Air Breaker Inspection & Testing
INSPECTION & TEST PROCEDURES
1. Visual and Mechanical Inspection
– Inspect physical and mechanical
condition.
– Inspect anchorage, alignment and
grounding.
– Prior to cleaning, perform as-found tests.
– Clean unit.
– Verify correct blade/contact alignment &
penetration, travel stop and mechanical
operation.
– Verity fuses are support properly, clean
contact surfaces and fuse clip tension.
INSPECTION & TEST PROCEDURES
cont’d
– Inspect bolted electrical connections for
high resistance by: use of a DLRO meter
and by checking torque with a calibrate
torque wrench.
– Verify phase-barrier mounting is intact.
– Verify correct operation of control
devices & interlocks.
– Use appropriate lubrication on moving
current-carrying parts and on moving or
sliding surfaces.
– Perform as-left tests.
INSPECTION & TEST PROCEDURES
cont’d
1. Electrical tests.
– Measure contact resistance across the
contacts and fuse holders.
– Perform insulation-resistance tests:
• Phase to Phase
• Phase to Ground
With the contacts closed & open.
– Perform primary or secondary injection
testing.
Vacuum Breaker Inspection Testing

The same procedures

as above with the
addition of the
following:

• Perform a Hi-Pot test

or a vacuum bottle
integrity test across
each vacuum bottle,
with the contact in the
open position.
VACUUM BOTTLE
Rebuild Medium Voltage breaker
FS6-Gas Breaker
Inspection and Testing Procedures
Perform the same test as performed on the air and
vacuum breakers with the exception of:

1. Visual and Mechanical Inspection

• Inspect and service the operating mechanism.

• Take a sample for gas analysis
• Leak detection
• Test the alarms, pressure & limit switches, gas
charge if necessary.
• Slow close & open the breaker to allow for
inspection of the contact alignment, binding or other
operations.
Inspection and Testing Procedures

1. Electrical testing.
– DLRO (contact resistance)
– Insulation testing (Megger test)
– Perform a contact/pole resistance test.
– Perform a trip and close test with the
control and a trip test with the relays.
– Perform a power factor test on each pole
(open and closed) and each bushing.
