The Evolution of Lathe Machine

The first lathe machine that was developed was the two-person lathe machine which was designed by the Egyptians
in about 1300 BC. One person turned the woodwork piece using rope and the other person shaped the work piece
using a sharp tool. This design was improved by Ancient Romans who added a turning bow which eased the
woodwork. Later, a pedal (as in manual sewing machines) was used for rotating the work piece. This type of lathe
was called “spring pole” lathe which was used till the early decades of the 20th century. In 1772, a horse-powered
boring machine was installed which was used for making canons. During the Industrial revolution, steam engines and
water wheels were attached to the lathe to turn the work piece at higher speed, which made the work faster and
easier. After 1950, many new designs were made which improved the precision of work. With the years, Lathe
machines were classified depending upon their application and functionality.

Activity 1: writing activity

Rubric: Make the passive voice in simple past

 The ancient Chinese used rotary lathes to sharpen tools and weapons on an industrial scale.
 Jacques de Vaucanson built a lathe with sliding tool holder.
 The flexible pedal lathe represented a breakthrough in 1250.
 The oldest image of a lathe remained in the tomb of an Egyptian priest.
 Joseph Whitworth´s designs and realizations influenced fundamentally other manufacturers of the time.
 Joseph Whitworth patented a parallel lathe for turning and threading with a bench of flat guides and an
automatic transverse carriage.
 The innovation of the machine tool allowed interchangeable parts and mass production to become a part of
the reality of the 19th century.
 The steam engine changed the world of machine tools.
 As time progressed, machine tools became an important part of the world today.
 James Nasmyth invented the first shaper. He also invented the steam hammer. It allowed individuals to
forge heavier pieces.
 Many people used the lathe in medieval times for the machining of wood, metals, plastics and all kinds of
materials.
 Metalworking lathes evolved into heavier machines with thicker, more rigid parts. Between the late 19th
and mid-20th centuries, individual electric motors at each lathe replaced line shafting as the power source
 Henry Maudslay developed many improvements to the lathe from 1783 of this machine in the Verbruggen
workshop.
 The combination wrench spearheaded the hand tools production throughout the war.
 A long-handled bar or wrench gave considerable leverage in turning or holding the socket.
