Chief among these theorists, R.Wellek and A. Warren speak of genre as an institution,

rules and regulations in the main, but may opt to fight fr change in either a subtle or rad
ical manner. Moreover, an author may choose to play withthe usual elements of agente

The fluidity of genre designations can be demonstrated by considering Psalm 98, a
poem that may be classified in a variety of diferent genres, depending on the evel of

nay be classified narrowly in a genre with only Psalm 96. Psalm 96 i virwaly identical

Between these two extremes area varity of other potential classifications for Psalm 98. Mov-
ing frem broad to narrow, Psalm 98 may be treated asa poem, a cultic hyran, a hymn con-
cernirg God’ kingship, a divine-warrior victory psalm, and finally as most closely rel
fed to >salm 96. One of the benefits of such a fluid approach to gente is that it demands
that the exegete attend as closely tothe peculiarities ofthe texts as to its similarities.
How to Classify a Text

Part of the confusion surrounding the identification of texts that cohere intoa genre
originates in unclarity concerning the kind of similarities among texts that signal that
they belong to the same genre. Gunkel felt that a text could be generically classified
according to three criteria: the mood and thought(s) of the text, the linguistic forms
(grammar and vocabulary), and the social setting

Fluid Concept of Genre
In the nineteenth century, genre theorists believed that genres were rigid and pure,

text is not to deny that he was a historical king or that the events reported in the bx

the text portrays David and others. In other words, we must recognize that our accounts
are shaped—that i, we have in the Bible selective, emphasized, and interpreted accounts
of historical events

for his gospel: Jesus did many other things as wel. every one of them were written down,
