Newsletter of Archer United Methodist Church September 2018- Volume 9

By God’s grace the OKINE family made up of Pastor Derrick, Theodora, Derrick (Jr) and Albert departed from Omaha
on 26th July 2018 at 7pm., arriving in Accra, Ghana on Friday 27th July at 713pm, via Minneapolis and Amsterdam. In
Accra we resided at the Nungua West Methodist Church (NWMC).
On Saturday, the 28th July we visited the Shiabu Methodist preaching post (SMPP)at Dansoman, where my parents
live.

On Tuesday the thirty-first July, I met with the Very Rev. Samuel Osabutey, Methodist Bishop of Accra District at the
bishop’s court in Wesley Grammar school in Dansoman. In attendance at the meeting was Rev. Abedu-Quarshie the
director of ministries in the Accra District. At 2pm, I visited the Very Rev. Isaac Akushie, superintendent minister of
the Nazareth Methodist Church (NMC, my home circuit) in Mamprobi.

On Wednesday, the first of August, we conducted an evening prayer meeting at the Shiabu Methodist preaching
post. On Thursday, the second of August, I attended the Thursday morning prayer service with my marriage counse-
lor at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. On Friday, the third of August, we realized that there was a big need
for school kids in all these five churches, namely: the Shiabu Methodist preaching post (SMPP- 40 kids), the True vine
Methodist Church (TVMC- 120 kids), Nungua west Methodist (NWMC- 120 kids), Nungua Ebenezer Methodist (NEM)
(20 kids) and Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (OEPC- 100 kids). We decided to buy some 24 dozen more bags in
addition to the eighty- five bags given by the United Church women and twenty-two bags donated by the Sioux City
Ford Company, and eighty- five dollars worth of school supplies bought from Walmart in Spencer, IA. We also
bought 10 boxes of exercise books (200 dozen exercise books), 32 dozen rulers, 360 boxes of crayons, 200 dozen
pencils, 32 dozen sharpeners and 32 dozen erasers On Saturday the fourth of August, we conducted a leadership
workshop from 8:30am to 1:30pm. We talked about leadership in the kingdom of God, its eight perspectives, princi-
ples of Jesus-type of leadership and five sectors of stewardship. The participants were refreshed with soft drinks and
biscuits.

On Sunday, the fifth August, we presented the back to school kits and I preached at the SMPP on the theme,
“Entrance into the Kingdom of God.”

On Monday and Tuesday, the sixth and seventh of August, we organized a two-day Vacation Bible School day camp
for the children service at the TVMC. The children were presented with candies.

On Thursday, the ninth August, we went to Cape Coast Castle to visit the slave dungeons and forts used during the
infamous slave trade from Ghana to the developed world.

On Saturday, the eleventh of August, we had a leadership conference on ethics and boundary training for pastors,
leaders and church workers. The participants were refreshed with soft drinks and meat-pie.

On Sunday the twelfth of August, I presented the 100 back-to-school kits to the OEPC at their first service from 7am-
9am. I then left for SMPP where I preached from first Kings chapter 19-on the theme “depression and our resources
in God.” Theodora and the kids did the presentation of back-to-school kits at the NWMC. On Sunday, the nineteenth
of August we worshipped at our home church of TVMC from 9am to 1pm.

If you are aware of someone in need of a pastoral call, please inform Pastor Derrick on his cell 605-
691-6020. He would rather hear from multiple sources than from no one at all. In these times of pri-
vacy rights, hospitals and nursing homes may not divulge information relating to a resident or patient,
so it is very important that members and/or their families let the Pastor know of all needs for pastoral
care.
