Most discussions about motivating techniques are based on the idealistic belief that “all students
are motivated to learn under the right conditions, and that you can provide these conditions in
your classroom.” (Mc Combs and Pope 1994:vii).
Motivational Influence
What does motivating someone involves?
What is motivating teaching?
Whose responsibility is it to motivate learners?
Motivational Strategies
Motivational strategies are techniques that promote the individual’s goal-related behaviour.
They refer to motivational influences that are consciously exerted to achieve some systematic
and enduring positive effect.
Creating the basic for motivational conditions
• Enthusiasm;
The enthusiasm for your specialization area and the ability to make this enthusiasm
public is one of the most important ingredients of motivationally successful
teaching.
Projecting enthusiasm is related to the more general process of modeling.
Commitment
• Show commitment towards the sts’ learning and progress – they ‘ll do the same;
• They should be aware that you care, that you are not there just for the salary;
• Show that it is important to you that your sts succeed; that you are ready to work
as hard as them towards this success;
Relationship with students
Teachers who share warm, personal interactions with their students, who respond to
their concerns in an empathic manner and who succeed in establishing relationships
of mutual trust and respect with the learners, are more likely to inspire them in
academic matters.
Relationship with parents
A good relationship with students also depends on our good reationship with their
parents.
One of the most distinctive features of teachers who have been successful with
hard-to-reach, at-risk students is that they reach out to these students’ families,
get to know them, keep them informed of what is going on at school, and involve
them in decision-making.
