Teacher: Stephanie M., Kimberly A., Maria H. Lesson Date: December 4, 2017
Subject: Action Verbs LDC/Unit Title: Verbs
Grade: 1st
Standards: Agenda:
L.1.1: Students will be able to • We will talk about action verbs
demonstrate a command of the • We will start the lesson on the
conventions of standards English grammar specific 5 action verbs we have
and usage when writing or speaking. selected. We will do this by:
1. Saying the action verb
2. Signing it
3. Acting out the action verb
4. Showing a picture of the
verb. (i.e. for the word
“hide” we will show a
picture of someone hiding)
Lesson Objective:
Students will gain an understanding of some action verbs (hide, eat, jump, run, sit).
They will do this by signing, acting out, and seeing the picture of the action verb. We
will assess their knowledge of the verbs at the end of the lesson. We will do this by
taking a quiz using kahoot.

Instructional Sequence
Get Started/ Drill/ Do (what meaningful activity will the students complete as soon as
they enter the classroom)

Engage/ Motivate (How will students interest be sparked? Is there prior knowledge that
should be tapped? Is there vocabulary that must be cleared? Is there brainstorming
that students need to complete before the lesson)

We can begin by talking about verbs. Which they will already have had a general
introduction to. Then, the teacher can list different kinds of verbs (action verbs and verbs of
being/non-action verbs).

Is, has been, will be vs. jump, run, hop

We will then ask the students what verbs have in common. Why are the verbs grouped the
way they are?

The first set show a state of existence while the second group shows an actual physical or
mental action

Whole Group Instruction:

We will say that not all verbs are the same. There are some verbs, action verbs that express a
physical or mental action. We will then talk about the five action verbs we will discuss (hde,
eat, jump, run, sit).
Then, using the PowerPoint, we will present the lesson. We will begin by showing the word
on the screen, then we will say it. Afterwards, we will sign and say the word. Then, we will
act it out , and, finally, we will show a picture of the word on the PowerPoint. We will follow
this procedure for all five of the words.

Group Practice:

As a whole group, we will attempt to correctly sign each action verb. We will all do this part
to try to avoid any negative feelings from the students. In other words, so that the deaf
students do not feel like they are being signaled out or that the hearing students feel like the
deaf student is slowing them down. Additionally, we feel it could be a fun, learning activity
for all of the students.

After signing the action verb, the teachers will ask the students to stand up. They will then
proceed to “acting out” each of the verbs.

Independent Practice:

The students will complete a worksheet that will assess their understanding of the meaning
of the presented action verbs.

Evaluate Understanding/ Assessment:

The students will individually complete a matching worksheet. The students will have to
match the action verb to the correct picture.

Closing Activity/Summary:

The students will individually complete a matching worksheet. The students will have to
match the action verb to the correct picture.
Accommodations/ Enrichment (how will my lesson satisfy the needs of all learners?)

There will be something for all kinds of learners. The visual learners will be able to
physically see the picture of the action verbs. The kinesthetic learners will be able to learn the
action verb by physically getting up and acting out the word. The deaf/ hard of hearing
students will benefit from the signing of the action word, the word being projected on the
screen, the acting out of the word, and the picture we will show. Also, we will try to make
sure that we are always standing in a position in which the deaf/hard of hearing student can
read or lips, and ensure that we do not talk too fast because that would make it difficult for
the deaf/hard of hearing student to read our lips.
