English File Elementary consists in a student’s book, a workbook, a teacher’s book, a class video and class
audio CDs

STUDENT’S BOOK: It’s divided into 12 units, each of which contains 3 sections (see notes above with
details of what is included and omitted in the 2018 syllabus). At the back of the book you will find very
useful sections that you should definitely deal with: Writing Bank, Grammar Bank and Vocabulary Bank.
There is also a Sound Bank in case you need to further practice sounds.
After every odd-numbered unit there is a video section called Practical English. You find the video in the
Class Video DVD. Do not leave out this section as it tells an amusing story in which useful social English
and functions appear.
After every even-numbered unit there is a Revise and Check section. We strongly suggest that you do the
Can you understand these people? section: it is the In the street videos which you can watch (you find them
in the Class Video DVD) or just listen to the dialogues from the class audio CD. We recommend you work
with the videos.

WORKBOOK: It includes a CD-ROM with the workbook audio and extra practice. Encourage your
students to use it. All the workbook copies available are without key. You can find the key at
www.oup.com/elt/teacher/englishfile.

NOTE: Teachers are free to choose the exercises from the review pages, tests and workbook which they
consider more relevant or useful according to each group. Take into account the sections omitted when
selecting the exercises.

TEACHER’S BOOK: We recommend the use of the Teacher's book, which will guide you throughout the
course. It comes with Test and Assessment CD-ROM and Photocopiable Materials.
+ The Photocopiable Material at the end of the Teacher’s Guide (p.158) includes Grammar, Communicative,
Vocabulary and Song Activities that you may select to use with your group according to their needs/skills
and the TIME you have.

WRITING: Consult the Writing Section in the Student's Book

Types of writing: see 2018 Types of writing for Teens and Adults on our web site.
For further practice you may consult ‘Reading & Writing Targets 1& 2’,by V. Evans

EXTENSIVE READING: Start with "The Earthquake" in July, as students will have acquired more
knowledge of the language to deal with the story by that time. We advise you to carry out the activities
throughout the book. Apart from this, you will find the worksheet for The Earthquake at:
www.ucl.dk/media(3248,1030)/Factsheets_for_The_Earthquake.pdf
We suggest you use the audio CD to help students to further develop their listening skills.

Please help your students develop their reading skills by encouraging them to read the story and exploit
it through different activities. By no means should you give them just a summary to study by heart.

For further grammar practice you may consult ´Grammar Spectrum 1’ (Elementary) by K. Paterson and M.
Harrison, ‘Grammar Spectrum 2’ (Pre –intermediate) by M . Harrison ‘Oxford Practice Grammar’ (Basic) by
Coe, Harrison and Paterson, ‘Macmillan English Grammar in Context’ ( Essential) by S. Clarke and ´Essential
Grammar in Use’ (Elementary) by R. Murphy.

FINAL TEST: Present Perfect will be tested in ‘Circle’ and ‘Match’. It will not be included in ‘Tenses’ or
‘Questions’.
