About media140
media140 was founded in February 2009 by Andrew Gregson.
The first media140 was launched in London on 20 May 2009 with a conference entitled ‘The future
of real time news’, with over 270 attendees taking part in the first Twitter conference in the UK.
This was followed by a media140 London event on 26 October 2009, focusing on real-time social
media, brands and advertising held at RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) for over 250
delegates.
media140 Sydney was held on 5-6 November 2009 in conjunction with the ABC at Eugene
Goossens’ Hall, focusing on the ‘Future of Journalism in the Social Media Age.’ Over 45
speakers/presenters such as Malcolm Turnbull, Mark Scott (ABC), Jay Rosen (NYU), Annabel
Crabb, Mia Freedman, Riyaad Minty (Al Jazeera), Claire Wardle (BBC) and Leigh Sales (ABC)
engaged with a 300-strong audience in what was a seminal event looking at how real-time web is
changing the media and journalism industry.

Will social media only come into its own in government when budgets
run out?
Posted by Neerav Bhatt on Sep 23, 2010 in Political
Craig Thomler one of the media140 Canberra bloggers asks: will social media only come
into its own in government when budgets run out?
The US Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich spoke this morning at media140 #Ozpolitics on why President
Obama used social media in such an innovative way during his election campaign.
Bleich said that it wasn’t because President Obama particularly believed that social media was
taking over from traditional media and it wasn’t because his campaign team felt it would
differentiate them from other Democratic candidates.
It was because they didn’t have any choice.
Back in 2006 while Obama had enormous appeal as a Senator he didn’t have the basics to win an
election. No money, endorsements, name recognition or consultants.
He was running against Senator Hilary Clinton – who had been a household name for two
decades, had a good funding machine, had locked up most of the big endorsements and had good
consultants.

Grogs Gamut one of the media140 Canberra blogging team gives examples of the
mainstream media using twitter to generate stories and how this is not always in the
interest of good policy or the discussion of complex ideas.
At the media140 conference in Canberra today, Independent MP Rob Oakeshott talked of how
when he was delivering his 17 minutes speech explaining why he was going to support the ALP
the last thing on his mind was that the length of his speech would become the most important part.
While he delivered his announcement he said he was unaware that “twitter was killing him while
I was speaking”. He also noted that as a result of this, the contact of his speech was virtually
ignored.
His comments and those also by Senator Kate Lundy on the impact of her tweet during the ALP
leadership spill demonstrates that social media reaction can become the story, because the instant
feedback it provides.
