Dear Friend of MECA
A few months ago, MECA Associate Director Ziad Abbas and I
traveled to New Mexico to speak at two Maia Project fundrais-
ers. While we were there we were interviewed on a local radio
station about Palestine and prospects for peace.
I immediately responded by saying that things were really
changing here in the US. There is more activism and more
willingness to speak out than anytime since MECA began.
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)–-the Palestinian-led
international economic campaign to pressure Israel to com-
ply with international law and Universal Principles of Human
Rights–-is growing. Performers like Elvis Costello, Gil Scott Her-
on, Carlos Santana, the Pixies and others canceled concerts in
Israel in response to the Palestinian Call for a Cultural Boycott.
Student divestment campaigns were successful at Evergreen
College in Olympia, Washington and Hampshire College in
Massachusetts; at UC Berkeley thousands of people from the
community and around the world spoke at two all-night meet-
ings that, ultimately, ended in a veto override by one vote; and
campuses throughout the US and Canada have been building
campaigns that will keep growing.
I spoke about the labor and community picket at the port of
Oakland last June. Hundreds of people, with the support of
Longshore Workers Union Local 10 and the San Francisco and
Alameda County Labor Councils, stopped an Israeli cargo ship
from being unloaded for 24 hours. Finally, I said, many people
in the peace movement, who had for so long kept silent about
Palestine, began speaking out about Israel’s brutal aggression
and occupation. This became clear after the Israeli invasion of
Gaza a year and a half ago, which killed 1400 unarmed civil-
ians, including 400 children, and this year’s Israeli attack on the
Gaza Freedom Flotilla and murder of the nine Turkish peace
activists.
I stopped talking and it was Ziad’s turn to respond. He was
quiet for a moment. Then he began talking about how life for
the people in Palestine was getting worse every day. The on-
going construction of Israel’s Apartheid Wall in the West Bank
is seizing and dividing more and more Palestinian land, mak-
ing it impossible for farmers to get to their farms and tend to
their crops and animals. Ziad talked about how the Wall and
the hundreds of checkpoints separate families so that many

people, who live just a short drive away, have not seen their
mothers, fathers and children for months or years. Children
can’t get to their schools. Young men and women who are at-
tending university sometimes have to travel for hours. We hear
these stories directly from some of the 100 young people who
are receiving scholarships through MECA. Health care is often
delayed or denied. Since 2000, more than 69 women have giv-
en birth at checkpoints, often with tragic results.
Ziad went on to explain that unemployment is at an all time
high in the West Bank. In the Gaza Strip it is more than sev-
enty percent because of Israel’s blockade of goods, and pro-
hibitions on travel in and out of Gaza. He described the lack
of clean drinking water and the diseases that many children
have from contaminated water. He told our audience that we
should never forget that while we are discussing the situation
in Palestine, Israel is working around the clock, demolishing
homes and confiscating Palestinian land. They are terrorizing,
imprisoning, humiliating and killing Palestinian adults and
children. They are issuing orders and passing laws to make
daily life more and more unbearable.
Ziad, the radio interviewer, and I all realized that both of our
perspectives were accurate--one from the US activist and the
other from the Palestinian refugee. The political work of orga-
nizing, educating, and agitating is absolutely essential to end
the siege of Gaza and ultimately bring an end to the occupa-
tion, dispossession and brutality that Palestinians have lived
under for decades. But when Ziad spoke that day on the radio
about growing up in a refugee camp, what his life was like as
a child, and what life is like for the children living in refugee
camps today, I was reminded of why MECA does this work and
of how important it is to build playgrounds, send medical aid,
install drinking water units in schools, and provide scholar-
ships to university students. Political change will come but it
is MECA’s main responsibility to make daily life better and the
future more promising for the children who are growing up
right now.

In the last issue of the MECA Newsletter, Associate Director Ziad Ab-
bas wrote about the potential devastating impact of two new mili-
tary orders that had just gone into effect in April. Orders 1649 and
1650 make anyone residing in the West Bank without a special per-
mit vulnerable to expulsion, a $2,000 fine and imprisonment of up
to seven years, no matter how long they had lived in the West Bank
or how deep their ties there. Ziad wrote, “Gazans who moved to the
West Bank for work or to be with family will be impacted most by this
new order.” Sadly, that statement has already proved true, as this ar-
