Journal title : Prevalence and Associated Factors for Pterygium in Rural

Agrarian Central India. The Central India Eye and Medical Study

Journal type :Scientific Report

P (POPULATION or PATIENT or PROBLEM)

The study comprised 4711 subjects (aged 30+ years). A detailed ophthalmic and
medical examination was performed. A pterygium was diagnosed during the slit lamp
examination and confirmed on corneal photographs.

I (INTERVENTION or INDICATOR or INDEX TEST or exposure of INTERST)

The examinations were carried out in the hospital. Trained social workers filled out a
questionnaire with 200 items on the socioeconomic background, living conditions,
daily food, smoking or other types of tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption,
daily physical activity, known diagnosis of major systemic diseases, intake of
medication, psychiatric status (questions on psychiatric depression including
thoughts of suicide), family history of eye diseases, and wearing and availability
of glasses.

C (COMPARISON)
There is no comparison in this study.

O (OUTCOME of interest)

Pterygium prevalence in rural Central India is about 13% among adult Indians aged
30+ years. Older age, male gender, lower educational level, lower body height and
more time spent outdoors with vigorous work were associated factors. Since the living
conditions in the study location were mostly untouched by modern developments, the
results may show the prevalence and associations of pterygia without major medical
or technologic influences.

Is the results of research VALID ?

The result of this study cannot be said as valid, because there is no randomization in
sampling so it can not be representative of the intended research population. The
inclusion criteria for being a research sample are also not clearly stated. The design in
this study is appropriate, which using cross sectional method that is able to examine
many variables at once, and calculating the prevalence number which is the number
that describe number of cases in a certain period.
Is the results of research IMPORTANT ?

This study provide information that the high awareness of contraception and the level
of education doesn’t reflect the level of contraceptive use. The study also shows that
the antepartum period is the most effective period in which women will be more
perceptive to contraception advice.
Statistical analysis of this study didn’t correlating between the variables so that, only
the percentage of each variable and no p-value was obtained. And also, there is no
confidence interval value. Because of that, it can’t be determined whether the research
results are meaningful or not.

Is the results of research APPLICABLE ?

This study can’t be applied to the population because it can not determined whether
the research is meaningful or not. But, the result of this study can be used as a source
of information for further research.

Critical appraisal conclusion

- Level of evidence : IV
- Recommendation :
 Randomization should be done at the sampling in order to represent the
desired target population.
 We recommend to test the correlation between variables using
statistical applications to determine the value of p-value so it can be
known that the result of study is meaningful or not.
 Inclusion criteria should be included.
