The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
GODDESS SARASVATI REPLIES Lila awoke right back in her palace
O Lila hear me very attentively And summoned a meeting of the court
There are three types of space Finding the same ministers present there
Psychological space, physical space Whom she had seen in her husband's court
And infinite space of consciousness
The ministers cannot be in two places
To see your husband right here At the same time as just experienced
Meditate intensely on the infinite space Which is real and which is a reflection
When the finite mind travels between places As a mountain is reflected in a mirror
This is what exists in the middle unseen
She sought help from goddess Sarasvati
Give up all thoughts for this realm "This world exists within the undivided
Realize the universe's utter non-existence And outside here as solid matter too
As oneness with all must be realized Which is real and which a reflection?"
To experience the realm of infinity
Sarasvati asked a question in return
You will not be able to do so at present "What do you consider real and unreal?"
But you can enter this realm by my grace Lila replied, "You are here, this to me is real
Meditate O Lila with all of your being Where my husband is now seems unreal"
Enter the state free of all distractions
Sarasvati then said to Lila
LILA'S FIRST EXPERIENCE "How can the unreal be an effect of the real
The effect is the cause, there’s no difference
Lila meditated deeply with all of her heart
Just as a pot that holds water is clay only."
Only by the grace of goddess Sarasvati
Entered the infinite space of consciousness Material effects are by material causes
Where she beheld her husband once again Your husband's birth is without
An immediate material cause
She saw him seated on the throne as king
Besides the past which is memory
Surrounded by ministers and other kings
She was not seen but beheld all this Memory like space is but emptiness
Wondering as the king had passed away All creation is an effect of that too
2
The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
Your husband's birth is of memory That her husband's spirit would not leave the room
An illusion and effect of imagination A boon which I granted to her as well as to you
The story I am about to narrate The holy man had lived righteously
Illustrates creation’s dream-like nature His merits earned his wish to experience
Listen carefully with rapt attention A life as a mighty ruler and king
And see what the story points out to This same man is your husband and king

The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
One infinite consciousness alone is By relentless self-inquiry comes wisdom
'Tis all thought-forms or experiences This alone can dispel one's ignorance
No cause and effect relationship exist Ignorance in fact does not really exist
Infinite conscious is forever in itself Nor bondage or liberation—only consciousness
Lila thanked goddess Sarasvati Dream body appears real within a dream
For the enlightening words and instruction But vanishes completely upon awakening
Expressing a wish to see directly Even so will the hold of the physical body
The original house of the holy man Dissolve when one's tendencies cease to be

The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
The intellect must fill with beauty and bliss They could not hide their radiance
For broadest vision where all passions cease Which brightly illumined the room
The world’s non-existence is then realized Lila asked the eldest son the cause
The wise call this dedicated practice or abhyasa Of sorrow that seemed to afflict all there
‘This is world’, ‘This I am’, and such The son replied "'twas was parents’ death
These thoughts don’t arise in the mind Both lived exemplary righteous lives
Thus do attraction and repulsion cease Both died and departed at the same time"
Not by force but by wisdom's dawning" Lila relieved his sorrow by her blessing

The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
But in the physical plane it is not so LILA'S OBSERVATIONS
Millions of miles separate the planes Here, in the space the size of a thumb
We imagined my husband's kingdom afar
In the majestic infinite consciousness
Though we are both pure consciousness
Universes come and go in each atom
My husband and kingdom seem distant
Like specks of dust in beams of light
Shining through a hole in the roof" Truly marvelous this mysterious power
Maya, a force that deludes the wise too
LILA RECOLLECTS I would like to enter the capital
O Divinity! All glory be to thee Where my husband now does rule
I remember now all 800 births
As insects, animals, male and female INNER JOURNEY 2
Some rich, poor, evil and others good Both rose into space, seeing all creation
Beyond which was pure consciousness
VASISTHA'S COMMENTS Essential nature of being consciousness
Infinite consciousness has no barriers Thus all forms arise and return in it
No universe exists nor any galaxies
Sarasvati and Lila remained within Countless universes exist in creation
The space in Lila's inner apartment Very different they are in every way
Different divinities preside over them
It was there that the holy man Different too are their inhabitants
Became king and ruled his realm
All happened in pure space itself Since consciousness exists everywhere
No universe, no distance and no barriers Creation and dissolution are perpetual
All held together by a mysterious power
On account of intense yogic practice One consciousness alone exists, in it all is
Lila acquired knowledge of threefold time
She expressed her recollection to Sarasvati Lila then saw her palace's inner apartment
In the same space of her inner apartment Where the dead king lay buried under flowers
Intensely wishing to see him once again
She soared through this realm to where he was

A mighty king from a nearby kingdom INNER JOURNEY 2 (CONTINUES)
Was laying siege to her husband's realm Both entered the king’s apartment
A fierce battle ensued as they approached Goddess Sarasvati blessed the king
And beheld her husband with his war council Inspired he recollected previous lives
And asked Sarasvati about the mystery
VASISTHA'S COMMENTS
It is impossible for one rooted in the idea "It has been one day since I last died
'I am the body' to pass into subtlety How come I've lived in this new body
This innermost conviction is the obstruction A very full life for seventy years
When this is absent, all limitations are too Pray goddess, kindly enlighten me"
As water remains water and flows down Sarasvati smiled and replied to the king
Fire remains fire and always rises up "All that you are seeing right here
So also consciousness always remains Manifested where you last did die
Pure consciousness always unchanged In the hut of the holy man on the hill
As is the understanding so is the mind That is his world and in that world
Understanding is what is called mind Is the world of king Padma too
However its direction can be changed Where you find yourself living in
With great and unrelenting effort Thinking and relating in one way

The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
The wise see only pure consciousness Is what is immediately experienced
The ignorant see and experience differences Both vision and experience are consciousness
A long dream is this entire universe
'Tis the ego that fancies dream as real 'Tis because of all being consciousness
Everything takes place so instantly
O king you shall die in this war A mere thought causes worlds to arise
Then regain your previous kingdom Time, space and objectivity do not hinder
Returning to your previous status
Family, ministers and surroundings What is reflected in one's consciousness
Is what is seen outside as well
We shall go now as we came This objective world being experienced
All must follow their own course Is really no more than that in a dream
For the nature of motion does differ
In a horse, an elephant and a camel In both states of waking and dream
There is no reality to the experienced
A courtier appeared at that very time Both are reflections within oneself
Bringing the news of impending destruction Both worlds exist in oneself too
The king bowed and excused himself
Leaving his wife to attend to both In life, death does not exist
In death, life does not exist either
The king's wife looked exactly like Lila That which holds together either experience
Younger as she looked in her youth Is absent in the other, making it thus
The ministers in the court right there
Were exactly the same as in her realm Whether ether is real or not real
One cannot say with surety
"What is the secret of all of this The substratum from which all emerge
How come they are in both places Is the only sure eternal reality
If they be reflections of our fancy
Are they sentient or conscious beings?" In Brahman does the universe exist
As an idea, just as a snake in a rope
Sarasvati replied to dispel Lila's doubts Neither real nor unreal is it
"The vision arising within oneself Just as the individual's existence

The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
Each experience their own desires Each earn their state by their deeds
Some old and some new wishes too I preside over the intelligence of all beings
Experiences are sometimes similar
But sometimes they are dissimilar too I am the power in consciousness
Its life-force too I am as well
All experiences appear to be real Forms taken by each one's energy
As these ministers and the queen Does fructify in due course of time
All exist as reflections in consciousness
You, me and others—know and rest in peace You longed for liberation—attained it
You may consider this as either
The queen's wife too was named Lila Fruit of austerity or your worship
Let's call her the second Lila here Bestowed by Pure Consciousness
She expressed her doubts to Sarasvati
Hoping for clarification to the mystery All bestowal is by consciousness
Just as fruit that falls from above
"O divinity, I used to worship Sarasvati It only seems to fall from the sky
You look like her, I presume you are her It is the tree that really bestows it"
Please grant that when my husband dies
I may accompany him wherever he goes" The battle grew fierce as they talked
Watching the war from the palace
Sarasvati then spoke to the second Lila The king joined the ranks and the fight
"You have indeed worshiped me devoutly Missiles and weapons clouded the air
Therefore I grant this boon you seek
To accompany your husband after his death" The second Lila then asked Sarasvati
"How is it that though blessed by you
The first Lila asked goddess Sarasvati The king is unable to win this war
"Your words always do come true And death is his fate certainly?”
Why did you not allow me to travel
Between planes with the same body?" Sarasvati replied to the second Lila
"The king was indeed blessed by me
Sarasvati replied to the first Lila His prayer was not for victory in battle
"I do not really do anything at all I grant the deepest prayers of all
9
The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
I am the indwelling consciousness There are atoms in these worlds
Whatever a person asks of me These atoms have worlds in them too
That fruit I do bestow on him
Just as fire gives heat quite naturally The second Lila who fell unconscious
Has already reached king Padma's body
The attacking king prayed for victory Which lies covered in flowers, as you left him
Victory he will attain in this battle You are both dream-objects of the king
Your husband will be slain in this war
Rejoin you and soon attain liberation" We have created each other in our fancy
All in the undivided pure consciousness
Just then the king was slain in battle One who knows this does renounce
The second Lila fell unconscious at this Objects of perception very naturally
The first Lila said to goddess Sarasvati
"My husband is about to give up the ghost" The youthful Lila was indeed yourself
To be with the king was her prayer
Sarasvati replied to the first Lila Hence she left before the king did die
"There's neither a kingdom nor the earth And is with him again as was her prayer
The terrible war is as real as a dream
All this is only in your own palace You are individualized consciousness
Cosmic consciousness am I my dear
There is the world of king Padma I make all these things happen
There is all of your own world too All in undivided pure consciousness"
The entire universe is there as well
In the house of the holy man on the hill VASISTHA'S COMMENTS
The second Lila rose into the sky
Uncreated, indestructible is Reality Met her daughter and proceeded
That is the only Reality there is Across the oceans into consciousness
That infinite consciousness is perceived To where her husband the king was
As the universe by the ignorant
Countless universes in consciousness
As a city exists within the dreamer Unknowing of each other's existence
Worlds exists in a small atom
10
The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
The second Lila felt most fortunate Along with all their characteristics
Blessed to reunite with her husband Into what else could they dissolve?
11
The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
When there is cessation of life-breath This cycle ends when the jiva
One ceases to live, death comes to him Is enlightened by self-knowledge
But all this is however imaginary
Infinite consciousness can never cease to be Consciousness masquerades as all
Sentient and seemingly insentient
Eternal and infinite is pure consciousness There is no distinction between the two
Never rising, it can never cease to be Due to the substratum of consciousness
In it does all life appears to rise and to fall
Consciousness remains pure and unchanged 'Tis the same infinite consciousness
Known by all these different names
What is called jiva or the individual Appearing in all these different forms
Is the atomic particle that’s stored Appearing individual and independent
With memories and latent tendencies
It stays in the space of the dead on death The king who died here now wishes
To enter the body of king Padma
This they call the departed soul Fancying entry into another world
This jiva abandons the earlier seen Let us proceed there on our own paths"
And perceives other things once again
Just as in dreaming or day-dreaming VASISTHA COMMENTED
When the first Lila became enlightened
After a lapse of consciousness She abandoned the link with the physical form
This jiva begins to fancy another body As it was ignorance making it appear
Another world and life-span too As if she was that physical body
What the jiva sees, it experiences
The unreal manifests in the deluded mind
In the infinite space of consciousness Creating havoc till it is dispelled
Time and action do not exist at all All nothing but fanciful conviction
The jiva fancies death, heaven and hell Of the unreal rooted by repetition
And experiences whatever it fancies
One can move to other ethereal bodies
This cycle of experience does repeat Just as from one dream to another
The jiva decides and thus experiences
12
The Story of Lila from the Yoga Vasistha (In Poem)
Without abandoning or destroying Sarasvati asked her how exactly
The previous one that was inhabited She recollected having gotten there
Though the yogi's body appears to be The second Lila replied to Sarasvati
It is really invisible being pure light "I fainted seeing the fierce battle
He appears to live and to die My subtle body rose into the sky
Non-different from pure consciousness And was brought here by the king
The ethereal body is the only body Seeing that he was quite fatigued
Appearing linked to the physical From the battle, I fanned him
The yogi attains this while living Not wishing to disturb his rest
Due to his inner enlightenment You appeared at this very moment"
