The mental health care of college students has been discussed in Brazil,
but not fully effected. This work aims to contribute in the planning of
psychosocial care offered to the graduate student at the Federal Univer-
sity of Santa Catarina (UFSC), under the optics of Social Health Deter-
mination, Health Promotion and Healthy Communities Strategy(WHO).
OBJECTIVE: Learn about the psychosocial care experience of under-
graduate students at UFSC, within the institution. Understanding how
the experience in UFSC is perceived by the student in relation to his
mental health; understand how the daily activities in UFSC can be per-
ceived or not as health promoters; studying the strategies used by stu-
dents in their experiences of vulnerability and protection in the context
of UFSC; and contribute to the improvement of health promotion ac-
tions for that public. METHODS: This qualitative and descriptive study
is a theoretical reflection, illustrated by semi-structured interviews with
undergraduate students at UFSC. Eight students were interviewed in the
first semester of 2015. Inclusion criteria were: students of the Federal
University of Santa Catarina, Campus Florianópolis, enrolled in under-
graduate courses, between the second and last semester of the course.
Exclusion criteria were: graduate students, with special license plates; in
the first semester of the course or within six months enrolled at UFSC ;
graduates; and students from other universities who have already studied
at UFSC in other periods. The interviews were audio-recorded and tran-
scribed. Data were analyzed from the hermeneutic dialectics perspec-
tive. RESULTS: the reality in UFSC is compatible with academic stud-
ies showing that the university experience is a generator of suffering for
part of the higher education students. However, in addition to individual
issues that may be involved in these processes, all the university context
is part of it. The arrival at the University and relations with the new
environment; relationships among students ; pedagogical relations be-
tween teachers and students; and access to student assistance, appear as
important social health determinants for graduate students at UFSC.
CONCLUSION: this study indicate important areas where health pro-
motion actions are needed at different levels of mediation and acting.
The focus of psychosocial care in assistance actions only, exclusively
for the student audience at the University, regardless of the role of the
Social Determinants of Health , and leaving behind background Health
Promotion actions and the transformation of the campus environment,
implies in looking incompletely to the reality and missing opportunities
to transform it in a lasting and profound way .
