Introduction

Underachievement in Mathematics is an ongoing issue across the nation. Many

learners, beginning at the Elementary level, are not motivated and perform poorly. To
stay aligned with the educational standards, our teachers must be able to teach
mathematics using various techniques and alternative strategies to reach our learners.
This differs from the predominant traditional method of teaching mathematics which
usually consists of memorization, practical use of numbers and equations (lack of
manipulation), work sheets, drill-and-kill methods (repetition of similar problems), and
is usually teacher centered (direct instruction). In a 21st century classroom, a
mathematics teacher must integrate technology and non-traditional strategies when
teaching math to meet the requirements of our educational standards.
Mathematics is typically not the most preferred subject among learners may it
be primary, secondary or college level. Math, a subject involving numbers and
calculations, is typically low on the list of interesting and exciting subjects for learners.
This dislike of mathematics is a widespread problem that may be causing our students
to be outperformed by their counterparts from different schools. This is typically
influenced by the process of change in our world today.
Most failure in Mathematics is due to the sole memorization with poor
understanding. Learners lack application of skills and techniques in solving
mathematical problems which help develop their skills in critical thinking, reasoning
and creativity in order for them to work independently.
In Balete Integrated School, Mathematics has been noted as one of the most
difficult subjects since it consists of a collection of facts and skills to be memorized or
mastered by a relatively heterogeneous group of learners.
The result of the Numeracy Test in Mathematics in year 2018 in different levels
were as follows: G7- 112 learners; G8-153 learners; G9- 183 learners and G10-102
learners. This resulted that 59% of the total population of the Junior High School. It is
clearly visible that Mathematics need immediate attention.
The researchers concerned themselves as a Mathematics teacher on how they
are going to help their learners perform better in Mathematics. This concern made the
researchers plan to find the possible solution to assist the Junior High School Non-
numerates in enhancing their skills in Mathematics.
