience pitching in mean-
ingful September games, so saving the
Braves bullpen and going the distance as NL
East-leading Atlanta gained separation in
the division meant so much at this stage.
Foltynewicz pitched a six-hitter to win
for the first time in nearly a month, Charlie
Culberson hit a two-run homer after enter-
ing as an injury replacement and the Braves
sent the San Francisco Giants to a 10th
straight defeat with a 4-1 win Tuesday night.
“It’s just really good to go out there and
put up a game like this against these guys
in the middle of September,” Foltynewicz
said. “This is kind of my first time really
pitching in September. Just going out
there, I felt strong the whole game. It’s in

Fiers (12-6), who was acquired from the
Tigers on Aug. 6, allowed one run and four
hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. He is
5-0 in seven starts with the A’s and has won
a career-best six straight decisions overall.

giving us,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin
said. “Six innings and a lead when he
leaves. Seems to get a little stronger at

Campbell didn’t score a kill in the opening
set. Over the final three sets, she blew up for
a match-high 19 kills.
“She’s the leader of the team,” Gavioli
said. “She didn’t get a kill in the first set and
that’s partly why we didn’t play well. … I’m
happy with how she played but she’s usual-
ly super spectacular.”
Campbell’s first kill of the evening was
the first service point of Strus’ run in Game
2, an impressive back-row pipe to give the
Wildcats a 2-1 lead. A kill through the mid-
dle by senior Mckenna Brown and three
Strus aces later, and Woodside never looked
back in the set.
A change at the libero position also
helped Woodside right the ship, especially
with serve receive. Senior Maddie Mendes is
one of three players platooning at the posi-
tion this season, so donning the libero’s
jersey mid-match is nothing new for her.
She went on to tab 11 serve receives against
just two receiving errors, and also added
nine digs.
The biggest difference was “the attitude of
the team and the spirit,” Mendes said. “We
picked it up because we knew we had to.”

“That’s a team chemistry thing we’re still

Despite the Wildcats’ serve-receive trou-
bles, they played remarkably clean in the
field. Woodside committed 21 unforced
errors, including just 13 field errors. Over
the final three sets, Woodside totaled 41
team kills to Burlingame’ 24.
Game 3 saw an early back-and-forth but,
with the score tied 8-8, Strus found the floor
with a cross-shot off the left side. The
Wildcats wouldn’t trail again in the set.
Burlingame drew close at 15-13 on a block
by senior Melanie Pitzer. But Campbell
answered with a roll shot out of the back row
to spark a four-point Woodside run.
In Game 4, Burlingame took an early 9-5
lead. Woodside responded with an 8-1 run,
including a Strus kill off the left side to tie
it 10-10, followed by three straight aces by
Campbell. The Wildcats rolled from there.
Campbell finished with a double-double,
adding a match-high 15 digs.
Smith fronted Burlingame with a double-
double, totaling 13 kills and 10 digs.
Senior libero Kaitlyn Ngai shared the
match-high with 15 digs.
“I think we played well,” Smith said. “But
serve receive, we were all over the place at
times. And just being able to see it through
to the end, I think there’s room for improve-
ment there.”

While the program has tradition-
ally struggled with roster numbers,
this year the Bearcats added a jun-
ior-varsity team for the first time in
over 10 years.
“When a season starts, you never
know if they’re all going to stick
around,” Parodi said. “And they all
did.”
Terra Nova saw a similar trend
three years ago in adding its junior-
team as a freshman and has been
thriving at the varsity level ever
since.
Ford is something of a water
baby, but not in the swimming
pool. She grew up surfing with her
father — a native of Ocean City,
New Jersey. She has been surfing at
Linda Mar Beach since age 5.
A two-sport athlete at Terra Nova
— she also plays soccer — Ford
joined the high school water polo
team at the bidding of her friend,
and now fellow senior, Sara Olsen.
Now, she as at the forefront of a
team that can do a little something
of everything, Ford said.
“I think our team brings in every
strength,” Ford said. “So, when we
put it together, it makes for a
strong and competitive team.”

But there’s a lot to like about two big punch-
ers meeting to settle things at 160 pounds
the way fighters used to do it back in the day.
“I believe it will be a big drama show,”
Golovkin said. “I wanted the first fight to be
a big drama show, but he wouldn’t fight me.”
Golovkin’s complaint about Alvarez not
standing toe-to-toe with him in the first fight
isn’t his only issue with the rematch. He also
believes Alvarez is a cheater, and dismisses
his claim that eating tainted meat in his
native Mexico led to the positive test for
clenbuterol.
“It’s very strange because we know what
happened. He was caught for doing illegal
substances,” Golovkin said through an inter-
preter. “As far as his stories about the meat,
you have to be really stupid to believe these
kind of stories after being caught doping.”
Golovkin’s other complaint centered on
the purse split for the fight. Alvarez, who
was a proven pay-per-view draw, got 70 per-
cent of the take in the first fight, and was
supposed to get 65 percent in the second, had
it happened in May as planned.
But Triple G stood his ground, finally get-
ting a 45 percent share after already booking
another fight elsewhere that would have paid
him only a fraction of the millions both he
and Alvarez will make for their showdown.
All of which, of course, has raised some
bitter feelings in the Alvarez camp.
“It’s definitely more personal now. I really
don’t like him,” Alvarez said. “It’s personal,
and I take it that way. It will make me train
harder and give it the extra push to knock
him out.”
The fight itself is a classic matchup that
has the potential to deliver more than the
first fight, a good scrap that lacked the drama
of knockdowns and ended in a draw that satis-
fied neither fighter. Whether it does largely
depends on the chances both fighters take —
or refuse to take.
Golovkin, the Kazakh who lives in Los
Angeles, thought he won the first fight easi-
ly, even though one judge had it 118-110 for
Alvarez. Golovkin did win the early rounds
and seemed to be controlling the action until
he faded late in the fight.
Golovkin, who has knocked out almost
everyone put in front of him (38-0-1, 34
knockouts) has vowed to be more aggressive
in the rematch. Alvarez, too, says he has
some new tricks he will pull out to try to
regain a fan base upset with him after his
positive test for PEDs.
Whatever the strategy, it’s the kind of fight
that might have taken place it in the 1980s,
when the best fought the best under the stars
at Caesars Palace. Boxing is on a roll again,
and the biggest fight of the year should set a
tone for the sport moving forward.
A year after they first met, Golovkin-
Alvarez II is once again must-see TV.

Women’s soccer
Both Skyline and Cañada have struggled
to open the season, going a combined 1-7
going into play Tuesday. The Trojans have
the lone win between the pair, posting a 4-
1 win over Merritt last Friday.
The most obvious issues have come on
defense for both squads. While Skyline is
scoring an average of two goals per game, it
has allowed a combined 19 goals, good for
more than four goals a game.
Cañada has scored four and allowed nine
as the Colts have opened the season 0-4.
Former Woodside standout, sophomore Alex
Augulis, has scored both goals for the Colts
so far this season.
Softball
The CSM softball team surprised former
standout Harlee Donovan over the weekend
by retiring her Bullodgs’ No. 13 jersey.
Donovan, who was named NAIA Player of
the Year this past spring following her sen-
ior season at Southern Oregon University in
Ashland, Oregon, was the 2016 Northern
California Community College Player of
the Year following her sophomore year at
CSM.
During her two years with the Bulldogs,
she set the CSM career home run record with
38, batting .487 and driving in 140 runs
and had an onbase-plus-slugging percent-
age of 1.114.

Tart cranberries and sour cream
make a tasty pound cake sparkle

Pound cake is simple but elegant;
it’s also incredibly rich. We thought
tart cranberries and tangy sour cream
would provide a welcome contrast to
the buttery cake, and the bright cran-
berries would also contribute a burst of
color for an extra-special dessert.
We wanted this pound cake to have a
crumb that wasn’t quite as tight as a
classic all-butter pound cake, so we
used all-purpose flour instead of cake
flour and we thoroughly creamed the
butter.
While cranberries should add tart-
ness, fresh cranberries can border on
acerbic. To tame the sourness, we
tossed coarsely chopped cranberries
with confectioners’ sugar before
adding them to the batter; this also
prevented them from sinking to the
bottom of the pan.
Baking the loaf slowly (for almost 2
hours) in a low (300 F) oven ensured
that the inside cooked through before
the exterior became too brown. If
you’re using frozen cranberries,
there’s no need to thaw them first. The
ideal temperature for the eggs and but-
ter is 60 F. The test kitchen’s preferred
loaf pan measures 8 1/2-by-4 1/2-
inches; if you use a 9-by 5-inch loaf
pan, start checking for doneness 5
minutes early.

CREAM POUND CAKE
Servings: 8
Start to finish: 2 hours 30 minutes
5 large eggs, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups (8 3/4 ounces) all-pur-
pose flour
Salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons milk
14 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut
into 14 pieces and softened but still
cool
1 1/4 cups (8 3/4 ounces) granulated
sugar
4 ounces (1 cup) fresh or frozen
cranberries, chopped coarse
1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
Adjust oven rack to lower-middle
position and heat oven to 300 F.
Spray 8 1/2-by-4 1/2-inch loaf pan
with baking spray with flour.
Whisk eggs and vanilla together in
2-cup liquid measuring cup. Sift flour,
3/4 teaspoon salt, and baking powder
into bowl. Whisk sour cream and milk
together in second bowl.
Using stand mixer fitted with pad-
dle, beat butter on medium-high speed
until smooth and creamy, 2 to 3 min-
utes, scraping down bowl once.
Reduce speed to medium and gradually
add granulated sugar. Increase speed to

medium-high and beat until pale and
fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes, scraping down
bowl as needed. Reduce speed to medi-
um and gradually add egg mixture in
slow, steady stream. Scrape down
bowl and continue to mix on medium
speed until uniform, about 1 minute
(batter may look slightly curdled).
Reduce speed to low and add flour mix-
ture in 3 additions, alternating with
sour cream mixture in 2 additions,
scraping down bowl as needed. Give
batter final stir by hand. Toss cranber-
ries with confectioners’ sugar and 1/8
teaspoon salt in bowl until evenly
coated, then gently but thoroughly
fold into batter.
Transfer batter to prepared pan and
gently tap pan on counter to release
air bubbles. Bake until toothpick
inserted in center comes out clean, 1
3/4 hours to 1 hour 55 minutes, rotat-
ing pan halfway through baking. Let
cake cool in pan on wire rack for 15
minutes. Remove cake from pan and
let cool completely on rack, about 2

Victims’ relatives said prayers for their
country, pleaded for national unity and
pressed officials not to use the 2001 terror
attacks as a political tool in a polarized
nation.
Seventeen years after losing her husband,
Margie Miller came from her suburban home
to join thousands of relatives, survivors,
rescuers and others on a misty morning at
the memorial plaza where the World Trade
Center’s twin towers once stood.
“To me, he is here. This is my holy
place,” she said before the hourslong read-
ing of the names of her husband, Joel
Miller, and the nearly 3,000 others killed
when hijacked jets slammed into the towers,
the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville,
Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

the jetliners crashed after 40 passengers and
crew members realized what was happening

bers and civilians who repeatedly went back
into the Pentagon to rescue survivors.
The terrorists “hoped to break our spirit,
and they failed,” he said.

by U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Hours after the ceremony, two powerful
light beams soared soar into the night sky
from lower Manhattan in the annual
“Tribute in Light.”
The 9/11 commemorations are by now
familiar rituals, centered on reading the
names of the dead. But each year at ground
zero, victims’ relatives infuse the ceremony
with personal messages of remembrance,
inspiration and concern.
For Nicholas Haros Jr., that concern is
officials who make comparisons to 9/11 or
invoke it for political purposes.
“Stop. Stop,” implored Haros, who lost
his 76-year-old mother, Frances. “Please
stop using the bones and ashes of our loved
ones as props in your political theater.
Their lives, sacrifices and deaths are worth
so much more. Let’s not trivialize them.”
This year’s anniversary comes as a heated
midterm election cycle kicks into high
gear. But there have long been some efforts
to separate the solemn anniversary from
political campaigns. The group 9/11 Day,
which promotes volunteering on the
anniversary, asks candidates not to cam-
paign or run political ads for the day.
Rain or Shine
Organizers of the ground zero ceremony
allow politicians to attend, but they’ve
been barred since 2011 from reading names
or delivering remarks.
If not political speeches, there were polit-
ically tinged appeals from some victims’
relatives amid the reading.
“May we support our president to lead our
country,” said Joanne Barbara, who lost her
husband, Fire Department Assistant Chief
Gerard Barbara.
Another victim’s family sent a different
message.
“My hope is that discrimination, hatred
and bigotry will cease and that we all will
come together and love,” said Debra Epps, a
sister of victim Christopher Epps. Another
sister, Chaundera, had an answer for anyone
who wonders why families still come to
such ceremonies after 17 years.
“Because soldiers are still dying for our
freedom. First responders are still dying and
being ill,” Chaundera Epps said, adding,
“God bless America that’s never, ever,
stopped being great.”
Trump uses “Make America Great Again”
as a slogan.
Other relatives laid bare the toll their
losses had taken on their families. Thomas
Langer said his brother, Timmy, “drank
himself to death” after losing his wife,
Vanessa, and their unborn child on Sept. 11.
“I witnessed my brother endure the pain
that no one human being was ever meant to
bear,” Thomas Langer said.
Sept. 11 still shapes American policy,
politics and everyday experiences in places
from airports to office buildings, even if it’s
less of a constant presence in the public
consciousness after 17 years.
A stark reminder came not long after last
year’s anniversary: A truck mowed down
people, killing eight, on a bike path within

a few blocks of the World Trade Center on
Halloween.
In December, a would-be suicide bomber
set off a pipe bomb in a subway passageway
near Times Square, authorities said. They
said suspects in both attacks were inspired
by the Islamic State extremist group.
The recent attacks scare Ruben Perez, who
read names at the trade center Tuesday.
“I get very worried for the state of society.
... It’s part of what it means to be human in
the 21st century, a fear for public safety,”
said Perez, 23, who lost his uncle, Calixto
Anaya Jr.
Memorials to 9/11 continue to grow at
Shanksville, where a newly dedicated Tower
of Voices will eventually include a wind
chime for each of the 40 people killed there,
and ground zero, where work is to begin
soon on a pathway honoring rescue and
recovery workers.
It will serve as a way to recognize those
who became sick or died from exposure to
toxins released when the Trade Center’s
twin towers collapsed. Researchers have
documented elevated rates of respiratory ail-
ments, post-traumatic stress disorder and
other illnesses among people who spent
time in the rubble.
About 38,500 people have applied to a
compensation fund, and over $3.9 billion
in claims have been approved.
Meanwhile, a subway station destroyed
on 9/11 finally reopened Saturday. In June,
doors opened at the 80-story 3 World Trade
Center, one of several rebuilt office towers
that have been constructed or planned at the
site.
Victims’ families, too, have evolved and
grown.
“Even though I never met you,” Isabella
Del Corral said of her slain grandfather,
Joseph Piskadlo, “I’ll never forget you.”

“There are several ‘pipeline’ projects
that will become economically infea-
sible if subjected to a 10 percent low-
income requirement, especially given
the astronomical escalation of con-
struction costs the market has experi-

Greenwood said the proposal takes
advantage of Assembly Bill 1015,
passed last year by state lawmakers
under an effort to revitalize the inclu-
sionary housing mandate stripped by
the Palmer state Supreme Court rul-
ing.
Previously, city officials could only
require a portion of units in a for-sale
development to be reserved at an
affordable rate, but the new law
extends to rental properties.

The council approved the design for
the new Veterans Memorial Senior
Center and YMCA complex earlier this
year. The two buildings encompass
80,000 square feet and will be home to
two swimming pools — one indoor,
one out — open year-round, a 300-seat
theater, a cafe, gym and plenty of

center currently located at Red Morton

Trump-backed ex-cop gets GOP nod for House in N.H.

CONCORD, N. H. — A black former
police chief backed by the Trump adminis-
tration won the Republican nomination
Tuesday in New Hampshire’s toss-up con-
gressional district, while Democrats picked
experienced, establishment-backed nomi-
nees for both that seat and for governor.
Eddie Edwards, who was endorsed by
Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, defeated six
Republican opponents in the 1st
Congressional District, which covers the
eastern half of the state. A Navy veteran
who also served as enforcement chief for the
state liquor commission, Edwards is the sec-
ond African-American to be nominated to a
U.S. House seat in New Hampshire.
The district, which covers the eastern half
of the state, was once reliably Republican
but has flipped in each of the past four
cycles. In 2016, it returned Democrat Carol
Shea-Porter to Congress but backed
Eddie Edwards, who was endorsed by Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, defeated six Republican President Donald Trump.

other 10 candidates combined, but she faced
criticism for being both new to the state and
voting in general, having just moved to
New Hampshire last year and acknowledg-
ing she failed to vote in several recent elec-
tions.
Pappas is a former state lawmaker who is
serving his third term on the governor’s
Executive Council and runs a family restau-
rant in Manchester. He had the backing of
the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators,
and said he was proud that most of the
money he raised came from within the state.
Pappas told supporters Tuesday evening
his campaign will be about decency, unity
and progress.

Russia launches biggest war games in decades involving China

CHITA, Russia — Russia on Tuesday
launched its largest military exercise since
the Cold War, war games that will also
involve thousands of Chinese troops in a
show of burgeoning military ties between
Moscow and Beijing amid spiraling ten-
sions with the West.
Moscow said the Vostok (East) 2018
maneuvers will span vast expanses of
Siberia and the Far East and involve nearly
300,000 Russian troops, more than 1,000
aircraft, about 36,000 tanks and other mil-
itary vehicles and 80 warships.
China is sending about 3,200 troops,
900 combat vehicles and 30 aircraft to join
the drills at a Siberian firing range, a sig-
nificant deployment that reflects its shift
toward a full-fledged military alliance with
Russia. Mongolia also has sent a military
contingent.
As the maneuvers kicked off, Chinese
President Xi Jinping visited Russia Tuesday
to attend an economic forum in
Vladivostok. President Vladimir Putin
treated Xi to pancakes with caviar and shots
of vodka in a show of their warm personal
ties.
