TASK 3: MICROTEACHING REPORT WRITING

Based on microteaching conducted by Wan Nurfatin Syafiqah, there are a few things has
been observed throughout the process. In this report, I will be focusing on the strengths,
weaknesses and improvements that can be made. As for Fatin, she chose to conduct set induction
as her microteaching simulation. Although, it only took about 5 minutes, this phase is essential in
teaching and learning process. Vighnarajah (2012) stated that set induction is the preliminary part
of a lesson where the teacher introduces the introduction of the topic to capture pupils’ attention.

First and foremost, the strength of her microteaching is the incorporation of songs. As
everyone knows, children love songs. Singing and music are classified as the most enjoyable
learning activities for children because they consist both elements of enjoyment and learning.
According to Barker, J. (1999), songs provide good language models which are easy to follow as
the flow of the words is usually enhanced by the flow of the music. In addition, children can learn
a lot of new words through songs. The repetition of words can help children to acquire new
vocabulary and new concepts (Speechies, 2014). However, the weakness that can be seen is the
song chosen is quite fast if the targeted pupils are average and low level as they are not familiar
with the words. Therefore, one way to overcome the problem is by showing the song’s lyrics to
the pupils first without asking them to sing along. Next, pupils are required to sing along during
the second round as they are already familiar with the words.

Furthermore, the appropriateness of the teaching and learning materials. Deepty Gupta
(2014) defined teaching aid as a tool used by teachers to help learners improve their learning
skills as well as to reduce boredom in learning. Mehmet Ali and Ali Osman (2013) also
emphasized that appropriate resources can be able to increase pupils’ motivation and create the
desire of learning. The teaching and learning aid selected is appropriate to the pupils’ age. She
adapted a song video to arouse pupils’ interest in learning. The language used in the song video
also simple and brief. Language must be kept as simple as possible and they must be logical so
pupils will easily understand them (Mohammed Rhalmi, 2010). Morever, the selection of the
material also appropriate with the content and learning standard. She wanted to teach about
animals, thus she chose a song video related to the topic. In brief, the selection and adaption of
the materials should correspond to the level of the targeted pupils.

Lastly, the strength of this microteaching is Fatin encourages pupils’ active engagement.
She played the song video and asked the pupils to sing along. It will help them to familiarize
themselves with unusual words as well as to pronounce those words correctly. They can also be
able to understand those words by looking at the video. It is advisable to have an active
participation from the pupils as it will help pupils in their cognitive development (Zhan, 2008). This
will also help to enhance their memory if they are actively involved in the learning process. Ismail
Zain (2002) said that people are 90% remember of what they say and do. Therefore, when the
pupils do, they will definitely understand. On the other hand, some of the pupils may excuse
themselves from singing along. In order to overcome the problem, teacher can ask the pupils to
stand up and make actions while singing. Hence, teacher can ensure that everyone is taking parts
when they stand.

In conclusion, the strengths can be used continuously while the weaknesses can be
improved from time to time.
