How Can I Know If I Have Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD). The possible effects of Chlamydia include
pelvic inflammatory disease and a variant of atypical pneumonia.

Causes and Complications of Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common venereal disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The disease is
transmitted through unprotected (vaginal or anal) intercourse with an infected partner. A mother can
also pass the disease to her baby during childbirth.

A latent infection of the cervix focuses little damage, but the infection can spread to the uterus, the
endometrium where they infected. From there it can also affect the ovaries and fallopian tubes and
cause pelvic inflammatory disease. A pelvic infection is a major cause of infertility and ectopic
pregnancies in women of childbearing age.

Pelvic Inflammation also occurs frequently in gonorrhea, and that is the reason why chlamydia is often
confused with this disease. The symptoms of both diseases are showing great similarities and often
coexist.

Chlamydia cans also prostates (inflammation of the rectum) and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the
conjunctiva on the inside of the eyelids and the outside of the eyeballs) cause.

Symptoms

The first symptoms of Chlamydia are usually mild and diving only 1 to 3 weeks after infection.. Often the
disease is only recognized if there are complications. The symptoms of Chlamydia infection in the cervix,
the urethra or anus are intermittent vaginal bleeding or discharge, painful urination or pain in the
abdomen.

In men, Chlamydia often causes inflammation of the urethra; the penis secretes mucus or pus. Some
men also experience painful urination. Pain or swelling in the scrotal area may be signs of epididymitis,
inflammation of the epididymides. About half of the men show no symptoms.

Diagnose Diagnosis

Finding the right diagnosis, doctors should examine the pelvis in women and swabs for chlamydia and
gonorrhea of the cervix and the urethra. In men, the doctor makes a smear of the urethra. A negative
result does not give full guarantee.

People who have had unprotected intercourse with an infected partner should seek treatment
immediately, even before the results of the checks zijn. Tegenwoordig there are also very accurate urine
tests to make smears unnecessary.

Treatment

There are several effective, safe and not too expensive antibiotic treatments for chlamydia. Because
Chlamydia and gonorrhea often occur together, many patients receive antibiotics to combat these
diseases.

If patients do not (in time) for treatment, can cause serious complications. Women are at risk of a pelvic
inflammatory disease to run, which can ultimately lead to liver disease, chronic pelvic pain or infertility.
Men can get painful swollen testicles, sexually transmitted reactive arthritis or Reiter's syndrome.
