FINDINGS:
We observed the following through the survey:
The children surveyed belonged to the age of group 17-19

1. WHETHER THE KIDS WERE


COMFORTABLE TALKING TO THEIR PARENTS ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS(%)

* 40% of the children felt that they were comfortable while talking to their parents
about their relationships whether romantic or casual.
* 32% of the respondents admitted that they were not comfortable talking to their
parents about their relationships. Maybe because of the society and the norms that
prevail.
* 28% of the respondents said that they were not sure if they would be comfortable
talking about their relationships around their parents.

2. DEGREE OF INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS IN THEIR RELATIONSHIPS (%)


* 8% of the respondents said that their parents approved of their relationships with
their respective partners.
* 10% of the respondents said that their parents would allow them of complete
freedom when it comes to holding a relationship with their partners.
* 65% of the respondents said that their parents will allow them , that is approve
them of their relationship but with certain restrictions and reservations.
* 17% of the respondents agreed with the point that their parents will totally
disapprove of their relationship.

3. SOCIETY’S INFLUENCE ON THE KIND OF


RELATIONSHIPS PARENTS APPROVE(%)
* 83% of the respondents that makes up the majority of the respondents, accepted
yes, the society does influence the kind of relationships their parents approve of.
Because the society has a major influential role in an individual’s life.
*1% of the respondents said that their parent’s opinion was independent of the
society we live in.
* 16% of the respondents said that they were not sure whether the society does
influence their parents opinion or not.

4. INFLUENCE OF PARENT’S OPINION ON


CHILDREN’S CHOICE(%)
*67% of the respondents believe that their parents’ opinion will influence the kind of
relationships they would involve in. Because the children respect and love their
parents their choice will be affected.
* 23% of the respondents said that to some extent their parents’ opinion might
matter or they were not sure if it would matter.
*10% of the children said that no, their choice is independent of their parents’
opinion. The children feel that it is their life and their choice of partner should be an
independent one.

5. CATEGORIES THAT INFLUENCE PARENTS’


CHOICE OF PARTNERS [ RELIGION, CASTE AND GOTRA, SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS,
AGE, OCCUPATION, PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS( HEIGHT, WEIGHT,
COMPLEXION,ETC.) GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS,CULTURE AND LANGUAGE,
ASTROLOGY AND HOROSCOPES, NONE OF THESE MATTER, ALL THOSE MATTER]
* 40% of the children accepted that for their parents all or almost all of the above
mentioned categories will affect the kind of partners they would approve of their
children.
*our society makes sure that such norms are adhered to so that the superiority of
the few sections can be upheld.
* 50% of the children responded that some of the categories will influence their
parents’ choice. Among these categories , like religion, occupation, caste ,culture,
and physical characterstics were common.
* even children believed that they wouldn’t want to have a partner from a different
religion because the society and their parents would disapprove of them.
* the remaining 10% said that none of the above mentioned categories mattered to
their parents and they had complete freedom while choosing their partners.
